Li Dongyuan stated: Women who have undergone delivery or spontaneous abortion with prolonged bleeding may experience fainting, loss of consciousness, closing their eyes, and lack of perception. This is because blood has been suddenly lost; when有形 (substantial) blood departs, the Heart Spirit loses its nourishment. The Heart and Pericardium belong to Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire; they are calm when nourished by blood and endangered when blood is lost. Excessive fire causes fainting; fire overcoming Lung Metal leads to closed eyes and unconsciousness, indicating that Yin blood has been suddenly depleted and cannot anchor Yang. When blood is deficient, practitioners often use Shihi (Talcum), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), which are pungent, sweet, and greatly cold medicines. These drain heat from Qi, meaning draining Qi while Blood is deficient, and draining Yang while Yin is deficient, injuring both and worsening insufficiency. In consumptive diseases with coma and unconsciousness, the heat is in the Upper Jiao (Heart and Lungs). This is formless heat; using cold medicines to drive it downward ignores that Upper Jiao diseases all belong to the Exterior and are Yin syndromes, which should be cured by sweating. Now, using purgatives instead, although survival is fortunate, the violent depletion of Qi and Blood will surely shorten life. Furthermore, one must not ignore the *Neijing* saying that when disease Qi is insufficient, tonification is preferred over purgation. All cases of closed eyes belong to Yin and should be treated with sweating, not purging. One must also not forget that in Taiyang syndrome with depression and dizziness, sweating cures it; thus, cold medicines are contraindicated. Delivery or abortion does not inherently damage the Original Qi; it is merely a sudden loss of blood. To lose blood is to tonify blood; what doubt remains? Tonifying blood clarifies the Spirit. Normally, blood descends and is lost; now it should be tonified and lifted. The Heart receives blood nourishment, and the Spirit will not be confused. If blood flows down violently, it is like the excessive dominance of Autumn/Winter energies; now lift and raise it, assisting Yang so the eyes open and the Spirit remains clear. I hereby establish a prescription to tonify, nourish, generate blood, and benefit Yang, to supplement the insufficiency of the Hand and Foot Jueyin meridians.

Because blood has escaped downwards], Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [roasted], Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) [remove seedlings], Dangguishen (Body of Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [wash with wine], Gegen (Radix Puerariae) [each two qian], Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) [each three qian].
