Mr. Mao stated: If a newborn infant suffers from "Ke Wu" (Guest Invasion) syndrome, the manifestations include a cyanotic and dark complexion, closed eyes, vomiting with an inability to suckle milk. This condition arises because after birth, infants inevitably undergo visits and inquiries from outsiders; there may be individuals with axillary odor, or those affected by unclean menstrual blood, or outsiders carrying evil spirits who touch the infant. Consequently, when breastfeeding, the infant is exposed to objects with異气 (abnormal qi). Since the infant's qi and blood are not yet established, they are further struck by wind-pathogens, leading to this condition. For treatment, first apply Zhusha Gao (Cinnabar Paste; see the section on Fright and Accumulation for the formula) to the nipple for the infant to suckle. Subsequently, administer Zhenxin Wan (Heart-Calming Pill; for fright) and Jiaxing Pi San (Clam and Spleen Powder; for anorexia) until recovery. If the infant refuses milk, stares fixedly, and has a hard abdomen, it indicates a fatal prognosis. Generally, for a newborn son, family members should not hastily allow outsiders to enter the room for inspection, as each household has its own deities protecting it. There is also fear that axillary odors or unclean menstrual blood of women might trigger Ke Wu. This constitutes the method of infant care.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: Shear the spiral hair from the shoulder blade of the foreleg of a donkey, sized like a bean. Decoct it in milk until the hair dissolves. Once the medicine is prepared, apply it to the nipple for the infant to drink. Upon swallowing into the throat, the patient recovers immediately. Another method: Burn three cun of the mother's girdle and hair, mix with milk, and administer orally. Another method: Administer nasal mucus from a cow. Another method: Apply saliva from a cow's mouth to the nipple for the infant to drink.
To treat young children who feel unwell upon seeing people and have sounds in their abdomen, use the Sanwu Shaofen San (Three-Item Calcined Powder) formula.
Usage: Take ten strands of hair from the anterior fontanelle of a deceased person previously known, cut a small piece of the infant's umbilical cord, calcine them together into ash, grind into fine powder, mix with milk, and feed to the infant for immediate recovery.
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: Whenever one travels by horse and acquires the foul odor of horse sweat, without washing hands or changing clothes, and approaches the infant, it causes the infant to suffer from "Ma Ke Wu" (Horse Guest Invasion). The infant suddenly seeing a horse, hearing the neighing of a horse in fright, or coming into contact with items from the horse or the scent of the horse, will all lead to Ma Ke Wu in children. Careful protection is required, especially for infants under one year old. The symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting or purging of blue, yellow, or white substances, separation of water and grain (digestive failure), and in severe cases, premature death.
The *Qianjin Fang* method for treating infant Ma Ke Wu (applicable to both human and animal guest invasions):
Make pills from rice flour, the size of soybeans. Rub these pills on the infant's palms, soles, chest center, and above and below the umbilicus, moving in circles. Recite the incantation: "Grandfather Mo, Grandmother Mo, Child Mo suffers from Guest Invasion, starting from me. Although Bian Que is skilled, he is not as effective as spitting." After reciting, discard the pill in the road.
Another method:
Place a knife horizontally on the stove. Undress the infant to expose the heart and abdomen (*Yi* commentary notes: expose the heart and abdomen). Hold the knife towards the infant and recite the incantation: "Spit! Point the knife at the heart and abdomen. Feifei (sound of spitting), Huanghuang. The sun rises in the east, turning back from shade to face the light. Ge Gong, Ge Gong, do not know which Gong you are (*Ji* commentary notes: Ge Gong Ge Mu do not know which Gong). You come without looking, you leave without caring, offending the living. Dust on the beam is traversed by heavenly deities, soil under the door is passed by ghosts. Great sword ring rhinoceros faces the Stove Lord. Spit seven times. The guest departs, the child calms, spit Feifei." Each time spitting, point the knife at the spot. Recite the incantation three times to complete. Use the soybean pill also following the above method five or six times. After completion, break the pill to check if there is hair inside; if present, discard it in the road. Human or Horse Guest Invasion will then be cured.
The *Jianyao Jizhong Shu* (Essential Prescriptions for Helping the Masses) treats infant Ma Du Ke Wu (Horse Poison Guest Invasion) by burning horse tail hair in front of the infant, allowing the infant to inhale the smoke. Burn daily until recovered.
Another prescription: Apply saliva from the corner of a horse's mouth to the infant's mouth. Effective.
