Chao Yuanfang stated: Pediatric Zhong'e (Sudden Attack by Evil Qi) is caused by the sudden invasion of ghostly and evil qi into the human body. Regardless of age, if Yin and Yang are harmonious, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are balanced, and the Shen (Spirit) is firmly held, then evil qi cannot invade the righteous Qi; however, if Jing (Essence) and Qi are weak, one will be attacked by ghostly poison and evil qi. The manifestation is characterized by no prior illness, but suddenly experiencing stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, accompanied by stifling confusion and a desire to die. In cases of Zhong'e with abdominal distension and fullness, a pulse that is tight, large, and floating indicates a fatal prognosis; a pulse that is tight, fine, and weak indicates a favorable prognosis. If residual pathogenic factors remain stagnant between the Zang and Fu organs, subsequent recurrences may transform into Zhu disease (chronic infectious or debilitating disease). The treatment method involves first administering Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pills) to open the orifices; if consciousness is not restored, blow Rhizoma Belamcandae powder (Zaojiao Mo) into the nasal cavity to induce sneezing, followed by the administration of Chenxiang Jiangqi Tang (Aucklandia Decoction for Descending Qi) supplemented with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Poria (Fuling). This formula also expels evil qi and is suitable for Ke Wu (Sudden Shock from External Factors).
Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pills): Treats Chuanshen Guzheng (Consumptive bone-steaming diseases such as tuberculosis), various Laozai (Deficiency-wasting syndromes), regulates Qi and transforms phlegm, sudden severe chest pain, ghostly malaria, Huoluan (Cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea), red and white dysentery, and pediatric convulsions.
Ingredients: Suhe Xiang You (Styrax Oil, 5 qian, incorporated into Anxi Xiang paste); Anxi Xiang (Benzoin Resin, 1 liang, separately ground into powder, boiled with half sheng of non-fermented wine into a paste); Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos); Qingmuxiang (Lithospermi Radix); Baitanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum); Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinum); Bibo (Piperis Fructus); Xiangfumie (Cyperi Rhizoma); Hezi (Arecae Semen, roasted, flesh only); Wuxi (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved into flakes); Zhusha (Cinnabaris, ground and processed by water levigation. Each 1 liang); Xunluxiang (Olibanum); Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum, ground. Each 5 qian); Shexiang (Moschus, 7.5 qian).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with Anxi Xiang paste and refined honey to form pills the size of Euphorbia seed (Qianshi). Take on an empty stomach, dissolved in boiling water. Children take one pill; elderly take four pills. Can also be taken with wine. Wrap one pill in wax paper, size of a bullet, store in a crimson silk bag, and carry it always; all evil spirits dare not approach. Removing Pian Nao yields Moxiang Suhexiang Wan, which treats all evil spirit invasions, chest and diaphragm obstruction, intestinal rumbling, retained food, and other symptoms identical to the main formula.
Chenxiang Jiangqi Tang (Aucklandia Decoction for Descending Qi):
Xiangjiu Xiang (Daemonorops Spica); Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinum); Baijiaoxiang (Agarici Resina); Hujingg Gu (Pantheris Os, roasted with butter); Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Guijian Yu (Araliae Chinensis Ramulus); Caolongdan (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix. Each 5 qian).
Grind into powder. Add Xionghuang (Realgar, 5 qian) and Shexiang (Moschus, 1 qian). Form pills with refined honey. Dissolve in Ruxiang Tang (Frankincense Decoction) before ingestion. Alternatively, have the child wear the pills or burn them in the sleeping area for superior effect.
Ge Hong's *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve) methods for resuscitation from sudden death, or those who were previously ill or died suddenly during rest/sleep, all classified as Zhong'e:
Method 1: Use the yellow core of scallion (Congbai) to pierce the nasal cavity. For males, use the left nostril; for females, the right. Insert approximately 7-8 cun deep (adjust for children). It is beneficial if blood flows from the eyes. Bian Que’s method is similar. Later texts mention blowing into ears; Ge Hong notes this piercing method is distinct.
Method 2: Have two people cover the mouth and nose with cloth, and blow air into both ears. Change persons when exhausted. A tube may be used for blowing. Support the shoulders, turn the body sideways, and keep distance; do not face the head directly.
Method 3: Use a scallion leaf needle to prick the ears. Bleeding from ears or nose is expected; lack of bleeding suggests difficult treatment, while bleeding indicates a positive sign. At this stage, hold the hands and suddenly release them. Soon, the eyes will open, and hands may grasp at people. Cease stimulation when the patient complains of pain. Alternatively, pierce the left nostril for males and right for females, inserting 7-8+ cun. Effective for self-strangulation as well, consistent with Bian Que’s methods.
Method 4: Soak cotton in good wine. Place in the nose shortly after, pressing with hand to ensure juice enters. Hold limbs to prevent startling.
Method 5: Inspect the inner upper lip for white spots resembling millet grains. Pierce and remove them with a needle.
Method 6: Pour urine over the face multiple times until speech returns. This is Bian Que’s method.
Method 7: Grind Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fructus) into powder. Blow soy-bean-sized amounts into both nostrils. Sneezing indicates restoration of Qi flow.
Method 8: Cut the neck of a male rooster, apply blood to the face repeatedly until dry. Draw a circle around the deceased using ash.
Method 9: Use a tube to blow into the lower orifice (anus). Multiple people should alternate blowing. Life returns when Qi flows.
Qianjin Fang (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for Cu Wu (Sudden Attack): This condition corresponds to modern Zhong'e, similar to sudden death and Guiji (Ghost Strike). Treatments are often combined.
Formula: Yan (Halitum, 8 he). Boil in 3 sheng of water until 1.5 sheng remains. Divide into two doses. Recovery occurs upon vomiting.
Beiji Fang (Emergency Prescriptions for Emergencies) states: For Guiji with urinary retention, burn 7 pen tips into ash, grind, and administer orally. Urination resumes immediately.
Shenghui Fang (Holy Grace Formulas) Taonuo San (Peach Twig Powder): Treats pediatric Zhong'e with hard, distended, painful abdomen, cyanotic-black complexion, and constipation.
Ingredients: Taonuo (Dried Peach Twig, 5 pieces); Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted to light red, cut, 1 fen); Shexiang (Moschus, finely ground, 1 qian); Xingren (Apricot Seed, soaked, skin and twin kernels removed, bran-roasted to light yellow, 20 pieces); Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, de-radicle); Chishao (Red Peony Root); Huangqin (Scutellaria Root); Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, de-radicle); Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, cut, lightly roasted); Guijiu (Podocarpi Caulis. Each 0.5 liang).
Crush and sieve coarsely. Take 1 qian per dose. Boil in 1 small cup of water until 0.5 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time. Continue until bowel movement occurs. Adjust dosage based on child’s age and condition.
Shenghui Fang Guijianyu San (Aralia Chinensis Ramulus Powder): Treats pediatric Zhong'e with rigid heart/chest and sudden severe pain leading to exhaustion.
Ingredients: Guijian Yu (Araliae Chinensis Ramulus); Zhenzhu (Margarita, powdered. Each 1 fen); Lingyang Jiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, shaved); Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, de-radicle); Chuan Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas); Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); Chishao (Red Peony Root); Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, de-radicle); Huangqin (Scutellaria Root. Each 0.5 liang); Taoren (Pruni Semen, soaked, skin and twin kernels removed, bran-roasted to light yellow, 10 pieces); Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, cut, lightly roasted, 1 liang).
Preparation and administration same as above.
Shenghui Fang Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill): Treats pediatric Zhong'e with heart pain, expelling evil qi.
Ingredients: Xionghuang (Realgar, finely ground); Zhenzhu (Margarita, powdered. Each 0.5 liang); Shexiang (Moschus); Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, finely ground. Each 1 qian); Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 20 grains, skin and membrane removed, ground, wrapped in paper, pressed to remove oil).

Boil in 4 sheng of water until 1.2 sheng remains. For a two-year-old, divide into four parts. Adjust dosage according to the child’s size.
Ge Hong's *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* Moxibustion Methods: Measure the wrist circumference with a string. For males, left wrist; for females, right wrist. Extend the string from the Dazhui GV14 point down the back. From there, measure horizontally across the back half the length of the string. Apply moxibustion three times, three moxa cones each time, to restore consciousness. Additionally, press the Renzhung CV26 point to awaken the patient. If unresponsive, roll up the arm and apply moxibustion at the wrist crease proportional to age. Also apply three cones to the nose. Apply ten cones to Chengjiang CV24 (depression below chin). Effect is significant. Apply seven cones to the center of the hair tuft near the nail of the big toe (Hua Tuo’s method, alternatively thirty-seven cones). Apply one hundred cones to the umbilicus (Qihai CV8/Shenque CV8 area).
