Hyperextension of the body (opisthotonos). Moxibustion, three moxa cones, at a point three fen above the root of the nose entering the hairline. Moxibustion, three moxa cones, in the interspace below the Dazhui (GV14) acupoint.
Mr. Tang stated: If the body is soft and the patient regains consciousness intermittently, it is Epilepsy (Xian); if the body is rigid, hyperextended like a bow, and the patient does not regain consciousness promptly, it is Tetanus (Jing). Among cases of Tetanus, ten out of ten are fatal.
[Tang] Head shaking caused by Liver Wind was not recorded in other medical formulas. The son of Chancellor Zheng suffered from head shaking for seven years and hematochezia for three years. He had already taken over a hundred prescriptions. Previous treatments for head shaking consisted solely of wind-dispelling herbs; treatments for bleeding were either classified as Dysentery or Intestinal Wind. All medicines proved ineffective. Upon examining his condition and understanding the details, I initially did not grasp the root cause. After reflecting, I determined that Liver Blood was excessive, with external Wind-Heat invading. The Liver belongs to Wood; when excessive, it overacts on Spleen Earth. Since the Spleen and Lung share a mother-child relationship, both were subdued by the Liver, causing blood to permeate into the stool, resulting in persistent hematochezia. Therefore, I prescribed a formula aimed at subduing the Liver, dispelling Wind, and tonifying the Spleen. This was initially a tentative insight, but he recovered after only a few doses. More than ten days later, the bleeding stopped, but white pus was discharged, after which he stabilized.
Qinggan Yiwei Wan (Clear the Liver and Benefit the Stomach Pill)
Xijiao Xie (Rhinoceros Horn Shavings), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 fen), Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (honey-fried), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Baishao Yao (White Peony Root) (0.5 liang in winter), Shetui Pi (Snake Slough) (fried until red), Gouteng Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (nodes removed, each 1 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (5 liang).
Grind all ingredients into powder, form pills using jujube paste. Take after meals with Mint Decoction. Only two doses were needed for efficacy; head shaking ceased immediately, and hematochezia healed subsequently. Intermittently take Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction), and within a few days, the disease was completely eradicated. The son of Scholar Shen also showed positive results with this prescription.
[Xue] The Classics state: "All wind syndromes involving tremors and vertigo belong to Liver Wood." Wood shakes when exposed to wind; this indicates deficiency-Wind generated by excessive Fire in the Liver Meridian. Hematochezia occurs because the shaking Wind-Wood harasses Earth, impairing the Spleen's ability to control blood. Alternatively, excessive consumption of sour flavors may strengthen the Spleen Qi, leading to Yin condensation. The Classics state: In Jieyin Syndrome (Condensed Yin Syndrome), one sheng of blood is passed in stool; upon re-condensation, two sheng; upon third condensation, three sheng. Furthermore, pathogenic factors in the Zang organs cause disharmony of the Yin vessels; disharmony of Yin vessels leads to blood stasis. In Jieyin disease, Yin Qi condenses internally and cannot circulate outward, seeping into the intestines, thus causing hematochezia. There are also cases where infants suffer from persistent head shaking due to their wet nurse's condition. Later, an elderly physician added Ziheche (Human Placenta) to the usual medication, resulting in immediate recovery. Note: Ziheche is listed here as a herb name. In *Shennong Bencao Jing*, it is named Chonglou (Paris Polyphylla); in *Tang Bencao*, it is named Jinxian Chonglou; in *Qian's Formulas*, it is named Bai Gansui. It treats convulsions, epilepsy, head shaking, and tongue protrusion. This is recorded in the main text of *Bencao Jing*. The ancients said that following the "Bai" (White) character therapy yields many effective results. This is not false.
