[Xue Ji] "Xiao'er Yaozheng Zhijue" (Prescriptions for Infant Diseases) states: A newborn infant is merely a mass of blood and qi, presenting neither obvious external symptoms nor discernible pulse. If affected by fright, it is termed fetal fright (Taijing); if affected by heat, it is termed fetal heat (Taire). The infant and the nursing mother are physiologically one. Whenever sores and ulcers occur, if one examines and finds heat in the mother's Liver Meridian, formulas such as JiaWei XiaoChaiHu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) should be used; if there is deficiency-heat in the Liver Meridian, formulas such as JiaWei XiaoYao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) should be used. If Kidney Water fails to nourish Liver Wood (Water generates Wood), DiHuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) is indicated. For accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian, ChaiHu ZhiZi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder) is used. For deficiency-heat in the Heart Meridian, FuLing BuXin Tang (Poria Tonifying Heart Decoction) is used. For accumulation-heat caused by rich and greasy diet, Li Dongyuan's QingWei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) is used. For stagnant heat in the Spleen Meridian, Qian Shi's XieHuang San (Spleen-Draining Powder) is used; for deficiency-heat in the Spleen Meridian, Qian Shi's YiGong San (Extraordinary Assistant Powder) is used. If one takes XiJiao Wan (Rhinoceros Horn Pill) or HuaDu Dan (Toxin-Resolving Pellet), and applies cold-cooling medicines externally, it will further damage the body's vital generating qi, thereby accelerating the critical condition.
This condition arises from consuming rich and greasy foods, or from emotional stagnation transforming into fire in the nursing mother. If the area is swollen and painful, this indicates stagnation of qi and blood; XianFang HuoMing Yin (Immortal Formula for Reviving Life Decoction) is indicated. If there is thirst and constipation, this indicates internal accumulation of toxic heat; SiShun QingLiang Yin (Four-Obedience Cooling Decoction) is used, assisted by RuSheng Bing (Like-Sage Cake). If the swelling is hard and red, this indicates condensation of toxic heat; HuoMing Yin (Reviving Life Decoction) is used, assisted by GeSuan Jiu (Garlic-Separated Moxibustion). If the swelling does not subside, it indicates impending suppuration; TuoLi XiaoDu San (Supporting Interior and Resolving Toxin Powder) is indicated. If suppuration does not form or forms but does not ulcerate, this indicates deficiency of qi and blood; BaZhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) is used. If after ulceration the flesh is red but does not heal, this indicates deficiency of Spleen blood; SiWu ShenZhu Tang (Four-Substance with Ginseng and Atractylodes Decoction) is used. If the flesh is white and does not heal, this indicates weakness of Spleen qi; SiJun XiongGui Tang (Four-Gentleman with Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction) is used. If appetite is poor and the body is fatigued without healing, this indicates deficiency of Spleen qi; LiuJun DangGui ShengMa Tang (Six-Gentleman with Angelica and Cimicifuga Decoction) is used. When the medicine matches the syndrome, there is no cure that fails. However, if one recklessly uses attacking and detoxifying drugs, causing depletion of yuan qi (primordial qi), it will transform into a malignant syndrome that is difficult to treat. Generally speaking, sores and ulcers belonging to the fu organs are easy to treat; if yuan qi is not depleted, they may even heal spontaneously without treatment. Sores and ulcers belonging to the zang organs are difficult to treat; if yuan qi is depleted, they will transform into malignant syndromes. Mistaken use of purgative/attacking methods depletes yuan qi, making them particularly difficult to manage; therefore, harsh and severe agents must absolutely be avoided. Observing the words of Li Dongyuan and Zhu Danxi: whenever swelling and pain are seen, refer to the pulse and symptoms; if deficiency is present, provide tonification. As long as blood and qi are not depleted, ultimate auspiciousness can be guaranteed. If expelling and detoxifying methods are used, there is inevitably the disaster of "making the deficient more deficient."

WuFu HuaDu Dan (Five-Fortunes Toxin-Resolving Pellet) treats accumulated heat-toxin causing red cheeks, dry throat, mouth and tongue sores, or head/face sores/furuncles, delirium, and restlessness. (Formula see Convulsions section)
Note: The previous formulas are blood-nourishing, blood-cooling, and cold-resolving agents. They are highly effective for patients with both physical strength and excess syndromes, but stop after one or two pills. Excessive use damages yuan qi (primordial qi), leading to unpredictable changes.
XiJiao XiaoDu Wan (Rhinoceros Horn Toxin-Resolving Pill) treats accumulated heat and sores arising from residual toxins after smallpox/rash.

Make into powder, mix with refined honey, and make pills the size of euryale seed. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in mint tea.
Note: The previous two formulas easily damage middle qi and injure yin blood. They might be usable for adults with excess syndromes and robust spleen/stomach function, but infants have fragile internal organs and cannot withstand these. The Classics state: Qi governs ventilation/movement, Blood governs moistening. Qi refers to the harmonious primordial qi in the stomach. If stomach qi is injured, it cannot ventilate and moisten to dissipate; formed pus cannot rot and ulcerate, and ulcerated wounds cannot generate flesh and close. Thus, it becomes difficult to treat, potentially fatal. Caution is essential.

Fu Rong Ye (Hibiscus Mutabilis Leaf); Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark); Da Huang (Rhubarb Root); Wu Bei Zi (Gallnut); Bai Ji (Bletilla Rhizome).
Pulverize. Mix with water and apply around the perimeter.
Note: The previous formula is a cold-cooling, heat-resolving, and astringent agent. Some use Bai Lian (Belamcanda Rhizome) or Shang Lu Gen (Phytolacca Root); some use Han Shui Shi (Halloysite) or Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root); some use Cang Er Zi (Xanthium Fruit) or Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle); some use Ba Jiao (Banana) or Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean); some use Cao Wu (Aconite) and Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica). These are indiscriminate mixtures of cold, heat, warm, and cool properties. The Neijing states: Swelling preceding pain indicates injury to form affecting qi; pain preceding swelling indicates injury to qi affecting form. It also states: Disharmony of the five zang organs leads to blockage of the nine orifices; disharmony of the six fu organs leads to retention and condensation forming carbuncles. Waike Jingyi states: High and soft swellings originate in blood vessels; low and hard swellings originate in sinews and vessels; unchanged skin color originates in bone marrow. There must be internal causes manifesting externally. Therefore, the affected meridian and location vary; why apply cold medicines uniformly? Only when spleen/stomach are intact and qi/blood are disharmonious might it be effective. Taking toxin-resolving drugs again injures spleen/stomach, causing qi/blood stagnation, preventing resolution. For ding sores (hard cancers), the goal is to draw out toxins; using cold medicines causes muscle coldness and qi/blood stagnation, leading to internal toxin invasion and death. Treatment must observe height/spread, color/redness/whiteness, pain severity, ease of suppuration, thickness of discharge, and speed of flesh regeneration to distinguish yin/yang, half-yin/half-yang, or pure yin/pure yang, and use appropriate cooling, heating, or harmonizing medicines. One must also examine meridian evolution and zang organ interactions, prioritizing spleen/stomach tonification to avoid malignant transformation.
Shen Gong San treats initial swelling of sores/ulcers; effective for reduction, adding Xue Jie (Dragon's Blood) is better. Also usable for erysipelas before pricking.
Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, stir-fried); Cao Wu (Aconitum Carmichaelii Root, raw).
Separately pulverize, equal parts. Apply mixed with mouthwash solution, keeping moist with frequent rinsing.
The above pastes, swelling-reducing, pus-draining, flesh-generating, and wound-closing formulas are detailed in "Yangyi Zhunsheng" (Standard Guidelines for Surgeons), please consult that text. No further repetition here.
