The *Qianjin Fang* records three conditions: umbilical wind (Umbilical Wind), umbilical dampness (Umbilical Dampness), and umbilical sores (Umbilical Sores). All three are caused by wind-damp pathogenic factors invading the navel after the umbilical cord is cut. When wind pathogen enters the navel, it causes swelling of the navel and abdominal distension, limited movement of the four limbs, excessive crying, and inability to suckle milk. In severe cases, convulsions occur; this is called Umbilical Wind. If the swelling and dampness persist without drying for a long time, it is called Umbilical Dampness. When wind and dampness struggle with each other, causing sores on the navel that do not heal for a long time, it is called Umbilical Sores. If any one of these conditions remains unresolved, the pathogen may enter the meridians and collaterals, often transforming into epilepsy (Epilepsy). Once epilepsy is formed, it should be treated according to the protocols for epilepsy.
Umbilical Wind refers to the condition where, after cutting the umbilical cord, water-dampness and wind-cold pathogens invade due to deficiency. The wind-damp qi enters the navel and flows into the Heart and Spleen, leading to abdominal distension, navel swelling, heaviness of the body, stiffness and straightening of the four limbs, ceaseless crying day and night, inability to suckle, and in severe cases, development of wind-convulsions (Wind Convulsions). If the edges of the navel turn cyanotic or black, and the mouth puckers shut unable to open, this is internal convulsion (Internal Convulsion), which is incurable. If the fingernails turn black, death ensues immediately. If heat resides in the chest and diaphragm, causing labored breathing and straining, it can also lead to navel swelling; in such cases, Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) from the *Qianjin Fang* is indicated (formula see previous section). Qian Yi stated: When bathing infants, if the navel is not dried thoroughly, wind pathogen invades causing sores, leading to puckering of the mouth in the infant. Severe cases indicate Spleen deficiency and Stomach Qi disharmony; regulating Qi with Yihuang San (Yellow Regulating Powder) is appropriate (formula see Spleen section). *Leicui* states: It is appropriate to first use Kongtan Yin (Phlegm-Controlling Drink) to induce vomiting of wind-phlegm, then use Yipi San (Spleen-Strengthening Powder) to harmonize the Spleen, and finally use Chen Sha Gao (Cinnabar Paste) to clear fright and calm spirit, resulting in recovery. If there is curling of the hands and feet, clenched fists, and trismus (lockjaw) preventing opening, it is incurable. Zeng's method involves first administering Jiefeng Gao (Wind-Seizing Paste), followed by Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) combined with Kuanqi Yin (Qi-Widening Drink), decocted with ginger juice, scallion white, and Juncus effusus (Rush Pith) in water for oral administration, to resolve wind-phlegm. Additionally, Yizi Jin (One-Character Gold) should be applied using Jingjie Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction) or Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction) to smear inside the mouth; mild cases recover quickly. For infants with robust constitution presenting fever, phlegm, and fright-convulsions, Heibai Yin (Black-and-White Drink) should be administered, mixed with warm honey water on an empty stomach. Mild diarrhea of two to three movements, dark tea-colored, indicates efficacy. Subsequently, Baishao Yao Tang (White Peony Root Decoction) should be given, decocted with water, ginger, and jujube. This method is commonly used and effective. If the navel protrudes, the abdomen is tight, slightly cyanotic, and the mouth puckers shut unable to open, this indicates flourishing Liver Wind suppressing Spleen Earth; treatment is contraindicated. Any case presenting these signs is essentially untreatable; even if survival occurs, longevity is unlikely.
Kongtan San (Phlegm-Controlling Powder)

Saposhnikovia Root (Fang Feng, remove rhizome), Notopterygium Rhizome and Root (Qiang Huo), Astragalus Root (Huang Qi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui), Angelica Dahurica Root (Chuan Baizhi), Licorice Root (Gan Cao). Half qian each.
Grind into extremely fine powder. Take a small amount, dissolved in Juncus effusus and Ophiopogon Decoction (heart removed). Take at any time.
Jiefeng Gao (Wind-Seizing Paste): Treats acute and chronic convulsions, umbilical wind with puckered mouth, lockjaw, copious salivation, and sore throat.
Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root? No, Lingzhi Xian is likely Salvia miltiorrhiza or similar, but traditionally "Wu Ling Xian" is Saposhnikovia or Glehnia? Actually, Wu Ling Xian is usually Glehnia littoralis or Saposhnikovia divaricata. Wait, standard TCM Wu Ling Xian is Glehniae Radix or Saposhnikoviae Radix. Let's stick to the name. Glehnia Root / Saposhnikovia Root (Wu Ling Xian, remove rhizome, 1.5 liang, finely chopped, dried, ground).
Take Sophora Flavescens Stem? No, Zao Jiao is Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit. Remove skin and strings, crush, soak in one bowl of warm water, filter through silk cloth. Simmer over low heat until thick paste-like. Add half liang of pure vinegar, boil three to five times. Remove from heat, cool. Mix evenly with the aforementioned herb powder in a mortar. Form pills the size of Euryale Seed (Qian Shi). First, rub salt plum meat on the gums. Then, take one or two pills of this paste, mix thickly with warm plain water, and smear into the left and right jaw joints to open the mouth. Continue with other medicines. Use earthenware vessels for boiling, silver is best. To resolve copious wind-phlegm, dissolve in light ginger tea, swallow slowly at any time. For sore throat, take with warm tea liquor or mint decoction.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) (Formula see previous).
Kuanqi Yin (Qi-Widening Drink) (See Fright section).
Yizi Jin (One-Character Gold): Treats newborns after one week who are developing umbilical wind with puckered mouth, or sudden onset of acute/chronic convulsions, lockjaw, and upper respiratory phlegm obstruction.
Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiang Can, stir-fried, remove silk), Glehnia Root / Saposhnikovia Root (Wu Ling Xian, remove rhizome, 4 qian each), White Alum (Ming Fan, raw, 2 qian), Asarum Root (Xi Xin, remove leaves, 1 qian), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, raw, 2.5 qian).
Cut, dry, and grind into powder. Administer one zi to half a qian per dose, mixed with ginger juice and boiling water. Smear into the jaw joints with a finger. For sudden acute/chronic convulsions with lockjaw, use salt plum tea to rub the upper and lower gum lines.
Heibai Yin (Black-and-White Drink): Treats excess type of umbilical wind qi, and acute fright with high fever and convulsions.
Black Morning Glory Seed (Hei Qian Niu, half raw half fried), White Morning Glory Seed (Bai Qian Niu, half raw half fried), Rhubarb (Da Huang, raw), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi, remove white pith), Areca Seed (Bing Lang, 0.5 liang each), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, honey-fried, 3 qian), Mirabilite (Xuan Ming Fen, 2 qian).
Except for Areca Seed which should not be overheated, sun-dry or bake the other five herbs. Grind together with Areca Seed into powder. Mix with Mirabilite in a mortar until uniform. Administer half a qian to one qian per dose, dissolved in warm honey water. Take on an empty stomach or at any time. Freshly prepared medicine is most effective; old medicine acts slowly.
Baishao Yao Tang (White Peony Root Decoction) (Formula see Hernia section).
Zhang Huan's Navel-Sealing Powder: Treats newborns whose mothers were careless during bathing, allowing water into the navel, or urine in the swaddling clothes, causing dampness injury to the navel, or loose clothing exposing the navel to wind-cold pathogens. This leads to navel swelling, excessive crying, and inability to suckle, named Umbilical Wind Disease. Use urgently.
Good Sichuan Angelica Sinensis Root (Chuan Dang Gui, 0.5 liang, washed, dried), Heavenly Pulpit Seed (Tian Jiang Zi, 3 pieces, lightly fried), Tangled Hair (Luan Fa, 1 qian, burned to ash retaining nature).
Pound together, sieve into fine powder. Mix with one zi of Musk. Apply one zi to half a qian to the navel, apply frequently.
*San Yin Fang* records: Infants suddenly developing umbilical wind with puckered mouth within seven days of birth, where all medicines fail, watching them die is pitiable. There is a method rarely known in the world. For any case, examine the infant's gums for small blisters like millet grains. Dip a cooked cloth in warm water, wrap around the finger, and gently wipe the blisters until broken. The mouth will open immediately, and the child will be safe. This is miraculous without medication.
For newborns with umbilical wind and puckered mouth unresponsive to drugs: Moxibustion at Rangu (KI2). The point is located in the depression anterior to the prominence of the medial malleolus. Moxa cone: 3 moxa cones. Acupuncture depth: 0.3 cun. Avoid bleeding. Immediate effect. For umbilical wind with eyes rolling upward, puncture Sizhukong (TE23). For navel swelling, moxa at the vertebral level corresponding to the navel, 3 moxa cones, cone size like a wheat grain.
Umbilical wind with puckered mouth in infants under 100 days is mostly incurable.
