[Hezi (Zhang Yuansu)] The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: "Cold sores with flowing fluid," commonly known as frostbite. For those not healing after years, take pure soil from the wild, dry it in the sun, grind garlic into a paste, shape it into a cake with the thickness of a Daguan coin, and apply it to the wound according to its size. Apply moxibustion on top of the cake until the soil dries out. Remove the dried cake and replace it with a wet one for continued moxibustion, without limit, until the scab feels painful or itchy, indicating the wound is treatable. Then rinse and soak with saliva-water (water held in the mouth), using twenty chicken feathers bound together as a brush to gently scrub the wound clean. This method prevents damage to the muscle tissue. Dry with a soft cloth. Apply Muxiang Binglang San (Buckthorn and Areca Nut Powder). Treatment in summer is even more effective.
[Popular Prescription] Redness and swelling of the heel due to frostbite. He Gu point (located under the bone at the junction of red and white flesh behind the left foot's toes; puncture 3 cun, use flicking needle technique to bleed, can be moxibusted 21-27 times).
For ulcerated frostbite of the heel, wash with Cong Jiao Tang (Scallion and Pepper Decoction), scrape off necrotic tissue, bleed using a three-edged needle, then mix Mapibo (Smilax Glabra Rhizome) with raw bovine bone marrow and apply externally for efficacy.
[Yuxi] Take one male rat that died in the twelfth lunar month, add one sheng of oil, boil until the rat is thoroughly softened, strain out the residue, and boil again to form an ointment. Apply to frostbite and broken sores.
To treat frostbite, burn eggplant roots to ash, wash the area, and apply sparrow brain marrow.
[Danyang (Zhu Danxi)] To treat frostbite, use boiled tung oil mixed with Miduoseng (Litharge) for external application.
[Shan] Use Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), decoct in water for washing.
Rushen San (Formula by Luo) Treats frostbite with skin erosion and unbearable pain. Use Chuan Dahuang (Rheum Palmatum Rhizome) in any amount, ground into fine powder. Mix with fresh water and sweep/apply onto the frostbitten, broken skin; pain stops immediately with striking effect.
[Hezi (Zhang Yuansu)] Dai Ren’s (Zhang Yuansu's courtesy name) female servant had frostbite on her feet. Dai Ren ordered her to take Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) and Junchuan San (River Clearing Powder) for strong purgation, resulting in recovery. Some people doubted this? Dai Ren said: "When Heart Fire descends, cold dissipates; what is there to doubt?"
Zhi Nao Gao (Pheasant Brain Ointment) Treats chronic frostbite that recurs annually, starting with itching followed by pain, then swelling, rupture, and continuous discharge of yellow fluid and blood.
Xiong Zhi Nao (Male Pheasant Brain, one piece, pounded to paste) Huang La (Beeswax, equal parts) Qing You (Clear Oil, half the amount)
Simmer all ingredients slowly over low heat until they form an ointment, filter out residues, and store in porcelain containers. Apply to the wound each time.
Bai Ye Gao (Cypress Leaf Ointment) Treats frostbite where fingers/toes are about to fall off or ears are about to detach.
Bai Ye (Cupressus Leaves, roasted dry and powdered, 4 liang) Xing Ren (Apricot Kernels, peeled and pounded, 40 pieces) Tou Fa (Human Hair, fist-sized) Yan Yan (Rock Salt, half liang, pounded) Ru Xiang (Frankincense, 2.5 qian, pounded) Huang La (Beeswax, 1 liang) You (Oil, 1 sheng)
First boil the oil, then add the first five herbs. Once the medicinal aroma is released, add the beeswax and stir evenly. Store in a porcelain box. First wash the wound with warm urine, dab dry with cotton, then apply the medicine. Wrap with soft cloth to prevent cold air invasion. Change daily; if the wound improves, change every 3-4 days.
Golan San (Olive Kernel Powder) Treats foot frostbite.
Burn olive kernels to ash while preserving their nature, grind into powder. Add Qingfen (Calomel), mix with oil, and apply.
A girl of several years old went to the capital during severe cold. Her feet became numb from freezing. She soaked them in hot water. By spring, all ten fingers were rotten and hanging on. I used Tuo Li formulas (supporting interior tonics) to assist her Yang Qi to naturally separate the dead tissue, thereby saving her life. This was because Cold Evil obstructed circulation, preventing vital energy flow, compounded by soaking in hot water, leading to necrosis without pain. I have seen people who go out in extreme cold suffer ear frostbite, losing sensation. If touched by hand, the ear may detach. They should remain in a warm place for a long time or be warmed by hands to recover safely. If exposed to fire or hot water, the ear will die completely and inevitably slough off by spring. Northern cold damages humans so severely; one must examine this carefully.
