Dai Yuan Shi (Minister Dai) stated: To disperse various toxins, crush white hibiscus leaves (Hibisci Mutabilis Folium), add a small amount of aconite root powder (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), and mix with honey for application. For severe cases, add pinellia tuber powder (Pinelliae Rhizoma). For any toxin treated with poultices, if the goal is dispersion, rub in musk (Moschus); if the goal is suppuration, rub in realgar (Realgar).
Chonghe Xian Gao (Harmonizing Immortal Paste, also known as Huangyun Gao): Use this for conditions where cold and heat are indistinguishable; treat according to the syndrome with tea or wine.
Sophora Root Bark (Sophorae Flavescentis Cortex, 5 liang, stir-fried, also known as Hongrou or Neixiao), Angelica Pubescens Root (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 3 liang, stir-fried, do not use the joint), Red Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 2 liang, stir-fried), Angelica Dahurica Root (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, protected from fire, 1 liang), Mula (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, also known as Wangjianxiao or Yangchunxue, dosage adjusted flexibly for excellent results).
The above five herbs are ground into fine powder. Specific usage methods are detailed below.
Generally, carbuncles, sores, flowing deposits (Liuzhu), and miscellaneous diseases are all formed by qi and blood stagnation. They thrive when warm and perish when cold; thriving leads to dispersion, perishing leads to coagulation. This medicine is warm and neutral. Sophora Root Bark is the essence of wood, capable of breaking qi, driving out blood, and reducing swelling. Angelica Pubescens Root is the essence of earth, capable of dispelling wind, moving blood, guiding qi, extracting bone toxins, removing bi-syndrome dampness, and working with Mula to break hard stone-like swellings. Red Peony Root is the essence of fire, slightly nourishing blood, stopping pain, and dispelling wind. Mula is the essence of water, capable of nourishing blood, stopping pain, reducing swelling, breaking wind, and dispersing blood. Angelica Dahurica Root is the essence of metal, capable of dispelling wind, generating flesh, and stopping pain. Generally, if blood is generated, death is avoided; if blood moves, it circulates; if flesh generates, rotting is prevented; if pain stops, recurrence is halted; if wind is removed, blood disperses naturally; if qi is broken, hardness dissipates, and toxins scatter. With these five effects attacking together, how can the disease fail to heal?
First, diseases have three syndromes, and treatments have three methods. If the disease is extremely hot, double the amount of Sophora Root Bark and Mula in this formula, and reduce the other three ingredients; it can still disperse, though the effect may be slower. If the disease is extremely cold, slightly increase Red Peony Root and Angelica Pubescens Root in this formula; it can also move blood and disperse, with a slightly slower effect but without damaging the condition. If the heat syndrome is intense, do not use wine to mix the medicine; instead, use scallion-infused water. Apply the medicine hot to the affected area because scallions also disperse qi, and blood moves when heated, hence the hot compress. If the disease subsides slightly, use wine to mix the medicine again, as wine generates blood (more so when heated) and promotes blood circulation (more so when warm).
Second, if there are blood blisters on the sore surface that turn into small ulcers, do not use Mula, as its sticky nature may cause pain upon removal. Instead, apply the four other ingredients first, then cover with Mula, and surround the perimeter to intercept the blood flow assisting the attack. All applications must be hot compresses; if dry, re-wet with the original decoction to allow the medicinal properties to steam and act, causing the disease to recede.
Third, if using the main formula and the black halo around does not fade, and the sore mouth lacks blood color, it indicates excessive prior use of cold medicines. Do not immediately use Yulong Gao, as the tissue is not yet necrotic; strong medication might increase pain. Add Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to this formula to revive stagnant blood. The black halo will naturally fade, showing efficacy. Once blood returns, remove the added herbs and rely solely on the main formula.
Fourth, if using the main formula and pain persists, dissolve Frankincense (Boswelliae Resina) and Myrrh (Myrrha) in wine over fire until melted, then use this wine to mix the medicine and apply hot to stop pain.
Fifth, for Liuzhu causing tendon stiffness, add Frankincense to this formula for topical application, as it has the property of extending tendons.
Sixth, if red flesh protrudes from the sore mouth, there are three causes: water exposure, wind exposure, or post-incision eversion. Use this formula with a small amount of Pinellia to dispel wind, mixed with ginger juice and wine. Cases that do not resolve are likely due to quacks pressing too hard to expulse pus cores and cooling the skin with cold medicines. Applying hot medicines here would worsen ulceration. There is a secret formula for this: (Use Alum (Alumen) and Calcined Alum (Alumen Ustums) with Glauber's Salt (Natrii Sulfas) ground into powder for application; follow with Sulfur (Sulfur) powder; externally take Rongwei Jia Duijin Yin and apply Chonghe Gao.)
Seventh, if the disease heat is intense, do not immediately use cold medicines. Intense heat causes qi and blood congestion; strong cold prevents complete resolution and causes coagulation. Therefore, use half warm and half cold. Blood moves with warmth and disperses with coolness. Use this formula plus Duiting Hongbao Dan, mixed with scallion decoction for application.
Eighth, this formula is the premier remedy for Back Carbuncle (Fabei) and Liuzhu. Scholars should master its flexible application, ensuring interior and exterior correspondence, bringing the disease under control. However, severe Back Carbuncles determine life and death; only this formula is stable and reliable throughout the course, with no risk of deterioration. Mild cases can be treated by folk practitioners, but risks of complications exist. This is because yin-channel affections are beyond their scope. Unlike this formula, which treats both yin and yang, achieving miraculous results akin to creation itself. As for Liuzhu, although rarely fatal, 90% result in disability. Disability lingers, leading to death. Even if cured after six months to a year, it is rare, and the patient remains weak. Only my immortal formula works quickly and reliably, truly reviving the dying, beyond words.
Liuzhu is residual toxin from Cold Damage (Shanghan). If the exterior pathogen is not fully resolved, residual toxin lodges in meridians, causing uneven qi and blood, resulting in Hot Liuzhu. Doctors can cure hot types easily; they are rare. If exterior release was excessive, depleting qi and blood, residual toxin enters the interstitial spaces (Couli). Depending on whether Couli are loose or tight, it becomes Cold Liuzhu. Doctors find cold types difficult to treat; they are common. Thus, unresolved exterior pathogens in Cold Damage are not just hot syndromes; residual toxins often manifest as cold syndromes, originating from Kidney Deficiency, leading to Bone Abscess (Guju). Cold causes further qi stagnation and blood accumulation, resulting in swelling but no pus. If doctors prescribe cold formulas, it is "cold upon cold," killing yin with yin, leading to necrotic flesh and bone infection, becoming disability. Thus, Bone Abscess is the failed stage of Liuzhu. "Liu" means movement; "Zhu" means staying. Qi moves but stagnates, so blood stays and coagulates. Qi is Yang, Blood is Yin. Yang moves, so Yin follows; Qi circulates, so Blood flows. I can move Liuzhu elsewhere to disperse it because of its mobility. Since Yang moves, Yin cannot stay alone. Hence, using Angelica Pubescens Root to guide it, as it agitates qi and blood. One movement harmonizes yin and yang, preventing pus formation and dispersing it at the new location.
If Liuzhu occurs in critical areas like back, shoulders, waist, or legs, apply this formula thickly. Then, use only Angelica Pubescens Root powder mixed with wine, applied hot along a path. At the end of the path, use Yulong Gao to lure the toxin. This is the "moving method," directing qi and blood to non-critical areas to form pus or disperse. If pus forms and cannot be drawn down, urgently use this formula to extract toxins and prevent bone abscess. If quacks used cold medicines or needles/knives causing bone abscess, drugs alone won't work; wait for dead bone to exit. If afraid to use needles/knives, use Yulong Gao (method described later). If central bone exits unmanageably, lateral bone can be managed. One formula uses Angelica Dahurica and Sophora Root Bark mixed with wine to internally resolve early carbuncles, named Yisheng Gao. Another formula uses Red Peony Root, Mula, and Sophora Root Bark as a binding agent, named Sansheng Gao. One formula treats adults and children who accidentally cut their tongues with knives, leaving them hanging but not severed. Wrap the tongue in soft chicken egg white membrane. Apply Poxue Dan mixed with honey to the root to stop bleeding. Mix honey and wax appropriately, blend with the main formula, and apply on the wax-coated membrane (thin and soft to penetrate). If it dissolves in the mouth, reapply frequently. After three days, the tongue reconnects; remove the membrane, continue applying honey-wax mixture. Seven days for full recovery. Students should learn flexibility; skill lies not just in transmission. If no rapid effect, combine with trauma medicines for better results.
One: For swelling not yet suppurated, do not immediately apply Hongbao Dan to the head, as cold medicines may freeze blood, preventing pus formation and causing rot. Use this formula instead. If it doesn't resolve and you want pus to form, apply Yulong Gao to the head to dry it, then place this formula underneath, surrounding with Hongbao Dan to intercept fresh blood flow. If not severely frozen by cold medicines, skip this formula under Yulong Gao and just surround with Hongbao Dan.
One: For saving damaged conditions where Yulong Gao is unsuitable, use this formula alone for safety and patient comfort.
One: For early Back Carbuncle not yet formed, use Sophora Root Bark powder mixed with wine to bind tightly, naturally shrinking it. No internal medicine needed; drink Zhamu Decoction, a good remedy for the poor.
One: Add two-thirds amount of Pinellia and Aconite to this formula, mix with hot wine, and apply to various carbuncles to induce painless suppuration. If using only Yulong Gao, ensure it is bound by Hongbao Dan; this method is excellent.
One: For dog bites, use Sophora Root Bark alone, coat the wound with brown sugar, use Jindan to reduce swelling, chew apricot kernels, and place in mouth to detoxify.
One: Method: Add Pinellia and Aconite, half this formula and half those two, mix with hot wine, apply to treat chronic injuries, very effective.
One: For children's soft boils, add Junjiang to this formula, mix with wine. If applied at onset, it resolves before suppuration. If applied at onset with Sophora Root Bark and Mula mixed with wine, it will definitely resolve; do not use Hongbao Dan.
One: Ju (Carbuncle) is Heart Fire-Toxin, appearing on the five centers (palms and soles), unbearable pain, blister-like with red blood. Though small externally, deep heart-toxin is hard to treat; palm/sole cases are curable. Treat early; delay allows rotting, making even immortals helpless. For palm cases, apply Hongbao Dan around the palm to block blood, then use Chonghe Gao on the palm center to finish. For sole cases, apply Hongbao Dan around the ankle and malleolus (1-2 cun), then use Chonghe Gao to finish.
Shengong San: Specifically treats Back Carbuncle, all Ding toxins, and Scrofula sores, whether formed or not. Effects are indescribable.
Chuan Wutou (Processed, skin and tip removed), Chuan Huangbai (Roasted, rough bark removed).
Grind both into fine powder, equal parts. Mix with saliva (child's or adult's, or mouthwash if insufficient) into a paste. For early Back Carbuncle/Sore, apply to affected area leaving the head open. When dry, keep moist with rice washing water, change once daily. For formed, severe, impending ulceration, boil Sophora Branches and Mugwort Leaves, warm, clean sore, wipe pus/blood with silk, lubricate with sesame oil, cut cotton paper to size, leave head open, paste, apply medicine on paper. When dry, re-moisten with rice water, change daily. Let nature take its course; do not squeeze pus. If pain stops and heat appears after application, healing begins; new flesh grows, necrotic flesh falls off. If necrotic flesh doesn't fall, cut it; needles are strictly forbidden. Back Carbuncle should not use plaster; dismiss other doctors, drink different medicines. Avoid anger, sex, labor, mourning, bad constitution, alcohol. Diet: avoid alcohol, lamb, chicken, fish, meat, melons, eggplants, ginger, spicy foods. If swelling recurs due to anger, treat as before. For Neck Carbuncle and Brain Carbuncle, do not wash off old medicine; add gradually to avoid disturbing the sore and inviting wind.
