If a person dies without knowing (the cause), (one may use) formulas such as Blood-Nourishing Decoction or Shixuan San. For any fracture or injury, this formula is commonly used; one can remove Akebiae Caulis (Mutong, 木通) and rename it He Shou Wu San, because Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Heshouwu, 何首乌) can support the blood. If injured by a blade, presenting with tidal fever, facial swelling, and panting, this is a Broken Wind syndrome; one may take Suoxue San, Puerariae Decoction (Gegen Tang, 葛根汤) for several doses, or a diaphoretic decoction prepared with ginger and scallion, or Baidu San for three to four doses. Apply external paste medications according to the principles of treatment; there will be no case that does not heal. For chronic lower back pain lasting a year, add Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizome (Bixie, 萆薢) and Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo, 玄胡索), decocted in wine. For Hong Kong Foot (podagra/foot swelling), add Areca Seed (Binglang, 槟榔), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua, 木瓜), and Manis Squama (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲), decocted in water.
Phlegm deviating from its normal pathway is unrecognized by most people; since the transmission by Immortals, only my school understands it. Phlegm in the human body lubricates the whole body, just as fish have mucus. However, when phlegm resides in the stomach, if it remains still, there is no disease; if it moves, hundreds of diseases arise. These include panting, coughing, vomiting, dizziness, headache, eye pain, general stiffness, and bi-syndrome pain in bone joints. All these are newly acquired external phlegm, formed by the coagulation of deteriorated and turbid Qi and Blood. Why? When Zang-Fu Qi rebels, stagnation generates phlegm; when sweating should occur but does not, accumulation generates phlegm; excessive dietary injury causes Jin-Ye (body fluids) to fail to circulate, gathering to form phlegm. Its normal pathway extends from the epigastrium to the lung region and exits; when it deviates, it flows from the epigastrium into the muscles and skin/hair. The Spleen governs muscles, and the Lung governs skin/hair. Therefore, wherever there is clustering, swelling, and hardness in the chest, back, head, neck, axilla, groin, waist, legs, hands, or feet—whether painful or painless—with no blood rush upon pressure, although perhaps slightly red, it is pale, cool, and hard as stone. Puncturing yields no pus, but thin blood, clear fluid, or milky fluid; there may be necrotic tissue resembling torn cotton, or scrofula-like nodules between skin and muscle, floating like an egg in water, movable, soft and pliable, not hard. Puncturing yields no pus or blood; flesh protrudes from the needle wound; one feels a solid obstruction of phlegm in the throat, alternating chills and fever. These are all symptoms. Urgently add Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing, 南星) and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏) to this formula to treat internally, and apply Yulong hot medicine externally to draw out toxicity. Formation of pus and rupture is favorable. For mild cases without pus, spontaneous internal resolution must occur. If heat is extreme and phlegm is congested, use Kongxian Dan (Kudzu Root and Datura Seed Pill). (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui (Gansui, 甘遂), Semen Sinapis Albae (Baijiezi, 白芥子), and Radix Euphorbiae Kansui (Zidaji, 紫大戟) in equal parts, powdered, made into pills with rice paste.) If the whole body is swollen and hard, with masses as large as cups or bowls, arising at critical points of the throat and neck, it is particularly difficult to treat. If Blood and Qi are harmonious and smooth, naturally there are no other diseases. If Qi movement is unsmooth, Blood transforms into phlegm; if phlegm again deviates, then Blood and Qi deteriorate, unable to form pus, only becoming swollen and hard; this is the inevitable principle. This syndrome has less Yang and more Yin. Medication should be prescribed according to symptoms to restore Yang and generate Qi. Besides Blood-nourishing and Kongxian Dan, apply external methods to raise the condition, guiding the Qi and Blood of the whole body to dissipate cold clumps. If unfortunately the swelling does not subside, is not painful, nor hot, and the constitution is strong with no other symptoms, and the fleshy mass is indistinguishable from healthy flesh, this is another syndrome; one must absolutely not lightly use needles or knives to harm oneself. If folk healers previously used acupuncture, causing yin-rotting of the flesh, or used toxic drugs to cauterize, causing aversion to cold and high fever, the method should be to smooth Qi and Blood. Add Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) to this formula to dispel cold pathogens, and use astringent crust-forming medicines to soothe it, making it merely a wart. If the disease spontaneously becomes foul-smelling and ulcerated, knife surgery is unavoidable, but there are excellent remedies to replace the knife; do not leak them lightly. (These are Alum (Baifan, 白矾), Calcined Alum (Kufan, 枯矾), and Mirabilite (Puxiao, 朴硝) in powder applied externally.) For intra-abdominal abscesses, it is suitable to alternate Shixuan San with this formula, adding Honeysuckle Stem (Jindengteng, 忍冬藤); this herb best treats internal abscesses. One must examine deficiency and excess: tonify with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) for deficiency, or purge with Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) for excess. If one does not understand deficiency and excess, this formula can still smooth Qi and Blood, and Shixuan San can internally tonify, avoiding other changes. As for early-stage Lung Abscess, where diet is hindered and there is slight pain in the chest and diaphragm, this is this syndrome. Urgently observe the pulse and examine deficiency and excess. For deficiency, use this formula added with Fuzi, varying appropriately; if it recurs slightly, use Shixuan San to internally tonify, and it will spontaneously dissipate. For excess, use this formula added with a little Dahuang to slightly purge, allowing toxic vapors to descend and disperse, which is excellent, because the Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior related. If an internal abscess has formed, use Haishang Fang combined with this formula, adding and subtracting as appropriate. Panting, coughing, and expectoration of pus and blood indicate Lung Abscess. Pus in stool exiting from the umbilicus indicates Abdominal Abscess. Jindengteng and Licorice Knot (Gancao Jie, 甘草节) decocted in wine are excellent.
Longhu Jiaojia San (Dragon-Tiger Intersecting Powder): Treats Back Carbuncle and Ulcer, Brain Eruption, Temple Eruption, Beard Eruption, also treats Brain Deficiency Dizziness and Wind-Dampness syndromes.
Preparation Method:
Aucklandiae Radix (Nanmuxiang, 南木香) (chopped, dried over a pot lined with paper, ground to fine powder)
Papaveris Pericarpium (Yangsuke, 罂粟壳) (remove top and pith fibers, chopped, dried, ground to fine powder)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (wrapped in wet paper, roasted, dried, ground to fine powder)
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Wubaizhi, 吴白芷) (wrapped in flour, roasted, flour removed, dried, ground to fine powder)
Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) (wrapped in wet paper, roasted, dried, ground to fine powder)
Store each powder separately. Adjust usage based on the sore.
Modification Method:
If the sore is red, swollen, hot, and severe, first take Rushen Tuoli San (Miraculous Interior-Supporting Powder) for one dose, lie down, cover, and induce slight sweating. If the red halo is large, swelling is high, and the sore head resembles broken white rice pus points, administer Jiaojia San for one dose: Aucklandiae Radix (4 fen), Papaveris Pericarpium (2 qian 2 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (6 fen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (1 qian 4 fen), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (1 qian 5 fen). Combine as one dose. Use 70% water and 30% raw white wine, totaling one bowl. Decoct in a silver vessel to 80% volume; if no silver vessel, new porcelain is acceptable; do not use old copper or iron vessels. Near charcoal fire, boil five to seven times. Filter through wet fine silk, wringing dry, removing dregs. Take after meals, pressing with dry salted vegetables; apply dregs around the sore, wrapping with a silk handkerchief. If nausea and vomiting occur, take Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder) for one dose to stop vomiting, then take the previous medicine. If the chest and abdomen are distended, or urination and defecation are obstructed, take Danggui Lianqiao San (Angelica and Forsythia Powder) for one dose, inducing bowel movement five to seven times, then replenish正气 (Zheng Qi) with warm rice porridge soup. If the sore has ulcerated and pusified, with no chills or fever, only rotting and pain, use Aucklandiae Radix (3 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (6 qian), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (1 qian 5 fen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (1 qian 4 fen), Papaveris Pericarpium (2 qian). Use half water and half wine, decoct to 80% volume. If the red halo turns white, it is good; if the redness of the sore persists, it is not resolved. If purple-black, it is slightly better. If the red halo does not recede, take one dose of medicine every evening, consuming four to five doses of Jiaojia San, and one dose of Danggui Lianqiao San. To promote discharge, add Dahuang. If there is only heat without abdominal distension, do not use Dahuang. If the sore is healing but necrotic flesh does not shed, prick the skin with a needle to allow pus to exit, wash with decoction of Alternanthera Philoxeroides Root (Shuihonghua Gen, 水红花根), sprinkle Shengji San (Flesh-Generating Powder), wash once daily. Following this method ensures efficacy. Cases with maggots are difficult to treat. Strictly avoid sour, spicy, soy sauce, wheat products, "fa" foods (trigger foods), and cold/raw items.
Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder): Indications same as Jiaojia San above.
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Roasted, 1 qian)
Vigna Radiata Semen (Stir-fried, 2 qian)
Cinnabaris (Ground, water-washed, filtered, 1 qian)
