[Zhizi (Corylus heterophylla)]
Taste: sour, sweet. Nature: slightly warm. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: primarily warms the middle jiao, directs qi downward, promotes digestion, eliminates acid fluid in the heart region, removes foul odor, and repels clothes moths. Grows in northern regions; resembles Shanzha (Crataegus fruit) but is smaller. (Added now)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Chen Shiliang: It induces toxic heat, causes constipation of the large and small intestines, and gathers phlegm turbidity in the chest. It should not be eaten in excess, as it astringes the blood vessels. Ri Hua Zi states: It relieves irritability and thirst, and regulates qi.
Tu Jing records: The origin province was not noted in old texts; currently, it is found in Guan and Shaan regions, with those from Shayuan being superior. Its fruit is generally similar to Shanzha, but the skin is thinner and hairier, with an especially sweet taste. It treats food accumulation in the chest and diaphragm, removes acid fluid, directs qi downward, and stops thirst. When wanting to sleep, eating one or two pieces before bed is suitable, whether raw or cooked. Shanzha also treats cholera with muscle cramps; drinking its boiled juice can rival Mu Gua (Chaenomeles fruit). Regular consumption also removes acid and phlegm from the heart region. The peel, when pounded into powder and applied to sores, stops yellow exudate. When the fruit is newly ripe, its aroma is fragrant; people place it in clothing chests to scent garments.
Chen Cangqi states: The tree resembles Lin Qin (Malus asiatica), with white-green flowers.
Yan Yi records: When eating Zhizi, the floating hairs must be thoroughly removed, otherwise it damages the lungs. The flowers are also fragrant and white. Among all fruits, this one is most prone to insect infestation, rarely escaping damage. Tu Jing says, "Eat one or two pieces before sleeping." This suggests that excessive consumption may cause epigastric fullness and obstruction.
[Lingshuang Shang Guo]
Taste: sweet. Nature: neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: primarily tonifies qi and strength, relaxes the stomach and intestines, prevents hunger, and strengthens walking ability. Grows in the valleys of Liaodong. The tree is about one zhang high; the seeds resemble small chestnuts. They were used as rations by armies on campaign and are also found in the Central Plains. Zheng Xuan’s commentary on the Book of Rites states: Zhizi resembles chestnuts but is smaller, and is very common in the markets of Guanzhong. (Added now)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully cite Ri Hua Zi: Xinluo Zhizi is plump and white; consuming it stops hunger, and its effect on regulating the middle jiao and opening the appetite is highly effective.
The content of Tu Jing has been recorded under the entry for Li (Chestnut).
Thirteen additional types recorded by Chen Cangqi.
