Nature and flavor: Slightly warm. Indications: Cough, wu lin (five types of stranguria), obstruction of urination and defecation, pediatric convulsive epilepsy, and hemostasis. For epistaxis (nosebleed), burning the hair into ash and blowing it into the nasal cavity stops bleeding immediately.
Tao Hongjing stated: This is merely ordinary human hair; its therapeutic properties are similar to those of fa ji (hair bun). The annotation in *Tang Bencao* notes: Ash from disordered hair treats zhuan bao (cystocele causing urinary retention), urinary obstruction, dysentery with red and white discharge, yin yi (dysphagia/obstruction in throat and chest), epistaxis, carbuncles and swellings, hu niao la (a skin condition or symptom resembling fox urine irritation), shi zhu (chronic consumptive infectious disease), ding zhong (malignant furuncle), gu ju (bone abscess), and various sores. Ancient formulas also utilized it. Ministers Yu Xi et al., according to *Yao Xing Lun*, stated: Disordered hair, when used as a drug, has a bitter taste. It can resolve blood stasis, treat guan ge (blockage preventing upper and lower communication, leading to inability to urinate or defecate), and promote the flow of water passages.
*Waitai Miyao* treats hu luan (cholera-like syndrome) with restlessness and irritability. Burn disordered hair to the size of a chicken egg, mix with three sheng of salt water, and take orally; if vomiting occurs, administer again. *Qianjin Fang* treats pediatric convulsive crying. Another formula: Treats spontaneous bleeding without obvious cause. Burn disordered hair and fingernails into ash, take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* treats huang dan (jaundice). Take a qian bi (coin-sized measure), taken three times daily. Secret Formula. Another formula: Treats nv lao dan (jaundice caused by sexual exhaustion), characterized by yellowing of the body and eyes, fever with aversion to cold, and fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen. Take a piece of disordered ash the size of a chicken egg and half jin of pig fat, decoct until the fat is consumed, divide into two doses. Empirical Formula: Sun Simiao Xu Da (Name/Title). Boil chicken egg yolks hard-boiled, mix the two substances, and simmer over charcoal fire in a clay pot. Initially dry, after a short while the hair chars, yielding liquid. Collect this liquid into a porcelain cup until exhausted. Apply this liquid to hot sores, then dust with ku shen fen (Sophora flavescens powder). When I gave birth in Langzhou, I developed hot sores during the puerperium, located between the buttocks and thighs. Initial application of other medicines was ineffective; the condition worsened and spread to half the body. Symptoms were severe, with day-and-night crying and howling, refusal to nurse or sleep. Consulting the Materia Medica, I found an entry for hair stating: Decoct with chicken egg yolk until dissolved into water, treating pediatric convulsive heat. The annotation states: Currently, midwives prepare "Jizi Jian" for children, simmering hair mixed with ingredients for a long time to obtain juice, which children drink to dispel phlegm-heat and treat myriad ailments. Whenever using hair, always select loose hair from combing. Checking the entry for eggs, it states: Treats fire burns. Therefore, I used it and it proved effective. Thereafter, I used it, and all cases healed. Mei Shi Fang: Treats epistaxis with dizziness and fainting. Burn disordered hair, grind finely, take one fang cun bi with water, and shortly after, blow into the nose. *Doumen Fang*: Treats han xue (sweating blood). Use one zi weight of hair ash, blow into the nose to stop bleeding. *Jianyao Jizhong Fang*: Treats pediatric chong she (double tongue) nearing death. Grind disordered hair ash finely, apply half qian under the tongue. Use continuously day and night. Yao Shi treats accidental swallowing of hair during eating, which wraps around the throat and cannot be expelled. Take one's own head hair, burn to ash, take one qian bi, mix with water. Another formula: Treats obstruction of urination and defecation. Take three finger-pinches of disordered hair ash, throw into half sheng of water, take once. *Sun Taizhen* agrees. *Zimu Milu*: Treats shi zhu. Burn disordered hair to the size of a chicken egg, grind to powder, take with water to cure. Another formula: Treats pediatric convulsions with sores at the corners of the mouth. Mix disordered hair with pig fat and apply. Another formula: Treats pediatric variola (smallpox) and pea pox. Grind disordered hair ash to powder, take one fang cun bi with water. *Fuqi Jingyi Fang*: Liu Jun'an takes one qian bi, taken with wine. Highly effective for sores that fail to heal for a long time; burn to ash but retain some medicinal nature. Old Tang said: Collect one's own loose hair, wash clean, dry, add fifty peppercorns per liang, seal with mud, place in furnace, roast over high fire until resembling black dregs, grind finely. Take one qian bi with wine; promotes growth of black beard and hair. *Yanyi* details this under the entry for fa ji.
