(Yin Yi, also pronounced Ti) Fish
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Non-toxic. Indications: Treats various diseases.
Tao Hongjing states: This is the (Ti) fish. Nowadays, people generally pronounce it as "Ci", which refers to the (Nai Jian Qie) fish. It is used for cooking and is said to have tonifying effects.
There are other fish similar to it but larger in size; there is also the (Wu Hui Qie) fish, which is similar, yellow in color, delicious, and beneficial to humans. However, those with red eyes, red whiskers, no gills, or those eaten together with deer meat, will cause death if consumed. There is also a "human fish" that resembles this one but has four feet, makes sounds like a child, and can treat Jia masses (abdominal lumps) when eaten. Its grease does not diminish when burned; it was used in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang at Mount Li, known as human grease. Jingzhou, Linju, and Qingxi areas produce the most of this fish. The *Tang Bencao* annotation states: This fish is also named [Name Omitted] fish and [Name Omitted] fish. It treats water swelling and promotes urination. Chen Yuxi et al., according to the Shu Ben Tu Jing, state: There are three types. Those with large mouths and bellies are named (Hu Yin), those with green backs and small mouths are named [Name Omitted], and those with small mouths, yellow backs, and white bellies are named [Name Omitted], also known as pufferfish. These three types are edible, delicious, and tonifying. Chen Shiliang states: This fish is warm in nature.
The *Tu Jing* states: The (Yin Yi, also Ti) fish, whose origin province was not recorded in old texts, is now abundant in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. It has a square head, large mouth, dark green-black back, no scales, and produces much mucus. There are three varieties. Tao Hongjing says: It is the (Ti) fish. It is the (Nai Jian Qie) fish. There is also the (Hu Yin) fish, similar but larger. The (Wu Hui Qie) fish is also similar, yellow in color and delicious. Although these three types share similar morphology and properties, they differ slightly in size. [Name Omitted] is also called [Name Omitted]. The *Book of Songs · Xiao Ya* states: "Fish lie in the trap, Fang and Sha." The Commentary explains: "Trap refers to a curved weir." The *Erya · Shi Yu* states: "[Name Omitted], [Name Omitted]." Guo Pu's annotation states: Now called forehead-white fish. [Name Omitted] is also known as [Name Omitted]; in Jiangdong, [Name Omitted] is commonly called [Name Omitted]. Nowadays, it is widely eaten in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, but should not be eaten with beef liver, as it causes wind disorders and frequent choking. Mucus treats Sanxiao (wasting-thirst syndrome). Take fresh fish mucus, mix with Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) powder, make into pills, and take 5-7 pills after meals with dried plum (Wumei) decoction; thirst is instantly relieved. [Name Omitted] should not be eaten in any season, nor with wild boar meat, as it causes vomiting and diarrhea. [Name Omitted], called [Name Omitted] fish by people in Qin, can aggravate chronic diseases; it should not be eaten with wild pheasant or wild boar meat, as it causes leprosy-like sores. Generally, these three types of fish are cold in nature and toxic, and are not considered fine food.
Dietary Therapy: [Name Omitted] and [Name Omitted] are roughly similar. They treat various deficiencies and provide tonification. They have no scales, are toxic, and should not be eaten in excess. Those with red eyes and red whiskers are fatal.
*Qianjin Yi Fang*: For poisoning from thorn injuries, burn fish eyes to ash, mix with water, and apply topically.
*Yanyi* states: [Name Omitted] fish resembles an otter slightly, has four feet, a heavy hanging belly like a sac, and a slightly purple body. Once dissected, it contained three small crabs, and another four...
