(The image is smooth and fluid in its coming and going, like a pearl rolling on a plate, neither advancing nor retreating.)
The Slippery Pulse (Hua Mai) belongs to Yang; when Yuan Qi (Original Qi) declines, this pulse appears. It arises from the generation of phlegm causing myriad diseases or from food stagnation bringing disaster. (Floating and slippery indicates wind-phlegm; slippery and rapid indicates phlegm-fire; short and slippery indicates retained food.) Upward it manifests as vomiting and regurgitation; downward it accumulates blood stasis.
In women, if the pulse is harmonious and slippery, pregnancy is certain. (When the Du vessel's pulse is slippery in women, combined with blood heat and irregular menstruation, a harmonious and slippery pulse indicates conception. This verse generally discusses diseases associated with the Slippery Pulse.)
Slipperiness at the Cun position (distal) indicates phlegm in the diaphragm causing vomiting (Right Cun disease); palpitations and tongue stiffness due to heat (Left Cun disease); retention of food and liver-spleen heat at the Guan position (middle) (Left Guan: liver heat causing head and eye disorders; Right Guan: spleen heat causing bad breath, vomiting, and indigestion). For thirst, dysentery, and stranguria, observe the Chi position (proximal) (same for both sides). This verse generally discusses diseases associated with the Slippery Pulse on both hands.
(The image is deficient, thin, and slow, with extreme difficulty in movement. It stops occasionally and then returns, irregular in rhythm, sometimes every third or fifth beat.)
The Choppy Pulse (Se Mai) originates from blood deficiency or essence injury. It is seen in retrograde vomiting, collapse of Yang with profuse sweating like rain, bi-syndrome caused by cold-damp invading the Ying level, or blood stasis. In women, it indicates either non-pregnancy or amenorrhea. (A choppy pulse at the Left Chi position in women indicates blood deficiency if not pregnant, or fetal disease/bleeding if pregnant. This verse generally discusses diseases associated with the Choppy Pulse.)
Choppiness at the Left Cun position indicates heart deficiency pain and disharmony of Ying and Wei levels (Left Cun reflects deficiency and exhaustion of Heart and Lung, discomfort, and cold qi causing heart pain; Right Cun reflects disharmony of Ying and Wei, cold obstruction in the Upper Jiao, shortness of breath, and arm soreness). If found at the Guan position, it indicates spleen weakness (Right Guan choppy: spleen weakness leading to anorexia, stomach cold causing frequent vomiting) and liver deficiency (Left Guan weak: liver deficiency with dispersed blood, rib distension and fullness, body pain). At the Left Chi position, it indicates essence injury accompanied by hernia; at the Right Chi position, it indicates cold in the lower abdomen and shins (often accompanied by constipation and insufficient body fluids). This verse generally discusses diseases associated with the Choppy Pulse on both hands.
(The position one division anterior to the Guan position on the left hand is Renying.)
Renying observes exterior conditions and belongs to Fu-Yang (Renying governs external contraction of the Six Evils, belonging to the exterior, Fu organs, and Yang). Wind presents as floating, summerheat as weak, tightness indicates cold injury (e.g., a floating Renying pulse indicates wind injury; other Six Evils follow this pattern). Dampness presents as deep and fine, while heat/fire presents as rapid (heat causes deficient rapidity, fire causes surging rapidity). Cold causing clear/cold extremities is treated well with exterior-dispersing methods (Renying also governs diseases of the four limbs).
