Great illnesses refer to conditions such as wind-stroke (Zhongfeng), cold damage (Shanghan), heat-labor (Relao), and warm malaria (Wenmalaria). After these illnesses, blood and qi are depleted, and the zang-fu organs are not yet harmonized, leading to deficiency and insufficiency. Due to this deficiency and insufficiency, the meridians become susceptible to pathogenic factors; depending on where they invade, various diseases may develop.
After a great illness, if one is again attacked by wind pathogens, yang qi dissipates, resulting in spontaneous sweating due to deficiency. Excessive sweating leads to loss of yang (Yang Wang), causing exhaustion of body fluids (Jinye) and making the person emaciated.
If a person's flesh is not firm, with coarse texture and loose skin, it indicates that the couli (pores and interstitial spaces) are sparse. Such individuals are prone to wind invasion. When wind enters the yang aspect, and accompanied by shortness of breath, dry mouth and thirst, feeling hot like fire when near clothing, profuse sweating like rain during meals, flaccidity of bone joints, and reluctance to care for oneself, this is called "Leakage Wind" (Loufeng), caused by drinking alcohol while exposed to wind.
In cases of deficiency-labor injury, both blood and qi are deficient. If additionally attacked by cold pathogens, the qi of the zang-fu organs fails to circulate outward, stagnating internally, thus causing epigastric and abdominal fullness and obstruction.
Deficiency-labor refers to insufficient organ qi, which, when combined with wind pathogen invasion, leads to conflict between evil and righteous qi, and clashing of cold and heat, resulting in pain in both the heart and abdomen. In persons injured by labor, the five zang organs are unsettled, and the six fu organs are unregulated. The stomach is the sea of water and grain; now being weak and invaded by cold, it cannot process food and drink, causing rebellious qi and vomiting.
Coughing in deficiency-labor occurs because the qi of the zang-fu organs is declining, and pathogens have damaged the lungs. If prolonged, it causes slight pain in the chest and back, or palpitations and irritability, or wheezing and upward rushing of qi, or coughing with hemoptysis. These are all coughs originating from the zang-fu organs. However, the lungs govern qi, and the movement of qi nourishes the zang-fu organs; therefore, coughing pathogens ultimately converge in the lungs.
In persons injured by labor, both yin and yang are deficient, the meridians and vessels are obstructed, and blood and qi circulation is impaired. If wind pathogens clash with righteous qi, cold causes body pain, and heat causes skin itching.
Upon pulse diagnosis, if the tight pulse (Jin) and soggy pulse (Ru) interact, it primarily indicates joint pain. Treatments involving decoctions, moxibustion/heat application, acupuncture, and stone therapy have separate specific formulas. Nourishing and guiding methods are attached below.
The *Regimen Manual · Guiding Methods* states: Extend both hands' fingers upward, palms facing south, rotating towards the four directions. Bend elbows and move up and down to the limit, performing seven sets of four repetitions. Then release hands to hang downward, shake twice backwards, and gently disperse qi for two sets of seven repetitions. This removes internal body, arm, and rib pain and stuffiness. Gradual practice can permanently eliminate it.
It also states: Sit upright, grasp the five toes of both feet with both hands, stretch to the extreme, lower the head, and hold for nine breath cycles. This treats neck, spine, waist, and leg pain, as well as labor diseases.
It also states: Lie supine, extend both big toes to the right, straighten both arms beside the body, inhale through the nose for seven breath cycles. This removes bone pain.
It also states: Sit upright, extend the waist, raise the right hand, palm facing up, retract the left arm, covering the left hand. Inhale through the nose to the limit for seven breath cycles, pausing slightly with the left hand between breaths. This removes bilateral arm and back pain.
It also states: Kneel in the "Hu" style, bend body downward, head five inches from the ground, then lift head, face upward, simultaneously withdraw both hands. First, extend the left hand long forward in front of the body, and one hand long backward behind the body, exerting force to the limit for two sets of seven repetitions. Do the same for the other side. This removes disharmony of yin and yang in arm bones, spine, and tendons, and painful stuffiness.
It also states: Sit on one foot, place the other foot horizontally under the knee to press; press one hand on the upper knee downward urgently; extend the other hand backward into position, tilt head forward, coordinate both hands to take position, press and shake for two sets of seven repetitions. Alternate sides. This removes sluggish blood flow in thighs, chest, neck, and armpits, and cramping pain/stuffiness. Kneel stably with both feet, then draw one foot forward to the extreme, head and face passing the tips of the two front toes, moving up and down for three sets of seven repetitions. Alternate feet. This removes pain/stuffiness/disharmony in arms, waist, back, thighs, and inner knees, regulating qi and fluids of the five zang and six fu organs. Bend one foot forward so the bladder area rests on the knee, extend the other foot backward to the limit, tense toes, extend both hands backward, shape resembling a flying immortal in void, head raised, take position simultaneously for two sets of seven repetitions, shift feet left/right by one cun, removing whole-body disharmony.
It also states: Stretch both legs long, toes pointing up; stretch both hands long, palms facing each other, fingers straight; arch head and stiffen spine, exerting force to the limit simultaneously; complete three sets of three repetitions. Move feet apart one chi, keep hands in place, palms outward for seven repetitions. After a moment, move feet two chi, press hands down to the mat, exerting force to the limit, three sets of three repetitions. This removes internal tendon/joint labor-deficiency and bone marrow pain/stuffiness throughout the body. Stretch both legs toward body corners, grasp both big toes with both hands, squeeze tightly without force, directing heart qi to the feet, exerting force/stretching hands and feet simultaneously to the limit, three sets of seven repetitions. This removes arm and waist pain. [Note: The final phrase regarding Jiexi acupoint and qi depletion seems to be a cautionary note or fragment].
