Chronic abdominal distension arises from wind-cold pathogenic factors remaining in the abdomen without dissipating, clashing with the Zang-Fu organs. Due to Spleen deficiency, distension occurs. If the distension persists, it leads to stagnation and accumulation of fluids, manifesting intermittently as chronic distension. Untreated chronic distension impairs digestion, leading to dysentery. This is because the Spleen and Stomach are exterior-interior pairs; the Spleen governs the transformation and transportation of food and fluids, while the Stomach is the sea of food and fluids. Spleen deficiency allows cold pathogenic factors to accumulate over time, weakening Spleen Qi, thus impairing digestion. Furthermore, cold shifts into the Large Intestine, which is the pathway for waste products. Being deficient and invaded by cold, it transforms into dysentery.
Heart and abdominal pain results from weakness of the Zang-Fu organs, allowing wind-cold pathogens to lodge within. When pathogenic factors attack, they clash with healthy Qi. Ascending to the Heart causes heart pain; descending to the Abdomen causes abdominal pain. Mutual attacking between upper and lower regions results in severe cramping pain in the heart and abdomen, with difficulty breathing.
Palpation reveals that the pulse at the Cun Kou (Inch Position) before the Ren Ying (Human Welcome) point on the left hand belongs to the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin. A deep pulse indicates Yin; Yin deficiency manifests as painful heart and abdomen, difficulty speaking, a sensation of cold in the Heart, and distress in the heart and abdomen with impaired respiration. A fine and small pulse indicates survival (good prognosis), whereas a large, firm, and rapid pulse indicates death (poor prognosis). For heart and abdominal pain, a deep, fine, and small pulse indicates survival, while a floating, large, and rapid pulse indicates death. Treatments involving decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy have separate specific formulas. Methods of nourishment and Daoyin (guiding and pulling exercises) are attached hereafter.
The "Health Preservation Formulas · Daoyin Method" states: Walk the Great Path, constantly measuring the sun, moon, and stars. Maintain purity and clarity at cockcrow, settle the body for sleep, rinse the mouth and swallow saliva three times. Harmonize the Five Viscera, eliminate gu worms (parasites), treat heart and abdominal pain, and promote longevity.
Chronic heart and abdominal pain arises when cold pathogens lodge between the Zang-Fu organs, clashing with Blood and Qi. Following the movement of Qi up and down, they attack the heart and abdomen, causing knotted pain. When Zang Qi is deficient and pathogenic factors are excessive, stagnation forms, occurring at specific times, constituting chronic heart and abdominal pain. However, long-standing heart and abdominal pain involves the aggregation of cold Qi over years. As time passes deeply, it transforms into Cold Hernia (Han Shan).
Mutually pulling pain between the heart and abdomen occurs due to deficiency in both the Foot-Taiyin Meridian and its collaterals, allowing cold pathogenic factors to invade. The Foot-Taiyin is the Spleen Meridian, originating at the tip of the great toe, ascending to connect with the Spleen and link with the Stomach; its branch diverges from the Stomach and ascends to enter the Heart. The meridian enters the Stomach, and the collateral connects to the Heart. When these two vessels are deficient and invaded by pathogens, Healthy Qi clashes with Pathogenic Qi. In the meridians, this causes acute epigastric pain; in the collaterals, it causes acute subcardiac pain. The flow of Qi in the meridians and collaterals, with the clash between pathogenic and healthy Qi in between, results in mutually pulling pain between the heart and abdomen.
Taiyin JueNi (reversal) presents with acute spasms and pulling pain from the heart/abdomen to the lower abdomen.
