(Peng Yongguang's writings are complex and disorganized. Here, the key points are extracted and compiled into this article to provide a method for pulse diagnosis.)
For men, the left-hand pulse is primary, with the Kidney position corresponding to one's own destiny. (Note: For both men and women, the left hand is primary, and the Kidney position corresponds to oneself. However, there is a distinction regarding the "Husband's Position" for women. The assertion that women prioritize the right-hand pulse is incorrect.)
The left pulse governs nobility/status, while the right pulse governs wealth; the left pulse governs internal matters, while the right pulse governs external matters. (For example: temperament is internal, official rank and salary are external; oneself is internal, others are external. Additionally, a Floating pulse [Fu Mai] indicates external matters, while a Deep pulse [Chen Mai] indicates internal matters.)
The two Cun positions govern early life, the two Guan positions govern middle age, and the two Chi positions govern late life.
The Heart pulse governs the righteousness or perversity of temperament, wisdom or foolishness, (governed by deep palpation,) parents, official titles, and also imperial examination success. (Governed by superficial palpation. The same applies to the following sections.)
The Liver pulse governs strategy, authority, loyalty or deceit, imperial examination success, and also official titles. (Wherever the governance of various positions overlaps in meaning, they must be analyzed comprehensively together.)
The Kidney pulse governs lifespan, descendants, and the firmness of will. (The Mingmen [Gate of Life] pulse shares these attributes. If the pulse comes flickering or unstable, the will is not firm.)
The Lung pulse governs integrity and ancestral property. (Whatever is above oneself, such as appreciation by rulers or ministers, promotion by noble patrons, matters of promotion or demotion, are all governed by it. It should be analyzed in conjunction with the Liver pulse.) The Spleen pulse governs brothers, the wife's natal family, wealth and salary, sorrow and joy, and toil and rest. In cases of sorrow, the pulse sinks and depresses; in cases of toil, the pulse is surging and turbid.
The Mingmen [Gate of Life] governs lifespan, servants, and also descendants. The two Chi positions also govern the foundation of ancestral property.
The Cun position should be slightly Floating [Fu], and the Chi position should be slightly Deep [Chen]. The left pulse should be clear, long, even, and slippery [Hua], symbolizing loyalty, uprightness, clarity, and nobility; the right pulse should be slow, surging, even, and slippery [Hua], symbolizing wealth, nobility, broad-mindedness, and harmony. If the pulses in all six positions are floating and deep, even and slippery, with distinct coming and going, forceful, neither choppy [Se] nor scattered [San], neither empty [Kong] nor interrupted [Duan], neither tight [Jin] nor fine [Xi], it is auspicious. A Choppy [Se] pulse is an image of difficulty, distress, and stinginess. An Empty [Kong] or Scattered [San] pulse is an image of emptiness, frivolity, dissipation, and lack of root. An Interrupted [Duan] pulse is an image of unpredictability and insufficiency. A Fine [Xi] pulse is an image of desolation. A Tight [Jin] pulse is an image of rigidity, eccentricity, and isolation. Therefore, Choppy [Se], Fine [Xi], Empty [Kong], and Scattered [San] pulses indicate poverty and low status without occupation; if seen in wealthy or noble individuals, they indicate loss of office and wealth; Tight [Jin] and Fine [Xi] pulses indicate poverty, loneliness, stinginess, and treachery; Interrupted [Duan] pulses indicate deceit and premature death. A Surging [Hong] and Turbid pulse indicates, on the left side, erratic temperament, toil, and turmoil; on the right side, wealth without propriety, isolation without heirs, and also toil. A Sunken/Depressed pulse indicates stagnant Qi, sinister and cruel temperament, depression, and unresolved sorrow; sudden appearance of such a pulse implies loss or penal injury. Weak and sunken Heart and Liver pulses, combined with a Surging and Turbid Lung pulse, indicate mediocrity, cowardice, and corruption; a Fine and short Heart pulse, combined with a Deep and weak Kidney pulse, indicates baseness, lack of ambition, and willingness to sink to low behavior. (It is favorable for servants to have such pulses, as it signifies loyalty to their master. Even and slow Liver and Spleen pulses indicate loyalty to the master.)
If the left-hand pulse is clear and long but urgent and uncomfortable, with small fluctuations, it indicates nobility without wealth, and a harsh, irritable, narrow-minded, and stingy character; if clear, long, even, and slippery [Hua], it indicates broad-mindedness, kindness, and worry-free wealth; if tight, fine, and slippery [Hua], it indicates cunning and deceit.
A Surging and slow left-hand pulse indicates a broad-minded temperament and abundant family resources; if surging and turbid, it indicates dullness, toil, and turmoil.
A clear, long, even, and slippery [Hua] right-hand pulse indicates wealth and love for propriety; if clear, firm, and isolated, it indicates poverty, monastic life, and lack of kinship.
A surging and turbid right-hand pulse indicates wealth without nobility; if surging and tight [Jin], it indicates wealth but stinginess; if surging with signs of choppy [Se], it indicates former wealth followed by poverty.
A String-tight [Xian Xi] Heart pulse, a Sunken Liver pulse, and a String-tight [Xian Jin] Spleen pulse indicate difficult circumstances, depression, and discomfort; accompanied by a Choppy [Se] pulse, it indicates loss of office and wealth; if Scattered [San], it indicates bankruptcy and ruin; isolated and choppy [Se] pulses in the two Chi positions indicate childlessness or loss of children, and desolation of ancestral property; Deep and Slippery [Hua] pulses together indicate numerous and virtuous descendants; Floating and vigorous, even and slippery [Hua] pulses indicate assistance from servants.
If such pulse patterns are consistently perceived, they indicate a fixed destiny for life; if suddenly perceived, they indicate temporary fortune or misfortune. One must observe turbidity within clarity, choppy [Se] qualities within slipperiness [Hua], and gathering within scattering. Ultimately, judgment relies on whether the rising and falling movements are forceful and spirited. By observing the subtle degrees and timing of auspiciousness, inauspiciousness, fortune, and misfortune, and determining them through the generation and restriction cycles of the Four Seasons and Five Elements, one can make a diagnosis.
In women, the Heart and Lungs correspond to the husband. While at home, the Lung pulse is primary; after marriage, the Heart pulse is primary. (Note: The Liver pulse also governs the prominence or obscurity of the husband, i.e., whether one benefits from the husband.)
A Long and slow Liver pulse in women indicates a prosperous husband; if surging and turbid, the husband is prosperous but the woman labors. A String-tight [Xian Jin] Liver pulse and a String-tight [Xian Xi] Heart pulse indicate a sinister temperament, harshness, and lack of grace.
A Surging and slow Spleen pulse indicates abundant food and clothing. An even and slippery [Hua] Heart pulse indicates skill in managing the household. Clear, long, and slow Heart and Liver pulses indicate a husband's honor and nobility; firm, long, and isolated pulses indicate chastity; fine, short, and sunken pulses indicate penal injury or conflict.
Generally speaking, the male pulse should be full and long, with superficial palpation stronger than deep palpation; the female pulse should be soft and moist, with deep palpation stronger than superficial palpation. People with impatient temperaments have rapid pulses; people with calm temperaments have slow pulses. In obese people, a wide, slow, clear, and fine pulse is indeed a sign of virtue and fortune; in thin people, a wide, large, long, and elegant pulse is indeed a sign of prosperity. A weak pulse with a strong incoming momentum indicates improvement; a surging and slow pulse with weak incoming momentum, or accompanied by slight choppy [Se] qualities, indicates decline.
