Jiegu, in *Ci Shi Nan Zhi* (Difficulties of This Matter), stated: "Illness acquired during movement is called Zhong Re (Heat Stroke/Summerheat from exertion); illness acquired during stillness is called Zhong Shu (Summerheat from stagnation)." This statement is open to discussion. Both Zhong Re and Zhong Shu result from the pathogenic heat evil contracted in summer. Therefore, Zhong Shu is essentially Zhong Re; originally, there was no distinction, but only the manner of acquisition differs. For instance, travelers and farmers who toil on roads and fields are exposed to surging heat, leading to sudden fainting or collapse. This is termed Zhong Shu, which is also Zhong Re; these are all cases of "acquired through movement." Conversely, for those "acquired through stillness," such as idle individuals seeking coolness in grand halls, pavilions, or waterside structures, a sudden accumulation of yin-cold qi may obstruct the free flow of yang qi throughout the body, resulting in cutis anserina (goosebumps), headache, and fever. This is a disease caused by contracting cold in summer and should not be named Zhong Shu. Zhong Shu refers to contracting the heat evil of the heavenly season; how can one contract the yin-cold qi of dwellings yet confuse it with illness acquired during stillness and also call it Zhong Shu? If one contracts summer cold during stillness but loosely calls it Zhong Shu, failing to correctly name it and differentiate its symptoms, and instead administers cooling and clearing summerheat agents such as Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) or Yiyuan San (Benefit Origin Powder), the harm to the patient will certainly ensue!
Obstruction of urination occurs when heat evil knots in the Bladder, preventing even drops from passing. The Classics state: "When the Bladder is not unobstructed, it leads to Long (stranguria/dysuria)." This indicates that the pathogenic heat has entered the Bladder causing disease. The Bladder is the mansion of Body Fluids; it relies on Qi transformation to excrete urine. Thus, if the Qi transformation of the Triple Burner fails, the water passages cannot regulate properly, and fluids fail to descend to the Bladder to form urine. Danxi's treatment method of "separating two organs" (Ge Er) posits that water originates from the high source (Lung Metal). Since Lung Metal is the mother of Kidney Water, nourishing Lung Metal generates Kidney Water; this is an excellent method. As for the treatment method of "separating three organs" (Ge San), it addresses cases where Spleen dampness fails to transport, leading to discordant essence and Qi. One should dry the Spleen and strengthen the Stomach, tonify Earth to generate Metal, and generate Metal to strengthen Water, using Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction). If Qi deficiency exists, it is appropriate to tonify Qi to transform water; however, if there is Qi heat, administering agents that dry or close Qi would merely assist the pathogen in causing disease. Therefore, the "separating three organs" treatment is pedantic and impractical.
