Dampness originates from the Spleen Earth; therefore, in cases of watery diarrhea (Shuixie), the Spleen Earth must not fail to be fortified. Only by fortifying the Earth can the Qi of Wood be nourished. The formula used is Liangyi Tang:
Poria (5 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Coicis Semen (5 qian), Bupleuri Radix (5 fen), Gentianae Scabrae Radix (1 qian), Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (1 qian), Prunus humilis seed (5 fen). Decoct with water and take orally. After two doses, symptoms lighten; after four doses, they lighten further; after ten doses, complete recovery occurs.
The purpose of this formula in draining dampness is none other than to promote the Qi of the Gallbladder; promoting the Qi of the Gallbladder is none other than to strengthen the Spleen and benefit Qi. When Spleen Earth is robust, Earth controls Water, thereby holding back the raging waves, allowing natural water flow into the Bladder to exit entirely through urination.
For this condition, Zhuru Longdan Tang is also effective.
White Peony Root (1 liang), Gentianae Scabrae Radix, Pinelliae Tuber (each 1 qian), Poria (5 qian), Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, Bamboo Shavings (each 2 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (3 qian). Decoct with water and take orally.
There are cases where a person cannot pass even a few drops of urine, with abdominal distension, edema in both feet, and yellowing of the whole body. People assume this is Huangdan (Jaundice), but who would know it is actually Damp-Heat in the Bladder condensing into Dan syndrome? The meridians of the Bladder rely on Qi transformation to excrete water. Without warm Qi, the Bladder closes and fails to function; without clear Qi, the Bladder also closes and fails to function. Thus, Cold in the Bladder causes water to freeze and fail to transform, while Heat in the Bladder causes water to boil and also fail to transform. Huangdan disease invariably arises from Damp-Heat. Therefore, Huangdan of the Bladder is a Heat disease, not a Cold disease. If closure is due to Heat, one must resolve Heat; if closure is due to Cold, one must dispel Cold. Since Huangdan is formed by Damp-Heat, one should resolve Heat rather than dispel Cold. However, to dispel Cold, one must use Hot medicines to warm the Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life); to resolve Heat, one must use Cool medicines to benefit the Qi of Lung Metal. For if Lung Qi is Cold, its clearing and descending command descends to the Bladder, preventing closure. The formula used is Qingfei Tongshui Tang:
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (1 liang), Raphani Semen (1 qian), Poria (3 qian), Pinelliae Tuber (1 qian), Ophiopogonis Tuber (3 qian), Morus Alba Root Bark (3 qian), Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (1 qian), Alismatis Rhizoma (2 qian), Plantaginis Seed (3 qian), Scutellariae Radix (2 qian), Perillae Fruit (2 qian). Decoct with water and take orally. After one dose, urination becomes slightly free; after two doses, urination becomes very free; after four doses, all symptoms of Huangdan disappear.
Although this formula is largely similar to Yangfei Lishi Tang, there are actual differences. Yangfei Lishi Tang lifts the Qi of the Lung; Qingfei Tongshui Tang clears the Qi of the Lung. Both formulas contain drugs that resolve dampness, but "Li" (draining) and "Tong" (unblocking) differ slightly. "Li" slightly opens the water pathways, whereas "Tong" greatly opens the river channels.
For this condition, Tongliu Yin is also effective.
Poria (5 qian), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (3 qian), Cinnamomi Ramulus (5 fen), Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (1 qian), Tetrapanacis Medulla, Plantaginis Seed (each 2 qian). Decoct with water and take orally.
