After childbirth, a woman experiences lower abdominal pain, which may even form a lump; pressing on it with the hand exacerbates the pain. This is called "Child Pillow Pain" (Erzhen Tong). The so-called "Child Pillow" refers to what predecessors claimed was the object upon which the infant rested during birth. If the Child Pillow itself did not cause pain, would it be painful simply because the infant did not rest upon it? This clearly indicates that it is not the actual Child Pillow. Since it is not the Child Pillow, why does it hurt? It is due to blood stasis forming clumps that have not yet dissipated. Such pain mostly occurs in robust women who have an excess of blood, rather than a deficiency. Superficially, it might seem appropriate to use blood-breaking (Po Xue) herbs. However, when blood flows freely, blood stasis naturally eliminates itself; when blood coagulates, blood stasis causes trouble. Not nourishing the blood while only attacking blood stasis may eliminate the stasis but will inevitably consume Qi and Blood. It is better to employ methods to expel turbidity (Zhu Hui) within the process of nourishing blood, thereby eliminating blood stasis without damaging Qi and Blood. The formula used is Sanjie Anzhen Tang: Dang Gui (1 liang), Chuan Xiong (5 qian), Shan Zha (10 grains), Dan Pi (2 qian), Jing Jie (2 qian), Yi Mu Cao (3 qian), Tao Ren (7 seeds), Ru Xiang (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Pain stops after one dose; no further doses are needed.
This formula drives out blood stasis within blood nourishment and dissipates lumps within blood generation. It does not specifically target pain relief, yet the pain ceases spontaneously. When people see Child Pillow Pain, they often resort to herbs like Yan Hu Suo, Su Mu, Pu Huang, and Wu Ling Zhi to dissolve clumps, which is hardly worth discussing.
Using Guojing Anzhen Tang is also miraculous.
Dang Gui (5 qian), Dan Pi (1 qian), Jing Jie (3 qian), Shan Zha (10 grains). Decoct in water and take. Pain stops after one dose.
Lower abdominal pain after childbirth that ceases upon pressure is also mistaken for Child Pillow Pain by many. Who knows that this is actually due to Blood deficiency? Excessive blood loss postpartum leaves the Blood residence empty, naturally causing abdominal pain, but this pain is distinct. It feels like dry chaff touching the body; this is Deficiency Pain (Xu Tong), not Excess Pain (Shi Tong). Generally, Deficiency Pain requires tonification, and Postpartum Deficiency Pain especially requires tonification. For Blood deficiency diseases, Blood-nourishing formulas must be used. Most Blood-nourishing herbs have a lubricating nature, which might hinder the Large Intestine. However, since the intestines are dry postpartum, lubrication is perfectly suitable. Thus, Blood tonification not only soothes the abdomen but also facilitates bowel movements. The formula used is Funning Tang: Dang Gui (1 liang), Xu Duan (2 qian), E Jiao (3 qian), Ren Shen (3 qian), Mai Dong (3 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (1 qian), Shan Yao (3 qian), Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Rou Gui (2 fen). Decoct in water and take. One dose lightens the pain, two doses stop it, and continued use yields better results.
This formula tonifies both Qi and Blood. There is little risk of over-tonifying Qi, and little harm from cloying Blood tonics. Once Qi and Blood are generated, pain stops spontaneously without specific anti-pain measures.
Using Shugui Guicao Tang is also miraculous.
Bai Zhu, Dang Gui (each 5 qian), Rou Gui (5 fen), Zhi Gan Cao (1 qian). Decoct in water and take. Cured in two doses.
Postpartum asthma is the most critical condition; if not treated urgently, death follows immediately. People attribute it to dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, but who knows it is actually dual collapse of Qi and Blood? If Qi and Blood have collapsed, death should be instant, so why is there asthma? This is because Blood has collapsed, but Qi has not fully collapsed. Blood desires to remain, but Qi cannot stay; due to Blood collapse, Qi rebels upward causing asthma. Although the condition is critical, the point of salvation lies precisely in the asthma. The Lung governs Qi; asthma seems to indicate abundant Lung Qi, but it is actually Lung Qi weakness. At this moment, although Blood is rapidly generated, only a trace of Qi remains. The Lung is urgently needed for support, but having lost Blood, Qi is weak and unable to hold firm. How can Qi avoid sudden collapse? Therefore, rescuing Qi requires lifting Qi, and lifting Qi requires tonifying Qi. The formula used is Jiutuo Huomu Dan: Ren Shen (2 liang), Rou Gui (1 qian), Dang Gui (1 liang), Mai Dong (1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (5 qian), Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Gou Qi Zi (5 qian), E Jiao (3 qian), Jing Jie (charred black, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take. One dose lightens asthma, two doses lighten it further, three doses calm it, and four doses cure it completely.
This formula uses Ren Shen to reconnect Yuan Yang. However, tonifying Qi without tonifying Blood leads to dry Blood and flourishing Yang; although Yang returns temporarily, it cannot be sustained permanently, resulting in gain and loss in cycles. Even if Blood is tonified, if Kidney and Liver Essence are not urgently replenished, Yin Water remains unstable, and how can Yang continue? Thus, Shu Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu, and Gou Qi Zi are used to tonify Kidney and Liver Essence, followed by tonifying Lung Qi to make it robust and capable of lifting. Concerned that Yin-tonifying herbs might cause stagnation postpartum, Rou Gui is added to tonify Ming Men Fire. This ensures fire has a root, assists Ren Shen in generating Qi, and helps transform herbs like Di Huang into essence. However, excessive Yang assistance risks moving Blood with Yang, causing blood stasis to rise, which is not foolproof. Adding Jing Jie guides Blood back to its vessels, calming Lung Qi and stopping asthma faster.
Using Hejie Jiuchuan Dan is also excellent.
Ren Shen (2 liang), Shu Di Huang (2 liang), Mai Dong (3 qian), Rou Gui (1 qian), Su Zi (1 qian), Ge Jie (2 qian), Ban Xia (3 fen). Decoct in water and take. Asthma stabilizes in three doses, cured in ten.
Postpartum aversion to cold, nausea, trembling, fever, and thirst are mistaken for Postpartum Cold Damage (Shanghan). Who knows it is due to dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, where Righteous Qi cannot overcome Pathogenic factors? When Righteous Qi is strong, pathogens rarely enter. If Righteous Qi is deficient, wind enters easily even without external exposure. Although wind enters and exits easily in postpartum women, wind-dispelling is unnecessary for external pathogens. Moreover, postpartum aversion to cold stems from internal cold, not external invasion; fever arises from internal deficiency, not external excess. Treating internal cold disperses external cold; treating internal heat resolves external heat. The formula used is Shiquan Dabu Tang: Ren Shen (3 qian), Huang Qi (1 liang), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian), Shu Di Huang (5 qian), Bai Shao (2 qian), Chuan Xiong (1 qian), Dang Gui (3 qian), Rou Gui (1 qian). Decoct in water and take. Two doses resolve cold and heat, cooling the body.
This formula only tonifies Qi and Blood deficiency, never dispersing wind pathogens, because sufficient Righteous Qi naturally expels pathogens. Since there were no pathogens originally, treatment succeeds.
Using Zhengqi Tang is also effective.
Ren Shen, Dang Gui (each 1 liang), Rou Gui, Pao Jiang (each 1 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Gan Cao (5 fen). Decoct in water and take. Cured in two doses.
Postpartum nausea and vomiting are mistaken for Stomach Qi cold, but who knows it is Kidney Qi cold? The Stomach is the gate of the Kidney; if Stomach Qi is cold, it cannot function in the Kidney, and if Kidney Qi is cold, the Stomach cannot function in the Kidney. Thus, Stomach and Kidney cannot be treated separately. Postpartum blood loss dries Kidney Water, favoring rising Kidney Fire and avoiding Stomach cold. Why are both Kidney and Stomach cold? After new birth, Water suddenly dries, Fire cannot generate, and cold manifestations appear. Treatment should tonify Kidney Fire. However, without Water to balance, Fire becomes too hot, risking Yin deficiency and Fire hyperactivity. One must tonify Fire within Fire and warm the Stomach in the Kidney, preventing excessive heat in the Kidney and bringing harmony to the Stomach. The formula used is Wenwei Zhiou Tang: Ren Shen (3 qian), Ju Hong (5 fen), Bai Dou Kou (1 grain), Ba Ji Tian (1 liang), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Fu Ling (2 qian), Pao Jiang (1 qian), Shu Di Huang (5 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (5 qian). Decoct in water and take. Vomiting stops in one dose, does not recur in two, cured in four.
This formula treats the Stomach more than the Kidney, but treating the Kidney is still treating the Stomach. Stomach Qi rises, cold dissipates, and large hot herbs are unnecessary to warm the Stomach.
Using Quanmu Tang is also miraculous.
Bai Zhu, Ren Shen, Shu Di Huang (each 1 liang), Rou Gui (2 qian), Pao Jiang (5 fen), Ding Xiang (5 fen), Shan Yao (5 qian). Decoct in water and take. Vomiting stops in one dose.
Postpartum rectal prolapse is also critical. People think it is due to the anus not closing, but who knows it is Qi deficiency sinking and failing to retain? Qi deficiency sinking usually requires lifting herbs. However, postpartum women may have blood stasis in the abdomen; lifting Qi might raise stasis along with it, causing Heart-piercing symptoms or other abnormalities. Thus, direct lifting is avoided; tonifying Qi makes Qi vigorous, causing the intestine to rise spontaneously. If Qi-tonifying herbs are few, Qi is weak and cannot rise; they must be used in large amounts to make Yang vigorous and powerful, preventing descent. The formula used is Shengchang Yin: Ren Shen (1 liang), Huang Qi (1 liang), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Dang Gui (1 liang), Chuan Xiong (3 qian), Sheng Ma (1 fen). Decoct in water and take. The intestine rises after one dose.
This formula purely tonifies Qi, not directly lifting the intestine. Even adding 1 fen of Sheng Ma only guides Qi, not Blood; Sheng Ma lifts Qi in small doses and Blood in large doses.
Half a month postpartum, metrorrhagia, fainting, and seeing spirits are mistaken for Evil Blood rushing to the Heart. Who knows it is due to imprudence in sexual intercourse? Although Qi and Blood are not as fragile as in the first two days postpartum, they are newly generated and not fully restored. Even if bleeding has stopped, uterine injury remains. Intercourse should be avoided to prevent further damage. Now, metrorrhagia leads to fainting and hallucinations, indicating dual injury to Heart and Kidney, beyond just uterine damage. Clearly, sexual taboos were broken, leading to massive essence loss, causing Spirit collapse. Such conditions are mostly incurable, but in desperation, massive Qi tonification is the only method. The formula used is Jiubai Qiusheng Tang: Ren Shen (3 liang), Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Dang Gui (2 liang), Chuan Xiong (5 qian), Bai Zhu (2 liang), Fu Zi (1 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (5 qian), Shan Yao (5 qian), Suan Zao Ren (5 qian). Decoct in water and take. Spirit calms in one dose, fainting and bleeding stop in two. Otherwise, it is incurable. If effective, take three doses, then halve the dose and take ten more doses for recovery.
This formula tonifies Qi and restores Yuan Yang from nothingness. With Yang returning, Qi returns. Returning Qi controls Blood to return Spirit and generates Essence to sustain life. Fainting and bleeding cease without specific treatments.
Using Jiusi Dan is also acceptable.
Huang Qi (2 liang), Ba Ji Tian (1 liang), Fu Zi (1 qian), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Tu Si Zi (1 liang), Bei Wu Wei Zi (1 qian). Decoct in water and take. Spirit calms in one dose, vitality returns, allowing further doses. Otherwise, incurable.
During childbirth, if the midwife's hand injures the bladder, causing continuous dripping inability to hold urine, people think the bladder rupture cannot be repaired. Skin injuries can be healed; why not abdominal ones? Ulcers with defects heal with medicine to grow flesh; minor midwifery injuries without toxins are easy to repair. The formula used is Wanbao Yin: Ren Shen (1 liang), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Dang Gui (1 liang), Chuan Xiong (5 qian), Tao Ren (10 grains), Huang Qi (5 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Hong Hua (1 qian), Bai Ji Mo (1 qian), Yi Mu Cao (3 qian). Decoct with pig or sheep bladder broth, take on an empty stomach. Cured in twenty days.
Midwives probing the womb causes difficult labor due to Qi and Blood deficiency. Deficiency causes damage, and damage causes further deficiency. Without tonifying Qi and Blood, how can a ruptured bladder heal? Massive tonification rapidly restores Spirit and regenerates Qi and Blood, making minor repairs easy, succeeding within ten days.
Using Bubao San is also miraculous.
Ren Shen (2 liang), Huang Qi (1 liang), Mai Dong (1 liang), Bai Zhu (4 liang), Chuanshan Jia (3 slices, fried in old soil until loose, ground fine), Xiang Pi (3 qian, carried by pregnant woman, ground fine), Long Gu (vinegar-processed, ground). Decoct herbal juice to one bowl, mix three powders, take on empty stomach, sleep deeply. Longer sleep is better. Cured without needing three doses; truly a miraculous formula.
Postpartum limb edema, alternating chills and fever, asthma, cough, chest oppression, sour regurgitation, and hypochondriac pain are mistaken for败血 (Defeated Blood) entering meridians and limbs causing Qi rebellion. Who knows it is Kidney and Liver deficiency, where Yin cannot enter Yang? Postpartum Qi and Blood depletion leads to insufficient Kidney Water and boiling Kidney Fire. Insufficient Water fails to nourish Liver Wood, causing Liver Dryness and lack of fluids. Fire erupts from Wood, supported by Kidney Fire. Mother and child burn together, flames rush upward. Metal suffers fire punishment, unable to control Liver, causing cough and asthma. Flourishing Liver Fire attacks Spleen Earth; weak Earth fails to control Water, causing edema. However, Liver Fire is false prosperity, not true. False prosperity means Qi seems strong but is actually weak, causing alternating heat and cold, not true heat or cold. Qi rebels in the chest causing discomfort. Hypochondrium is the Liver's domain; sour taste belongs to Liver Wood. Sour regurgitation and pain result from Liver deficiency and failure of Kidney to nourish. Treatment nourishes Blood and Liver, preferably tonifying Essence to generate Blood. Sufficient Essence yields sufficient Blood, and smooth Qi follows. The formula is: Ren Shen (3 qian), Shu Di Huang (1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (3 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian), Dang Gui (5 qian), Po Gu Zhi, Fu Ling, Qian Shi (each 3 qian), Shan Yao (5 qian), Chai Hu (5 fen), Bai Zhu (3 qian). Decoct in water and take.
Named Zhuanqi Tang. Though full of Essence and Blood tonics, why "Turning Qi"? Qi rebellion stems from Qi deficiency, specifically Kidney and Liver Qi deficiency. Tonifying Kidney and Liver Essence and Blood is tonifying their Qi. Deficient Qi rebels; prosperous Qi does not rebel. Tonifying Qi turns Qi. Turning Qi cures all symptoms, allowing Yin to enter Yang without rejection.
Using Guiqi Jiuchan Tang is also effective.
Ren Shen (3 qian), Shu Di Huang (5 qian), Bai Shao (2 qian), Fu Ling (1 qian), Shan Yao (5 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Chai Hu (3 fen), Sha Ren (1 grain). Decoct in water and take.
A meat thread, three to four chi long, protruding from the urethra postpartum, causing excruciating pain upon movement, is due to Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) deficiency and collapse. The Dai Mai binds the Ren and Du vessels, front and back respectively. Strong vessels make Dai Mai firm; weak vessels cause Dai Mai collapse. Excessive blood loss postpartum deprives Ren and Du of Blood nourishment, causing Dai Mai collapse and inability to lift, descending with urine. Dai Mai sagging hurts waist and umbilicus; descending through the birth canal worsens key failure, causing extreme pain. Treatment massively tonifies Ren and Du Qi, raising Dai Mai spontaneously. The formula used is Liangshou Dan: Bai Zhu (2 liang), Ren Shen (1 liang), Chuan Xiong (3 qian), Ba Ji Tian (3 qian), Shan Yao (1 liang), Qian Shi (1 liang), Bai Guo (10 nuts), Bian Dou (5 qian), Du Zhong (5 qian), Shu Di Huang (2 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (4 qian). Decoct in water and take. Half retracted in one dose, fully retracted in two.
This formula tonifies Ren and Du while tonifying waist and umbilicus, as these vessels connect there. Tonifying Ren and Du without waist/umbilicus leaves them weak, unable to lift Dai Mai. Combined tonification gives Ren and Du waist support, strengthening Qi to retract Dai Mai instantly.
Using Shoudai Tang is also effective.
Bai Zhu, Du Zhong, Ren Shen (each 1 liang), Jing Jie (2 qian). Decoct in water and take. Mostly retracted in one dose, fully in two, pain-free.
A mass resembling a handkerchief, with corners or bifurcation, protruding from the vagina postpartum, is mistaken for uterine prolapse but is actually Liver Wei (Liver Flaccidity). Why Liver Wei? Pre-birth labor injured Qi, anger disturbed Liver. Post-birth, Liver fails to store Blood, excessive loss causes Liver fatty membrane to prolapse with blood. It is not the uterus. Uterine prolapse looks like an eggplant, staying at the introitus. Liver fatty membrane often extends 6-7 cun outside, sometimes drying and falling off palm-sized pieces. If the uterus prolapsed this far, death would be immediate. Treatment massively tonifies Qi and Blood, using mild lifting. Spleen Qi becomes vigorous and lifts easily; Liver Blood becomes vigorous and nourishes easily. The fatty membrane retracts spontaneously. The formula used is Shouzhi Tang: Huang Qi (1 liang), Ren Shen (5 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Sheng Ma (1 qian), Dang Gui (3 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian). Decoct in water and take. Retracted in one dose.
Some doubt Bai Shao's frequent use in postpartum cases. Alas! Bai Shao is generally not for frequent use. But for Liver diseases, it is essential. Used within massive Qi and Blood tonification, its sour astringency is forgotten, causing no harm. Moreover, prolapsing fatty membranes benefit from sour astringency to assist Sheng Ma in lifting Qi and Blood, hence efficacy without fault.
Using Weirui Shouyin Tang is also effective.
Weirui (2 liang), Ren Shen (1 liang), Bai Shao (3 qian), Dang Gui (1 liang), Chai Hu (5 fen). Decoct in water and take. Cured in four doses, fully in ten.
