This prescription mostly consists of ingredients that directly tonify Kidney Water, thereby directly supplementing the source of Gallbladder Wood. Consequently, the gallbladder juice will not dry up, providing ample strength to resist pathogenic factors. Moreover, with the addition of Bai Shao (White Peony Root) and Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), it still disperses pathogens in the half-exterior, half-interior level. How could it fail to achieve rapid results? If one suspects that after a Shanghan (Cold Damage) illness, pure use of kidney-tonifying medicines is inappropriate, fearing injury to Stomach Qi and difficulty in digestion, they do not realize that Shaoyang syndrome originates from transmission via the Taiyang and Yangming meridians. Fire becomes dry and Water dries up; not only is the gallbladder juice forced by pathogens to nearly boil away, but all Zang and Fu organs suffer from inflammatory scorching. Every meridian yearns for rain like a drought-stricken land, not just the Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian which likes water. Therefore, using water-nourishing medicines is precisely appropriate; why would there be any concern about stagnation or obstruction?
Treating this condition with He Ge San (Harmonizing Diaphragm Powder) is also excellent.
Chai Hu (1 qian), Bai Shao (1 liang), Sheng Di (5 qian), Xuan Shen (3 qian), Mai Dong (2 qian), Fu Ling (2 qian), Zhu Ru (1 pill),
Bai Jie Zi (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, when a woman contracts Shanghan, fever persists for six or seven days. During the day, her mind is clear; at night, she speaks deliriously as if seeing ghosts. Pressing on her abdomen causes severe pain, almost to death. People assume this is "Heat entering the Blood Chamber," unaware that it is more than just heat entering the Blood Chamber. Although it arises because cold was contracted during menstruation, causing blood coagulation and resulting in symptoms resembling malaria, prior to contracting Shanghan, there was already undigested food encapsulated by blood, forming a "Malaria Mother" (mass). Theoretically, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is the correct treatment. However, Xiao Chai Hu Tang can only resolve heat, dispersing it within the Blood Chamber, but cannot transform food, eliminating it from within the blood clots. I have a most miraculous formula that treats heat entering the Blood Chamber while simultaneously resolving food stagnation, allowing for combined treatment. It is named Liang Xiao Dan (Two-Resolving Elixir). Use:
Chai Hu (2 qian), Dan Pi (5 qian), Bie Jia (3 qian), Shan Zha Rou (1 qian), Zhi Ke (0.5 qian), Chao Zhi Zi (2 qian), Gan Cao (1 qian),
Bai Shao (5 qian), Dang Gui (3 qian), Tao Ren (10 kernels). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, pain lightens; after two doses, the "ghosts" disappear, delirium stops, the abdomen becomes peaceful, and there is no longer any suffering from chills and fever.
Because this formula harmonizes both exterior and interior, the heat in the Blood Chamber naturally resolves. Its brilliance lies in using Bie Jia (Turtle Shell) to attack into the blood clots to eliminate retained food, described as striking directly at the core. How can the Malaria Mother survive to cause trouble? Taking my medicine truly validates the theory that there are no ghosts.
Treating this condition with Qing Bai Yin (Clear White Drink) is also excellent.
Dan Pi (3 qian), Chai Hu, Qian Hu (each 2 qian), Bai Shao (1 liang), Qing Hao (3 qian), Ren Shen, Gan Cao, Ban Xia (each 1 qian),
Qing Pi, Chao Zhi Zi (each 2 qian), Fu Ling, Dang Gui (each 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan presents with stiffness and discomfort in the neck and back, sweating, and aversion to wind. Taking Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Kudzu Root Decoction) fails to cure it. People consider this a combined disease of Taiyang and Yangming, asking what medicine should be used instead of the previous formula, unaware that one must not be rigid. Once Taiyang pathogens enter Yangming, one should focus solely on treating Yangming, without needing to attend to Taiyang again. Furthermore, does Ge Gen Tang still use Gui Zhi to dispel Taiyang pathogens? This indicates that Taiyang pathogens are light, while Yangming pathogens are heavy. Use Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) to drain Yangming fire, and the previous symptoms will heal naturally, but Shi Gao (Gypsum) need not be heavily dosed. My prescribed formula is:
Shi Gao (3 qian), Zhi Mu (0.8 fen), Ban Xia (1 qian), Mai Dong (3 qian), Zhu Ye (50 leaves), Gan Cao (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, sweating stops; after two doses, the stiffness and discomfort in the neck and back completely vanish, and aversion to wind disappears.
If one strictly adheres to Zhang Zhongjing’s methods and continues using Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang, although the disease may heal, excessive consumption of body fluids will occur.
Therefore, I present alternative methods so that those treating Shanghan should consider flexible strategies rather than blindly sticking to ancient texts.
Treating this condition with Qing Wei Tang (Clear Stomach Decoction) is also good.
Xuan Shen, Sheng Di (each 5 qian), Zhi Mu (2 qian), Ban Xia (1 qian), Gan Cao (0.5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan presents with headache, heaviness and fatigue of the body, and diarrhea. Headache is a symptom of Taiyang; heaviness and fatigue are symptoms of Yangming. This is undoubtedly a combined disease of these two meridians. It seems appropriate to resolve pathogens from both meridians simultaneously, yet simultaneous treatment is inadvisable, precisely because of the diarrhea. Yangming belongs to Stomach Earth. Now, water and grain from the Stomach are rushing downward. The momentum drives pathogens entirely into the Yin meridians. If one does not specifically treat Yangming and urgently stop the diarrhea, Yang will transform into Yin, and heat into cold, leading to consequences too terrible to describe. Use Jie He Tang (Resolve Combination Decoction) to treat it.
Ge Gen (2 qian), Fu Ling (5 qian), Gui Zhi (0.3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, diarrhea stops; after two doses, heaviness, fatigue, and headache are instantly cured.
Ge Gen is a holy medicine for treating both Taiyang and Yangming. Moreover, adding Gui Zhi is sufficient to disperse Taiyang pathogens. Fu Ling not only separates and eliminates dampness but, aided by the Qi of Gui Zhi, directs its action toward the Bladder. The Bladder is the home palace of Taiyang. With Fu Ling’s mild diuresis, Ge Gen follows, expelling pathogens entirely through urination. When urine flow is smooth, stool naturally stops. This method stops diarrhea not by directly astringing, but by addressing the root; it drains Yangming not by purging, but by regulating. Who can match such ingenuity in dual resolution? This is why I say simultaneous treatment is unnecessary; single-target treatment suffices.
Treating this condition with Ge Gen Gui Zhi Ren Shen Tang (Kudzu, Cinnamon Twig, and Ginseng Decoction) is highly effective.
Ge Gen (3 qian), Gui Zhi (0.5 fen), Ren Shen (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan for six or seven days brings facial pain, eye pain, and persistent chills and fever. This is a combined disease of Taiyang, Yangming, and Shaoyang. One cannot simply rule over all three Yang meridians together. So, which meridian should ultimately be treated to disperse pathogens from all three Yang meridians? Pathogens arrive via Taiyang and depart via Shaoyang. To make departing pathogens return and arriving ones leave, one must harmonize Stomach Qi. Once Stomach Qi generates, Yangming pathogens become isolated. Consequently, Taiyang and Shaoyang pathogens will inevitably flock to Yangming for support, allowing us to swiftly disperse them when they gather.
It is like bandits scattered across four directions, difficult to capture individually. One must lure them to gather in one place, then surround and besiege them to capture them all at once.
Use Po He Tang (Break Combination Decoction):
Shi Gao (3 qian), Ge Gen (3 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Chai Hu (1 qian), Bai Shao (3 qian), Chen Pi (1 qian),
Gan Cao (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula treats Yangming in 70%, Taiyang in 10%, and Shaoyang in 20%. Although it treats three meridians simultaneously, it essentially focuses on Yangming. Thus, eye pain heals after one dose, headache vanishes after two, and chills/fever resolve after three. These results stem from the generation of Stomach Qi, explaining the rapid efficacy. If one treats only Shaoyang without addressing Yangming, Stomach Qi is damaged, and Shaoyang pathogens will draw pathogens from the other two meridians into the Yin meridians, resulting in irreversible complications.
Treating this condition with He Yang Tang (Harmonize Yang Decoction) is also excellent.
Shi Gao (5 qian), Ge Gen, Bai Shao (each 2 qian), Ren Shen (2 qian), Ma Huang (0.3 fen), Chai Hu, Gan Cao (each 1 qian),
Tian Hua Fen (0.5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, five or six days after contracting Shanghan, vomiting and diarrhea are followed by profuse sweating, wheezing preventing lying down, and cold extremities. This is due to erroneous sweating therapy. People consider this a "transformed disease" (Huai Zheng) incurable. After profuse sweating, body heat should have resolved. Since heat persists and severe symptoms appear, it indeed seems incurable. I seek a salvageable method within the incurable, attempting to remedy the loss caused by erroneous sweating where sweating was contraindicated. Generally, after vomiting and diarrhea in Shanghan, upper and lower pathogens dissipate. If heat remains unresolved, the pathogen is in the Middle Jiao. Harmonization is indicated, and Chai Hu Tang should have been used to regulate, naturally resolving heat and cooling the body. Alas, erroneous sweating occurred. Now, post-errorous sweating, heat persists and the body remains warm, indicating the pathogen is still in the Middle Jiao. Using Chai Hu Tang now would exacerbate deficiency, hastening death. One must greatly tonify Middle Qi, causing lost Yang from sweating to return to the interstices, adding a little Chai Hu to harmonize. This turns defeat into victory, possessing profound utility. Use Jiu Han Hui Sheng Tang (Save Sweat Revive Life Decoction):
Ren Shen (3 liang), Dang Gui (2 liang), Chai Hu (1 qian), Bai Shao (1 liang), Chen Pi (0.5 fen), Gan Cao (1 qian),
Mai Dong (5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, sweating ceases; after two, wheezing stabilizes, allowing lying down; after three, cold extremities cease. Then reduce Chai Hu, decrease the rest of the formula by 60%, and gradually regulate. Naturally, death is avoided.
This is one method for treating transformed diseases. Seeing the large dose of Ren Shen, people may be startled by the harshness of the medication. However, Yang has completely escaped. Without large doses of Ren Shen, how can Yang be restored to the realm of non-being? There is even fear that Ren Shen restores Yang but not Yin. Hence, large doses of Dang Gui assist Ren Shen in achieving success. Large doses of Bai Shao and Mai Dong are used to prevent Ren Shen and Dang Gui from being too aggressive, harmonizing them within the Lung and Liver meridians, preventing conflict between the two meridians. Yang returns within Yin, Yin holds within Yang, leaving Chai Hu to mediate disputes. This is a perfect integration like milk and water. Why worry about large doses of Ren Shen and Dang Gui?
Treating this condition with Jiu Bai San (Save Failure Powder) is also effective.
Dang Gui, Mai Dong, Ren Shen (each 5 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian), Chai Hu, Gan Cao (each 0.5 fen), Bei Wu Wei (10 grains), Shen Qu (0.3 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan, after sweating and vomiting, erroneous purging is applied. Body heat burns like fire, cold extremities appear, breath is faint and life-threatening. These are transformed diseases, deemed incurable. Yet, there is a salvageable method, precisely because of the erroneous purging. Erroneous purging damages Spleen and Stomach Qi. Saving Spleen and Stomach may indeed be the way to survival. However, pathogens remain unresolved. Tonifying Spleen and Stomach Qi might inadvertently increase Wind-Cold momentum. One must save Spleen and Stomach without aiding pathogens. Use Yuan Xia Hui Sheng Dan (Support Lower Revive Life Elixir):
Ren Shen (3 qian), Bai Zhu (1 liang), Fu Ling (5 qian), Chai Hu (0.5 fen), Gan Cao (1 qian), Chi Shi Zhi Mo (1 qian).
Decoct in water and mix with powder for oral administration.
After one dose, diarrhea stops and extremities stabilize; after two doses, body heat resolves, and appetite returns. At this time, strictly avoid immediate solid food. Only give small sips of rice soup, gradually adding rice grains. Regulation leads to peace. If solid food is given abruptly, it will transform into Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) syndrome, making rescue impossible.
Why does the previous case use large amounts of Ren Shen, while this one uses less? Profuse sweating causing Yang loss is urgent; massive purging causing Yin loss is slower. Yang loss involves easy dispersion of Yang; Yin loss implies Yin is harder to exhaust completely. Yang loss depletes whole-body Yang, requiring large Ren Shen doses for instant recovery. Yin loss exhausts Stomach and Spleen Yin first, affecting Kidney later, allowing smaller Ren Shen doses for quick rescue. The brilliance of this formula: Ren Shen and Bai Zhu secure Spleen, Stomach, and Kidney Qi; Fu Ling separates and eliminates dampness; Chai Hu and Gan Cao harmonize between pathogen and healthy Qi; Chi Shi Zhi astringes leaking Yin. Thus, efficacy is miraculous. This is another method for treating transformed diseases.
Treating this condition with Ding Luan Tang (Stabilize Chaos Decoction) is also magical.
Ren Shen, Shan Yao (each 1 liang), Fu Ling, Yi Yi Ren (each 5 qian), Gan Cao, Huang Lian (each 0.5 fen), Chen Pi, Shen Qu (each 0.3 fen),
Sha Ren (1 grain). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan, after sweating and purging, erroneous vomiting is applied. Qi rebels with vomiting, fullness, chest oppression, frequent cold extremities, fainting, delirium seeing spirits, awareness of living people entering/exiting. This is also an incurable transformed disease. Erroneous vomiting creates critical danger. One must deeply consider methods to settle Qi. What else but Qi-turning methods? Use Zhuan Qi Jiu Tu Tang (Turn Qi Save Vomiting Decoction):
Ren Shen (1 liang), Xuan Fu Hua (1 qian), Zhe Shi Mo (1 qian), Fu Shen (5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, rebellious Qi reverses. Separately use Zhao Hun Tang (Summon Soul Decoction):
Ren Shen (3 qian), Fu Ling (3 qian), Shan Yao (3 qian), Qian Shi (3 qian), Chen Pi (0.3 fen), Shen Qu (0.3 fen), Mai Dong (3 qian),
Chai Hu (1 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, body cools, soul settles, previous symptoms heal.
After sweating and purging, if body heat remains, pathogens are in the half-exterior, half-interior. Harmonization is indicated. Instead, erroneous vomiting was used. Pathogens surge with Qi; Qi rises but does not descend. Post-sweat/purge, Yuan Qi is severely deficient. Adding erroneous vomiting causes Zang-Fu reversal, naturally leading to rebellious Qi unable to flow smoothly. With rebellious Qi, how can vomiting stop quickly? Chest emptiness creates false fullness and oppression. Spirit loses its residence, escaping the body with vomiting, hence seeing yin/yang, humans, and ghosts. One might think chasing the soul is urgent, but why turn Qi first? If Qi does not turn, Spirit cannot return, and Po cannot reverse. Thus, turning Qi first allows Spirit to return naturally when Qi flows smoothly. Moreover, calming agents are added to Qi-turning formulas. How could efficacy not be swift? Why use Zhao Hun Tang after turning Qi? Is the soul not yet returned? Actually, Qi deficiency is extreme. Qi-turning decoctions smooth Qi. Without peaceful regulators, turned Qi might revert to rebellion.
Zhao Hun Tang consists of Spleen-strengthening and Stomach-regulating herbs. As Earth Qi generates, Soul and Po are anchored. Spirit resides long-term in the Heart Palace, no longer escaping.
Thus, Zhao Hun Tang is nourishing Spirit. This is another method for treating transformed diseases.
Jiu Ni San (Save Reversal Powder) can also succeed.
Ren Shen (2 liang), Fu Ling, Bai Shao (each 1 liang), Fu Zi (1 qian), Mai Dong (5 qian), Niu Xi (2 qian),
Po Gu Zhi (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan presents with heavy body, inability to see people, and continuous spontaneous diarrhea. This is also an incurable transformed disease, caused by erroneous sweating and purging. Errors upon errors make it heavier than the previous three cases, originally incurable. However, internal vitality exists because the Stomach was not erroneously vomited, implying Stomach Qi is likely uninjured. Supporting Stomach Qi to restore Yang and generate Yin offers another salvageable method. Use Jian Sheng Tang (Gradual Life Decoction):
Ren Shen (3 qian), Bai Zhu (5 qian), Fu Ling (1 liang), Shan Yao (1 liang), Qian Shi (1 liang), Huang Qi (5 qian), Bai Shao (5 qian),
Gan Cao (1 qian), Sha Ren (3 grains). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, eyes can see people; after two, spontaneous diarrhea stops; after three, body cools and feels light.
The brilliance lies in gently regulating Stomach Qi. As Stomach Qi generates, all Zang and Fu organs gain vitality. Declining Yin and Yang facilitate mutual generation; severed Yin and Yang are hard to rescue. However, as long as a thread of Yin-Yang connection remains, life can extend. Though this condition is transformed, vitality remains, placing Yin-Yang on the verge of severance. Thus, Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Huang Qi, and Bai Zhu restore spring-like vitality. If Yin-Yang were truly severed, how could they be continued? This is another method for treating transformed diseases.
Treating this condition with Jiu Pi Yin (Save Spleen Drink) is also effective.
Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Ba Ji Tian (each 5 qian), Shan Yao, Qian Shi (each 1 liang), Bei Wu Wei, Chen Pi (each 0.5 fen), Shen Qu (0.5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, contracting Shanghan, erroneous vomiting, sweating, and purging result in persistent body heat and signs of death. People deem it fatal and beyond treatment. Unwilling to let him enter Yin innocently, I transmit another life-restoring method for desperate situations, as a soul-chasing formula named Zhui Hun Dan (Soul-Chasing Elixir):
Ren Shen (1 liang), Fu Shen (5 qian), Shan Yao (1 liang), Fu Zi (0.1 fen), Gan Cao (1 qian), Sheng Zao Ren (1 liang). Decoct in water and take orally.
If stool stops after one dose, there is vitality. If sweating stops or vomiting stops, achieving any one of these three indicates life force. Yin and Yang are not severed; connecting them allows mutual generation. In erroneous vomiting/sweating/purging cases, original Yin and Yang Qi never truly severed, only lost. Their roots remain. Once connected, vitality erupts. Stool stopping indicates Kidney Yin is intact; vomiting stopping indicates Stomach Yang is intact; sweating stopping indicates all Zang-Fu Yin and Yang are intact. Why cannot life be saved? If none of the three respond, Yin-Yang are severed, and no second formula can save.
Someone asks: Zhui Hun Dan contains only Yang/Yin-restoring herbs, ignoring pathogens. Are there no pathogens to disperse?
If no pathogens existed internally, body heat should have resolved. Why is heat persistent? Alas, after sweating, vomiting, and purging, what pathogens remain? Persistent heat is due to Yin-Yang deficiency causing deficiency heat. Had tonics been used early, complications would not have arisen! Thus, only great tonification of Yin and Yang is needed. Once restored, nothing else matters. Ignoring pathogens is unnecessary; attending to them would render Zhui Hun Dan ineffective.
Treating this condition with Duo Hun Tang (Snatch Soul Decoction) is also magical.
Ren Shen, Sheng Zao Ren, Bai Shao (each 1 liang), Fu Shen (5 qian), Fu Zi (0.1 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
In winter, eight or nine days after contracting Shanghan, abdominal pain, bloody pus diarrhea, sore throat, and internal vexation occur. People consider this Shaoyin syndrome. Treatment cannot focus solely on Shaoyin, yet since it is fundamentally Shaoyin, abandoning Shaoyin treatment risks other changes. Treating pus/blood with Tao Hua Tang (Peach Blossom Decoction) is unsuitable for vexation; treating sore throat with Jie Geng Tang (Platycodon Decoction) is unsuitable for abdominal pain. I believe neither formula should be fully used, but components can be selected. I prescribe a formula named Cao Hua Tang (Grass Flower Decoction). Use:
Gan Cao (2 qian), Chi Shi Zhi (2 qian), Nuomi (a pinch). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, abdominal pain vanishes; after two, sore throat stops; after three, diarrhea heals, and vexation calms.
Shaoyin syndrome is essentially Spleen Qi disorder. Thus, it descends causing bloody pus diarrhea and ascends injuring the throat. Now using sweet...
