After taking this medicine, black stools will inevitably be passed within two days, and smallpox will never occur again in life. Since the smallpox toxin does not generate, where would there be the pain of death?
When a child has a fever for two or three days, faint red spots emerge from under the skin, moving like shadows, appearing and disappearing intermittently; this is called "Shadow Rash" (Ying Zhen). People mistakenly believe it to be erythema-causing Taiyang disease (Taiyang Bing), but who would expect that this is actually a rash requiring the release of the exterior, where heat toxins are dispersing outward, yet accidentally encounter severe cold, strong wind, or raw/cold foods, causing the skin pores to close, trapping the toxic qi inward, and blocking it between the Couli (interstitial spaces between skin and muscle). The symptoms include: patches of redness on the skin turning white, white turning back to red, red turning purple, accompanied by panting, abdominal distension, and even pain. If the toxic qi enters the Zang organs, unable to exit, life and death hang in the balance; this is a critically dangerous condition. The treatment method must focus on resolving the macules and rashes, rather than specifically treating the rash itself. This is because both rashes and macules are fundamentally caused by heat toxins. Use the Formula for Resolving Macules and Dispelling Rashes (Xiao Ban Hua Zhen Tang): Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 5 qian), Gui Wei (Cauda Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian), Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 5 qian), Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii, 3 qian), Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan, 3 qian), Jing Jie (Herba Schizonepetae, 2 qian), Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae, 1 qian), Qing Hao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae, 3 qian), Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, the macules resolve and the rash disperses; after two doses, the condition disappears completely.
This formula avoids using excessive harshly cold herbs, employing only mildly cold flavors, because although the rash-macule disease originates from intense heat, it also arises due to dryness of the Zang-Fu organs, where internal Yin fluids fail to control Yang fire, causing it to manifest externally. By nourishing the body's Jin-Ye (body fluids), the Yin water is sufficient to control the Fire. Furthermore, with herbs that guide fire out and detoxify, acting directly on the skin, the fire-toxin cannot attack inward, so how can it not disperse outward? Moreover, since Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) is used as the sovereign herb, which naturally clears floating fire, why use excessive harshly cold herbs to extinguish its blaze and damage the Zang-Fu? Thus, it achieves miraculous results without causing significant harm.
When a child develops a rash, they experience extreme thirst in the mouth. Parents, seeing their relief, allow them to drink freely, leading to excessive consumption. This results in incessant vomiting, transforming into diarrhea and dysentery, restless panting and coughing, difficulty in urination, scrotal edema, hypochondriac pain, and soft sinews, giving rise to distension syndromes. People attribute this to unresolved heat-fire, but who knows it is actually a disease of excessive water intake leading to water accumulation and failure to metabolize? When Heart Fire is hyperactive and flaring, it causes thirst. Water ingested enters the Heart, but the Heart cannot accommodate excess water, transmitting it to the Spleen, causing vomiting and diarrhea; transmitting to the Lung, causing cough; transmitting to the Kidney, causing urinary retention and damp, swollen scrotum; transmitting to the Liver, causing hypochondriac pain, soft sinews, and distension. Although Water controls Fire, excessive water leads to stagnation, and Fire, nourished by Water, boils more vigorously. The rash subsides, but other diseases arise. The treatment should not focus on the rash, but on dividing and eliminating the water pathogenic factor. Once the water recedes, the rash will also heal. Use the Formula for Dividing Water and Dispelling Rashes (Fen Shui Xiao Zhen San): Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis, 3 qian), Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae, 2 qian), Zhu Ling (Polyporus, 2 qian), Yi Ren (Semen Coicis, 1 liang), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi, 1 qian), Jing Jie (Herba Schizonepetae, 5 fen), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, water exits via urine; after two consecutive doses, when the water is exhausted, the patient recovers.
This formula specializes in treating water-dampness. It uses only small amounts of Jie Geng and Jing Jie to slightly lift Qi. Not only does this accelerate the downward movement of water Qi through lifting, but it also allows residual rash toxins to drain downward via the Bladder. However, since these two herbs lift Qi, why not use Sheng Ma? Sheng Ma lifts Qi and forces rash toxins out through the skin/hair follicles, which would hinder the efficacy of diuretic herbs. In contrast, Jing Jie and Jie Geng lift Qi without targeting the skin, thereby assisting Fu Ling and other herbs to jointly target the Bladder, achieving simultaneous treatment of water and rash.
After a child develops a rash, if the gum roots ulcerate, flesh rots and bleeds, and the odor is foul and pungent, people assume it is due to lingering toxins and persistent wandering heat. Who knows this is due to doctors treating the rash but neglecting the floating fire? If heat accumulates in the skin and is not treated with dispersing and cooling agents, the toxic fire enters the Stomach, lingers unresolved, and becomes pathological. Such conditions require continuing to disperse the heat-fire toxin. If the treatment method is unknown, allowing the child to indulge in rich, sweet, and greasy foods will generate damp-heat and parasites, inevitably transforming into "Running Horse Gangrene" (Zou Ma Ya Gan, a necrotizing gingivostomatitis), perforating cheeks, falling teeth, facial swelling, cyanosis around the mouth, lip collapse, nasal destruction, itching sores, rotting flesh and lips, leading to untreatable cases. Use the Formula for Saving Rashes and Dispersing Toxins (Jiu Zhen San Du Tang): Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 5 fen), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Bai Guo (Semen Ginkgo, 10 pieces), Bai Wei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati, 1 qian), Qing Hao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 3 qian), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 fen), Jing Jie (Herba Schizonepetae, 5 fen), Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 3 qian), Gan Ge (Radix Puerariae Lobatae, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms lighten after one dose, further after two, and fully resolve after three.
This formula consists of harmonizing and moistening herbs, avoiding harshly cold medicines, because although the rash disease has healed, the pathogenic force may seem strong, the actual fire-toxin is light. One must not use heavy purgative herbs to forcibly attack based solely on the severity of external symptoms. When laypeople see such conditions, they often lightly prescribe bitter-cold purgatives, frequently turning mild cases severe and severe cases fatal. Caution is essential.
