When practicing, one must absolutely avoid the following conditions: violent winds and thunder, heavy rain and lightning, yellow sand and large hail, appearance of rainbows with heavy fog, solar and lunar eclipses, severe cold and intense heat, celestial anomalies and earthquakes, epidemic qi (pathogenic factors causing epidemics), demonic and strange energies, noisy and chaotic environments, foul odors and fishy smells, turbid mixed qi (impure atmospheric influences), stuffy and hot enclosed rooms, sleeping exposed in warm pavilions, near stoves or spirit houses, after severe injuries when urgently needing to defecate, after excessive drunkenness or overeating, during the period before and after sexual intercourse for both men and women, and for women during the first three months of pregnancy and the forty days postpartum. Practicing under these circumstances is strictly forbidden! Doing so brings no benefit but only harm; those seeking the Dao must not ignore this taboo.
The mind should not be used externally, the spirit should not wander outward, the intention should be focused, and the qi (vital energy) should have a destination.
It harmonizes the blood vessels, refines the skin, strengthens the bones and sinews, increases physical strength, invigorates the spirit, and nurtures the nature and spirituality.
Pathogens of cold and heat cannot invade, diseases will not arise, the complexion remains youthful, robustness does not decline, one is not oppressed by cold or hunger, reproduction proceeds without premature death, one fights without fear, is not afraid of tigers, wolves, or wild beasts, is not injured by knives or axes, and is not damaged by fire or water.
When jing (essence) is sufficient, there is no thought of lust; when qi is sufficient, there is no thought of food; when shen (spirit) is sufficient, there is no thought of sleep.
Deer practices jing, turtle practices qi, crane practices shen.
Tiger can gather yang qi (positive energy), snake can gather yin qi (negative energy).
Excessive worry damages jing, excessive speech damages qi, prolonged visual strain damages shen.
Extreme joy damages the Lung, extreme anger damages the Liver, extreme sorrow damages the Intestine, extreme fear damages the Gallbladder, overeating damages the Stomach, starvation damages the Spleen, extreme emotional fluctuation damages the Kidney, excessive movement damages yin, excessive stillness damages yang.
Immortals and Buddhas attain the Dao at different ages: youth, middle age, or old age. The source of the Dao is the same, but people are vastly different. Some have strong constitution, some weak; some have deep foundation, some shallow; some have thick affinity (karmic connection), some thin; some receive transmission early, some late; some understand the Dao quickly, some slowly; some practice urgently, some slowly; some have a long lifespan destiny, some short; some remain in the world after attainment, some re-emerge after attainment; the realization of fruit has its sequence, the timing varies, the steps must be known, and the efficacy and deadlines are as follows:
Seven days is called "Lai Fu" (Return), fourteen days is called "Fan Fu" (Repetition), twenty-one days is called "San Fu" (Third Repetition), forty-nine days is called "Chong Fu" (Repeat). Nine days is called "Yangming Xi" (Rest of Yangming), eighteen days is called "Yangming Fu" (Return of Yangming), twenty-seven days is called "Yangming Hui" (Return/Convergence of Yangming). Three days marks the return of Yang Qi, eighty-one days (9x9) marks the "Yangming Ji" (Extremity of Yangming). Sixty days is called "Ban Dan" (Half Elixir), one hundred twenty days is called "Quan Dan" (Complete Elixir). One hundred days is called "Zhu Ji" (Foundation Building), twelve months according to sequence is called "Du". Collectively named one year is called "Xiao Zhou Tian" (Small Heavenly Cycle). Three years is called "Xiao Cheng" (Minor Completion), nine years is called "Da Cheng" (Major Completion), twelve years is called "Yi Ji" (One Cycle), also called "Da Zhou Tian" (Great Heavenly Cycle). Thirty years is called "Yi Shi" (One Generation), sixty years is called "Yi Jia" (One Sexagenary Cycle).
Calculating by the number seven: Seven months is "Yue Lai Fu", fourteen months is "Yue Fan Fu", twenty-one months is "Yue San Fu", forty-nine months is "Yue Chong Fu". Seven years is "Nian Lai Fu", fourteen years is "Nian Fan Fu", twenty-one years is "Nian San Fu", forty-nine years is "Nian Chong Fu", seventy years is "Da Lai Fu" (Great Return).
Calculating by the number nine: Nine months is "Shaoyang Xi" (Rest of Shaoyang), eighteen months is "Shaoyang Fu" (Return of Shaoyang), twenty-seven months is "Shaoyang Hui" (Return of Shaoyang), eighty-one months is "Shaoyang Ji" (Extremity of Shaoyang). Nine years is "Taiyang Xi" (Rest of Taiyang), eighteen years is "Taiyang Fu" (Return of Taiyang), twenty-seven years is "Taiyang Hui" (Return of Taiyang), eighty-one years is "Taiyang Ji" (Extremity of Taiyang), ninety years is "Da Cheng Hui" (Assembly of Major Completion), one hundred years is "Yuan Man Hui" (Assembly of Perfection), one hundred twenty years is "Da Ji Hui" (Assembly of Great Cycle), also called "Chong Jia Hui" (Assembly of Double Cycle). Practice is considered complete at one hundred twenty years.
Those with superior foundation build the base in one hundred days, observe grain avoidance (Bigu) for three years, and ascend in one cycle (twelve years); this is the fastest. Those below this standard have varying completion times; the slowest certainly do not fail to succeed within one hundred and two years. Until this period is achieved, advance doubly hard, awaiting the later stage. If one starts diligently but ends lazily, letting the work go to waste at the final stage, turning right into wrong, failing just before success; if emotions tether the will, shifting the function to other paths; if one is full of pride and盈 (excess) qi, expecting immediate results; all these are like building a mountain nine ren high but failing due to one basket of earth lacking. Why ruin a century of cultivation in a single day?!
