啮舌,啮唇啮颊 心脾之气恒通于舌阳明之经直入齿缝,故邪入心脾,则舌自挺;邪入阳明,则口自噤;
Zouma Hou Bi (Running Horse Sore Throat): Zouma Hou Bi develops with the speed of a galloping horse, featuring bi-obstruction pain in the throat, swelling extending to the cheekbones, high fever, restlessness, and frequent exhalation. This is caused by dysfunction of the Lung and Spleen, with heat-toxin attacking and rushing upward, manifesting in the throat. Emergency treatment requires opening the wind pathway via acupuncture and insufflating Chilin San (Red Unicorn Powder), holding Jiao Yao (Horn Medicine) in the mouth, or taking Zidi Tang (Purple Ground Decoction) or Jiedu Xionghuang Wan (Detoxifying Realgar Pill); delay renders it untreatable. For any emergency obstruction in throat diseases where medication cannot be found immediately, crushing the root of Achyranthes bidentata (Tu Niuxi) into juice and dripping it in can save lives in one out of ten thousand cases.
Shi Yan (Corpse Pharynx): Daoist medicine emphasizes removing the "Three Worms" before taking herbs, as they harm the body. The disease of Shi Yan originates from this. Chao Yuanfang stated that corpse-worms in the abdomen ascend to erode the throat, causing sores that may itch or hurt, similar to the symptoms described above. Those who practice self-care well should take medication to treat it if the worms cannot be removed, preventing them from moving recklessly. The main prescription is Huangbai Tang (Phellodendron Decoction), or Yinnian Jin (One Pinch Gold) insufflated into the throat.
Chan Hou Feng (Coiling Throat Wind): The throat swells greatly, with pain extending to the top; red filaments inside the throat are tightly coiled like twisting ropes, accompanied by numbness and itching, cyanosis of fingernails, intense heat in the palms, phlegm surging loudly like sawing, cold extremities, redness on both cheeks and neck, alternating chills and fever. Two days prior, there must be chest and diaphragm stagnation, phlegm obstruction, and rapid breathing, making it the most critical condition. Internally take Hou Bi Yin (Sore Throat Drink), externally insufflate Jinbi Er Dan (Gold and Green Two Elixirs). Adding Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) accelerates efficacy. Xiuyun Shanshan said: Open the wind pathway, use acupuncture and insufflate Chilin San, take Zidi Tang for miraculous effect. This is due to water depletion and fire flaring up, overcoming Metal (Lung), making it difficult to treat. Avoid pungent, hot, and astringent substances. Use Yangjin Tang (Nourish Metal Decoction) composed of Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), and honey.
Hou Zhong Xing Chou (Fishy Odor in Throat): This belongs to Lung-Stomach heat-toxin. Decoct Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) for oral administration. Xiuyun Shanshan said: It can also belong to Liver-Kidney deficiency, requiring large doses of Yin-nourishing herbs. Carefully observe if the pulse at Left Guan and both Chi positions is wiry, rapid, weak, or wiry and choppy; these indicate deficiency. What Suwen calls "Blood Depletion" is this syndrome. Quack doctors often mistake it for Fei Yong (Lung Abscess), misleading many. One must know that Lung Abscess presents with pulling pain between Yunmen and Zhongfu acupoints, an abnormally wiry and rapid Right Cun pulse, and prolonged coughing up of pus and blood; here, it is merely fishy odor in the throat.
Yan Yi Tong (Pain in Pharynx and Gullet): Severe pain in the pharynx and gullet, inability to swallow saliva or food, belongs to Yin deficiency with Fire flaring. Neijing states: "Physical hardship and mental distress cause disease in the pharynx and gullet." Increase Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) in Hou Bi Yin, or use Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction), which is also excellent. Xiuyun Shanshan said: It can also be due to internal stagnation of Wind-Fire, suitable for dispersing exterior pathogens; avoid Yin-nourishing herbs, otherwise efficacy is poor.
Lianzhu Ru E (String-of-Pearls Tonsils): People know single or double tonsillar swellings, but few know Lianzhu Ru E. Its shape resembles white stars connected vertically, hence the name. It results from excess alcohol and sexual activity leading to stagnation, representing a severe manifestation. Internally take Hou Bi Yin. Externally, first insufflate Biwujinyi (Green Five Gold One), then Jinerbisan (Gold Two Green Three).
Hou Jun (Throat Fungus): Resembling duckweed, growing beside the throat, caused by melancholy and Qi stagnation. Women suffer from it frequently; mild cases last half a month, severe ones over a month. Strict dietary restrictions are needed, along with proper insufflation techniques. Initially use Biwujinyi, later Bisanjiner (Green Three Gold Two). Hold Qinglinggao (Clear Spirit Ointment) in the mouth and take Hou Bi Yin until cured.
Hou Xuan (Throat Lichen): Red filaments appear in the throat like Ge ware cracks or the back of Begonia leaves, dry and itchy, obstructing eating. This is caused by deficient Fire flaring up and Phlegm congestion with Lung dryness. Avoid salt, soy sauce, and pro-fire foods. If hoarseness occurs, it is incurable. Consumption diseases often produce this. Treat by frequently insufflating Bidan (Green Elixir), holding Qinglinggao, and taking Hou Bi Yin. Xiuyun Shanshan said: When this arises from consumption, death is imminent because Metal and Water energies are exhausted; throat medicines cannot save it.
Hou Yong (Throat Carbuncle): Heat congestion in Lung and Spleen steams the Upper Jiao, attacking the throat, forming painful swelling. Intense heat fails to dissipate, aggregating into a carbuncle, hindering respiration. Ancient texts define a boil under one cun as a furuncle, two to five cun as a carbuncle. Symptoms include chills and coughing up thick turbid matter. Skilled practitioners should puncture quickly if indicated, applying topical and edible remedies. Another type involves red swelling and pain without distinct shape, caused by excessive intake of roasted, fiery, alcoholic, or extremely hot items, affecting the Stomach and Large Intestine. Severe cases with chills, fever, and headache resolve in 4-5 days using Jinshibiyi (Gold Ten Green One) insufflated frequently, internally taking Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction).
Hou Chuang Qiji (Strange Throat Ulcer): Sores grow in layers in the throat without pain; after long duration, holes form emitting foul odor, preventing eating. Take Goujuye (Aurantii Fructus Leaf) decocted in liquor frequently.
Yan Zhong Jie Kuai Ru He (Ball-like Mass in Throat, Critical Danger): A critical condition where food and drink cannot pass. Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Niusheye (Arisaema cum Bractea), and Haizao (Sargassum) can treat this, but Bailing Wan (Hundred Spirit Pill) is best. Grind Baicaoshuang (Charred Grass Dust) finely, mix with honey into pills the size of Euryale seeds, dissolve in fresh water and swallow; severe cases require only 4-5 pills for effect.
Yan Chuang Bi Lan (Throat Ulcer and Nasal Rot): Sores in the throat and rotting inside the nostrils. Treating this as Hou Feng (Throat Wind) causes immediate death. Use one Bai Shuangmei (White Frost Plum), burned to retain properties, combined with 1 qian of Kunfan (Alumen) and 1 qian of Shanjiazhu (Pangolin Scale), ground into fine powder. Insufflate into the throat for effect.
Hou Chuang Kui Lan (Ulcerated Throat Sore): After the sore breaks, pain prevents eating. Steam pig brain, mix with ginger and vinegar, eat to heal spontaneously.
Han Gan Hou Bi Bu Neng Yan (Cold-induced Throat Closure Preventing Swallowing): Use one large Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), peel skin and navel, slice thickly, coat with honey and roast until yellow. Place in mouth, hold and swallow saliva. When flavor fades, roast another slice and repeat.
Bi Sheng Hong Xian Ying Zhu (Red Thread Cherry in Nose): Throat pain unresponsive to various medicines. Danxi said: This is not throat pain, but a red thread in the nose, like a black bubble hanging from hair, cherry-sized, hanging to the throat gate, preventing entry of food/drink. Select straight, single roots of Tu Niuxi (Achyranthes bidentata), wash, crush to extract juice. Mix with 3-5 spoons of good vinegar, drip into nostrils. Naturally the thread breaks, bubble pops, stasis blood is expelled, and illness resolves immediately.
Mei He Qi (Plum-pit Qi): Phlegm-Qi obstructs the throat, cannot be spat out or swallowed, feeling like a plum pit. Caused by internal damp-heat stagnation and phlegm-Qi condensation. Treatment should open depression, smooth Qi, and resolve phlegm. Jiawei Erchen Tang (Modified Two-Chen Decoction) is primary. Mix one cup of Leizhi (Chinese Chive Juice), half cup of Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), half cup of Niurou (Cow Milk), blend evenly, take warm slowly for effect.
Hou Zhong Ru You Wu Fang Men (Feeling of Obstruction in Throat): Caused by Lung-Stomach congestion with Wind-Heat lodging in the throat. Worry and anxiety causing Qi reversal and Phlegm knotting also generate this. Shegan Tang (Belamcandae Rhizoma Decoction) is primary. Xiaoyao Erchen Tang (Xiaoyao and Two-Chen Modified) is also excellent.
Hou Zhong Ru You Zhi Luan, Shi Ye Ji Sai (Feeling of Roasted Meat in Throat, Choking upon Eating): Use 2 he of Chutoukang (Rice Hulls from Pestle Head), grind extremely fine, mix with honey into pill-sized balls. Hold one empty-stomach until dissolved, continue until cured. Xiuyun Shanshan said: The above two syndromes belong to Mei He Qi. Classics state: Gallbladder disease causes a sensation in the throat; treat Yangming Lingquan. Heart Cough presents with a lump-like sensation in the throat; treat Heart Shu (Taoling Acupoint). These are similar categories.
Kou Chuang (Oral Ulcer): Caused by Heart-Spleen accumulated heat, or weak Stomach Qi and insufficient Grain Qi rising to cause ulcers. If cooling herbs fail, it indicates insufficient Liver-Spleen Qi with unconstrained Deficient Fire flaring up. Use Lizhong Tang (Regulate Middle Decoction) to anchor floating Fire; externally insufflate Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) powder. Mouth sores after vomiting/diarrhea are also Deficient Fire; use Lizhong Tang. Avoid cold/cooling herbs.
Kou Mi (Oral Thrush/Mucosal Erosion): Shengji Lun states: Bladder transferring heat to Small Intestine causes intestinal blockage, leading to oral erosion. Small Intestine meridians connect to Heart, follow throat through diaphragm to Stomach. With balanced Yin-Yang, food enters Stomach, Small Intestine receives it, regulates water passages, transports to Bladder. Now, rebellious heat causes Bladder to transfer heat back to Small Intestine; stomach contents cannot descend, blocking Small Intestine, causing upper oral sores and erosion. Generally, Heart-Stomach heat steams upward; do not just apply topical meds, treat the root. Mouth/tongue looking skinless is Kou Chuang; eroded is Kou Mi. First gently stir painful areas with wet silk thread; treatable. Painless is hard to cure. No bleeding is critical. After stirring, insufflate Kougan medicine. Differentiate deficiency/excess carefully when prescribing. Watermelon is excellent. In winter, burn watermelon rind to ash and hold in mouth. Wuling San combined with Daochi San is also miraculous. Xiuyun Shanshan said: Some cases resist all medicines. My pulse diagnosis showed floating, large, rapid, but weak on deep pressure, indicating Deficient Fire flaring. Prescribed Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia), Guishao (Angelica and Peony), Baizhu (Atractylodes) etc., resulting in recovery.
Yan Kou Chuang (Swallow's Mouth Ulcer): Ulcers at mouth corners with slight swelling, wet and oozing. Caused by Stomach-Spleen heat attacking lips, interacting with fluids. Burn human hair to ash, retain properties, mix with rice water to take, and apply topically. Washing with steam from rice cooker lid is also effective.
Kou Jun (Oral Fungus): Raised growth on gum flesh, mushroom or wood ear shaped, purple-black. Caused by excessive Fire, Blood heat, and Qi stagnation. Insufflate Kougan medicine, or rinse with vinegar. Burn eggplant stem base to ash, mix with salt and vinegar, apply occasionally until cured.
Kou Zhong Xuan Yong (Palatal Abscess): Occurs on the soft palate, presenting as purple blisters. Puncture with silver needle, insufflate Kougan medicine, or use Bidan (Green Elixir).
E Kou (Goose Mouth/Thrush): Also called Xue Kou. Infants within one month have full mouth and tongue covered in white flakes. Remove flakes with raw cotton first. Insufflate Kougan medicine frequently. White Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), washed, fried yellow, ground, mixed with honey and applied yields immediate effect.
Kou Chou (Bad Breath): Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) ground into powder, made into paste pills. After eating garlic/chives, swallow 2-3 qian with tea. Transforms turbid Qi in mouth to clear Qi. An internal palace secret recipe.
Kou Chun Zhong Hei Tong Yang (Black Swollen Painful Itching Lips): First bleed using porcelain shard, then grind ancient green copper coin with pig fat and apply. Very effective.
Jian Chun (Silkworm Cocoon Lip): Lip swelling with white cracked skin like cocoon, or lower lip swollen like black date, tapering base with wide tip, or nut/tumor-like. All caused by Seven Emotions igniting Fire damaging Blood, Heart Fire transmitting to Spleen, or rich flavors accumulating heat. Must examine root and accompanying symptoms, tonify Spleen Qi, generate Spleen Blood, so dryness moistens, Fire removes, swelling subsides. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) plus Zhi Zi (Gardenia), Shaoyao (Peony), Danpi (Moutan) is best. Xiaoyao Guipi Tang (Xiaoyao and Spleen-Restoring Decoction) can also be used. Mistakenly using clearing-heat detoxifying agents or tying off with medicinal thread turns it into Fanhua Bailing (Everted Flower Failure Syndrome). If Jian Chun is tight/small, unable to open/close, difficult to eat, it is incurable.
Chun Sheng He Zhong Tong Ru Dan (Lump on Lip Swollen Painful like Bullet): First needle to remove bad blood, then burn Niuxi (Achyranthes) to ash, retain properties, mix with fresh water and apply. Internally take Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction).
Chun Chuang (Lip Sore): Due to Qi depression. Apply white lotus petals, wash with steam from rice cooker lid; both effective. White plum petals apply miraculously. Stops bleeding if cracked. In Shanghan Huo Huo Syndrome, upper lip sore with hoarseness indicates worms eating anus; lower lip sore with dry throat indicates worms eating viscera. All due to abdominal heat, low appetite, empty intestines/stomach, three worms seeking food. Distinct from previous lip sores. Decoct Chuanlian (Coptis), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - substitute with Buffalo Horn), Wumei (Mume Fruit), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xionghuang (Realgar), Taoren (Peach Seed).

Puncture middle and index fingers near nail edge, one moxa cone each. Also: Hand Yangming meridian disease causes limb pain, spasms, rolled tongue. Treat with burning needle puncture, stop when known, use pain as acupoint. Shanghan rolled tongue is different.
Zi She (Child Tongue - Repeated): Same as Chong She (Double Tongue), due to Phlegm and Heat. Sangpi (Mulberry Bark), Jiangcan (Silkworm), hair ash ground, mixed with vinegar for application. Jindan (Golden Elixir) insufflation is best. Or Pugongying (Dandelion) and Huangbai (Phellodendron) powder application is also miraculous. Zixue (Purple Snow) can also be used to needle out bad blood, equally fast.
Mu She (Wood Tongue - Repeated): Tongue swollen like pig liver, immobile, or filling mouth, unable to eat/drink. Heart-Spleen heat congestion. First prick tip or sides to release purple blood. Then use silk-wrapped stick dipped in Licorice water to moisten lips/tongue. Insufflate Pugongying (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis? Note: Text says Pugongying but context implies Polygonatum or similar drying agent, likely typo for Pu Huang or similar, sticking to text: Pugongying), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Bingpian (Borneol) powder around tongue to prevent spread. If lips dry, use honey. Use raw Pugongying. If bleeding, use fried, add more Bingpian. Decoction: Xijiao (Rhinoceros/Buffalo Horn), Xuanshen (Scrophularia), Shengma (Cimicifuga), Zhike (Aurantium), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice), Chen Danning (Aged Arisaema). Constipation adds Dahuang (Rhubarb); urinary retention adds Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder).
Mu She Yi Zheng (Wood Tongue Abnormality): Swelling under tongue like white date with blue-purple veins, initially painless/cold, gradually swelling with heat, caused by melancholy. Vein under tongue named She Xi connects to Kidney. If white and swollen, incurable. Initially use equal parts Jin and Bi, later Jindan Decoction.
She Hu Zhang Zhong (Sudden Tongue Swelling): Wind-Evil invading Heart-Spleen meridions makes tongue root stiff, unable to roll/unroll; prolonged heat causes swelling. Meridian tension extends to throat, hindering breathing. Method: Prick to bleed. Grind Baicaoshuang (Charred Grass Dust) and Hao Yan (Good Salt) half-liang each, apply inside/outside. Or sprinkle Pugongying powder. Or take earthworms, apply salt water to throat/tongue. All work miraculously.
She (Sudden Large Tongue): Sudden large hard tongue, throat swelling, blocked respiration, sudden death. Treat even if coffin opened, immediate verification. Use Zaofen (Soap-Alum) unspecified amount, fire new tile red, place on ground to cool, grind fine. Use iron pincers to open jaw, rub tongue with medicine, revive instantly. Treats Chong She and Mu She too. Xiuyun Shanshan said: Mu She, She Zhong, and Sudden Large Tongue are similar but differ slightly. Mu She swells hard gradually, doesn't fill mouth. She Zhong is severe but slower. Sudden Large Tongue swells instantly, kills quickly, most urgent. Root cause is Heart-Spleen depressed heat, so needling/medication methods are close and interchangeable.
She Shang Chu Xue Bu Zhi (Unstoppable Tongue Bleeding): Also called She Nu. Heart Fire depression. Sprinkle Huaihua (Sophora Flower), or Octopus Bone/Pugongying powder. If heart breaks but no bleeding, extreme Heart Fire, take Xijiao Dihuang Tang plus Tongbian (Child Urine).
She Chu Bu Shou (Protruding Tongue Cannot Retract): Named Yang Qiang, should tonify Yang. Sprinkle Pugongying powder; or Pearl/Bingpian equal parts powder apply; or castor oil paper smoke fumigation. All retract immediately. If tongue protrudes inches, differentiate Shanghan, Postpartum, Poisoning, Great Shock. Shanghan: Bingpian powder or castor bean pill in nose retracts. Postpartum: Cinnabar on tongue, simulate birth posture, two women support against wall, throw pots to startle, tongue retracts. Others: Rooster comb blood soak or Wintergreen juice soak shrinks it.
She Suo Bu Neng Yan (Retracted Tongue Unable to Speak): Named Yin Qiang, should tonify Yin.

Nie She, Nie Chun, Nie Jia (Biting Tongue, Lips, Cheeks): Heart-Spleen Qi connects to tongue; Yangming Meridian enters teeth gaps. Pathogen entering Heart-Spleen makes tongue protrude; entering Yangming makes jaw lock. Protrusion and locking cause chewing. Clear Wind-Fire to heal. Ling Shu states: Biting tongue is JueNi ascending pulse Qi reaching. Shaoyin arrival causes biting tongue; Shaoyang arrival causes biting cheek; Yangming arrival causes biting lip. Tonify the affected meridian.
Xuan Yong Chui Chang (Lengthened Uvula): Throat obstruction. Equal parts Kunfan (Alumen) and Yanhua (Salt Flower), grind fine, apply with chopstick tip.

Red dots on nasal bridge like pearls: incurable. Loss of upper incisors: fatal. Insufflate Kougan medicine plus Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis). Shenggong Dan (Holy Merit Elixir) is supreme. Xiuyun Shanshan said: Everyone knows Running Horse Ya Gan as Fire-Toxin, unaware that post-variolous diseases overusing cold/cool herbs also cause it. Cold damages Stomach, Fire/Earth decline, evil Fire flares causing gum disease. Like sunless places steamed by damp-heat rotting and breeding worms. At this time, use large doses of Bazhen (Eight Treasures), Liujun (Six Gentlemen), Yangying Decoctions酌情, externally apply Renzhongbai San (Human Centum Ash Powder), possibly survive. Doctors don't realize, adding bitter-cold herbs kill many. Pity! This insight was unpublished by ancients, I published it; listeners disbelieved. Cheng Yishi present said: My son had variola this spring, pediatrician overused cold-cool, cooked gruel/tea/soup in gypsum water, turned into gum disease and died. Thus your words are credible.
