Patients with difficult urination are primarily treated with Puhui San (Cattail Pollen Powder). Huashi Baiyu San (Talcum and White Fish Powder) and Fuling Rongyan Tang (Poria and Military Salt Decoction) are also indicated.
Puhui (Cattail Pollen, 0.5 fen.) Huashi (Talcum, 3 fen.)
The above three ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (approx. 2-3 grams) with warm water, three times daily.
The verse states: For difficult urination, use Puhui. Its efficacy is profound despite its simplicity. Half part Puhui combined with three parts Talcum effectively clears damp-heat without doubt.
Huashi (Talcum) Luanfa (Burnt Human Hair, prepared by burning) Baiyu (White Fish, each 2 fen.)
The above three ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi with warm water, three times daily.
The verse states: Huashi combined with Xueyuhui (Blood Residue Ash, made by burning human hair) and Baiyu specifically regulates the blood level; hesitate not. The ingredients are equal in dosage, ground together and taken with water.
Fuling (Poria, 8 liang.) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 2 liang.) Rongyan (Military Salt, one piece the size of a bullet.)
The above three ingredients: first decoct Fuling and Baizhu. Then add Rongyan and continue decocting. Divide into three doses and take warm.
The verse states: Take one piece of Military Salt the size of a bullet. Use eight liang of Poria to subdue fire naturally. Assist with two liang of Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome; when the source flows freely without stagnation, moisture naturally nourishes.
You Zaijing commented: Puxiang refers to Typha angustifolia. Ning Yuan commented: Typha angustifolia removes damp-heat and promotes urination. Combined with Talcum, it forms the orthodox method for clearing and promoting urination. *Bencao Bie Lu* records: Baiyu (Silverfish) opens the stomach, directs Qi downward, and removes fluid retention. Xueyuhui treats urinary retention due to bladder displacement (Zhuanbao). Combined with Talcum, it nourishes Yin and benefits Qi to facilitate urination.
*Bencao Gangmu* details: Huashi (Talcum).
(That is, Baihu Jia Renshen Tang [White Tiger plus Ginseng Decoction], see Disease Chapter.) It is indicated for patients who desire to drink water due to thirst and have dry mouth and tongue.
Nan Yuanxi noted: Difficult urination is a disorder of water metabolism. Heaven and Water are one Qi; Metal (Lung) is the mother of Water (Kidney). If Lung Qi does not circulate, the water passages become obstructed. Regarding thirst and desire to drink water... Qi descends...
(The verse is seen in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.) It is suitable for patients with floating pulse, fever, thirst with desire to drink, and difficult urination.
Zhu Ling (Polyporus) Fuling (Poria) Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) Huashi (Talcum) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome)
Nan Yuanxi noted: This condition is distinctly different from Wuling San syndrome. Wuling San primarily treats water retention due to Spleen's failure in transportation and distribution; thus, it employs sweating and diuresis as a method to resolve both exterior and interior simultaneously. This...
