Pill (One full scorpion, head and tail intact) Baifuzi (Arisaematis Rhizoma Praeparatum), Awai (Ferulae Resina), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 1 liang), Ruxiang (Olibanum) (3 fen), Weilingxian (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Anshixiang (Styrax), Taoren (Persicae Semen) (each 1 liang, raw, ground together with Anshixiang), Moyao (Myrrha).
The above sixteen ingredients: The nine herbs—Quanxie (Scorpio), Taoren, Baifuzi, Awai, Guixin, Baizhi, Anshixiang, Ruxiang, and Moyao—are stir-fried until cooked with tongbian (child's urine) and 2 sheng of wine. After cooling, the remaining herbs are added to form pills. Honey pills are made the size of a bullet; take one pill orally with warm wine on an empty stomach. (Quanxie [Scorpio] has a sweet and pungent flavor and neutral nature; it is toxic. It treats various wind-induced urticaria and stroke sequelae such as hemiplegia, facial paralysis, dysarthria, and limb convulsions.)
Fenghuan (Wind-induced flaccidity) is also known as Tanhuan (Paralytic flaccidity). Its presentation involves limbs that cannot move, with weak sinews, vessels, and joints that cannot be controlled or retracted; this is called "Tan" (Paralysis). If the limbs can move but are flaccid and weak, requiring external support for use, it is called "Huan" (Flaccidity). Some distinguish Tan on the left and Huan on the right, which is incorrect. It simply means if the disease affects the left, it is on the left; if on the right, it is on the right. Investigating its origin, all cases arise from deficiency and depletion of Qi and Blood, deficiency of the Liver and Kidney meridians, and imbalance of Yin and Yang. In some cases, initial treatment of other diseases involved excessive use of emetic or purgative medicines, causing internal injury to True Qi, loss of defense by Ying and Wei, and lack of nourishment throughout the body, resulting in this condition. (From *Shengji Zonglu*)
Fenghuan refers to wind pathogens penetrating deeply, causing弛缓 (flaccidity) of the hands and feet. The Spleen governs muscles and four limbs; the Stomach is the sea of water and grain, responsible for distributing the Qi of food and drink to nourish the whole body. When the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, the limbs lose their nourishment. Consequently, wind pathogens invade through the vacuity, entering from the Couli (pores) into the muscles, and from the muscles into the Spleen and Stomach. How can this not result in flaccidity and dysfunction? Furthermore, the human body relies on strong sinews and bones; the Liver governs sinews, and the Kidneys govern bones. If Liver and Kidney Qi are deficient and wind pathogens invade, symptoms of limb flaccidity and weakness may also occur. In such cases, wind pathogens should first be dispelled, followed by tonification. (From *Renzhai Zhizhi Fanglun*)
