Women with amenorrhea (obstruction of menstrual flow). (If the uterus) internally (due to stagnation of Qi and blood, forming) hard masses (and further due to damp-heat causing putrefaction, leading to continuous discharge) dripping incessantly. (What is this stagnation? It is because there is dry blood in the) uterus. (What is this continuous discharge? It is the white) matter discharged (due to putrefaction by damp-heat). (Commonly known as leukorrhea. External treatment is suitable, using) Fanshi Wan (Alum Pill) as the main prescription.
This refers to amenorrhea caused by dry blood in the uterus, which transforms into white discharge upon encountering damp-heat. Here is its treatment formula.
Fanshi Wan Formula
Fanshi (Alumen, Alum) (3 fen, calcined) Xingren (Apricot Seed) (1 fen)
The above two ingredients are powdered. Mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of a date pit. Inserted into the vagina. For severe cases, insert again.
Women affected by sixty-two types of wind pathogens, experiencing stabbing pain in the abdomen due to Qi and blood stagnation, are treated with Honglanhua Jiu (Safflower Wine).
This addresses women suffering from wind pathogens causing stabbing pain in the abdomen due to Qi and blood stagnation, presenting its treatment formula. The term "Qi and blood" is used to distinguish it from Han Shan (Cold Cramp).
The specific meaning of "sixty-two types" is unknown.
Zhang Yinan stated: Safflower is red and juicy, a herb that generates and moves blood. Tao Hongjing indicated its use for postpartum blood syncope, incomplete expulsion of lochia, colic, and fetal death in utero. Honglanhua Jiu in *Jin Gui Yao Lue* treats women's sixty-two types of wind pathogens and can also treat malaria. Mr. Linchuan said: To treat wind, first treat the blood; when blood flows, wind extinguishes. Wind is a Yang pathogen, blood is Yin fluid; this is a counter-treatment approach. Safflower stems and leaves are hairy and thorny, possessing the image of firm Metal, thus able to overcome Wood (wind). Men and women share similar Qi and blood essence; Zhang Zhongjing specifically treats women's sixty-two types of wind because women have excess Qi but deficient Blood, specifically the Blood of the Chong and Ren meridians, which scatters between skin and muscle, nourishing flesh and generating hair. Men grow facial hair on the upper lip; women menstruate regularly, hence women are often blood-deficient. Safflower acts upward, spreading like vines, primarily generating scattered blood in the skin, aiding women's blood deficiency, thus treating women's wind. Blood deficiency leads to loose skin pores, making one susceptible to wind. This blood relates to Chong and Ren, so it specifically treats postpartum lochia. *Ling Shu* states: After drinking wine, Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) moves first in the skin; thus, decocting with wine aids the medicinal properties. Malaria pathogens also hide in the membrane source (Mo Yuan) and skin pores, so they can be drawn out. Blood circulates in meridians or scatters outside; corresponding herbs differ. Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Di Huang (Rehmannia), Gan Cao (Licorice) nourish blood inside vessels. Hong Lan Hua (Safflower) generates blood outside vessels. Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum), Shao Yao (Peony), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan), Hong Ju (Chrysanthemum) treat both inside and outside. Scholars who understand the profound intent of ancient masters in herb selection will grasp half the wisdom.
Honglanhua Jiu Formula
Hong Lan Hua (Carthamus tinctorius L., Safflower) (2 liang)
One ingredient. Decoct with one large sheng of wine until reduced by half. Drink half at once. If symptoms persist, take another dose.
Various abdominal pains in women are treated with Danggui Shaoyao San (Angelica and Peony Powder).
This presents the formula for various abdominal pains in women. Cold, heat, deficiency, excess, Qi, and food stagnation can all cause abdominal pain; the implication is that modifications can be made based on this formula, not that it cures all abdominal pain universally.
You Zaijing stated: Women are governed by Blood, and Blood is governed by Middle Qi (Spleen/Stomach Earth Qi). If Earth is too dry, it cannot generate; if too damp, it cannot generate. Xiong (Ligusticum) and Shao Yao (Peony) nourish Blood; Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), Ze Xie (Alisma) resolve Dampness. When dryness and dampness are balanced, Earth generates, and pain is eliminated.
Danggui Shaoyao San Formula (See Pregnancy Chapter)
Abdominal pain in women is treated with Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction).
This addresses deficiency-cold with interior tension causing abdominal pain in women. According to *Shang Han Lun*, if the Yang pulse is choppy and the Yin pulse is string-like, acute abdominal pain is expected, treated with Xiao Jianzhong Tang. If ineffective, administer Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).
Xiao Jianzhong Tang Formula (See Deficiency Consumption Chapter)
Question: A woman suffers from normal appetite, irritability and heat preventing sleep, leaning forward to breathe, why? Master said: "(Normal appetite indicates the disease is not in the Stomach. Irritability and heat result from Yang Qi failing to transform. Leaning forward to breathe and inability to lie flat indicate Water failing to descend.)" This is called Zhuan Bao (Displaced Bladder), resulting in urinary retention. Because the bladder ligaments (are twisted and) disordered, this disease occurs. (Since there are no concurrent syndromes,) simply promote urination, allowing (Qi in the bladder to descend into the air passages, thereby straightening the bladder ligaments and) curing the disease. (Use) Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) as the main prescription.
This addresses Zhuan Bao syndrome where disordered bladder ligaments cause urinary retention. "Liao Li" is synonymous with "Liao Li," meaning the bladder ligaments are twisted and disordered, causing the bladder to turn, leading to urinary retention. This formula tonifies Kidney, restores Qi transformation, promotes water metabolism, and cures the disease. However, Zhuan Bao is not solely caused by this. It may result from Middle Jiao Spleen deficiency failing to distribute essence to the bladder, Upper Jiao Lung deficiency failing to transmit fluids to the bladder, heavy fetus pressing on the bladder, or holding urine during intercourse. Treatment must address the specific cause.
Shenqi Wan Formula
Gan Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (8 liang) Shan Yao (Chinese Yam) Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit) (4 liang each) Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark) Fu Ling (Poria) (3 liang each) Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig)
(1 liang) Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) (1 piece, processed)
Eight ingredients powdered. Mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 15 pills with wine, increasing to 20 pills. Taken twice daily.
Vulvar coldness in women. (Suitable for) warming (the) vulva (using external application rather than oral medicine, called) sit-medication. Shechuangzi San (Cnidium Powder) is the main prescription.
This follows the previous section regarding pulling pain in the yin region and coldness in the lower abdomen, presenting its treatment. Cold enters via the vaginal opening and does not exit via the exterior; thus, warming the affected area cures it. She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit) is warm to dispel cold; combined with Bai Fen (White Powder/Lead White) to dry dampness, as cold generates dampness.
Shechuangzi San Formula
She Chuang Zi (Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cuss., Fruit)
One ingredient. Powdered. Mixed with a small amount of Bai Fen (Lead White) to form a pill the size of a date pit. Wrapped in cotton and inserted into the vagina, naturally producing warmth.
Shaoyin (Kidney) pulse slippery and rapid. (Slippery indicates Dampness, rapid indicates Heat; Damp-heat combines and knots in the Yin region, causing sores in the anterior) yin. (Sores eroding and rotting in the yin indicate excessive Damp-Heat causing corrosion.) Wash with Ye Langya Tang (Wolf-tooth Decoction).
This addresses Damp-Heat flowing downward to the anterior yin, causing erosive sores. Ye Lang Ya Cao (Wolf-tooth Herb) is sour and bitter, clearing evil heat, treating tinea, itching, malignant sores, and removing parasites (white worms); thus, it is used for treatment. If Ye Lang Ya Cao is unavailable, replace it with Ye Lang Du (Stellera Chamaejasme Root).
Ye Langya Tang Formula
Ye Lang Ya (Stellera chamaejasme L., Root) (3 liang)
One ingredient. Decoct with four sheng of water until half a sheng remains. Wrap cotton around a chopstick like a cocoon, dip in the decoction, and irrigate the yin region. Four times daily.
