For treating miscellaneous diseases, select acupoints according to symptoms, and simultaneously combine Yuan-Source points, He-Sea points, and the Eight Methods. The discussions on Jing-Luo Yuan-Source points, Hui-Meeting points, and Luo-Connecting points are detailed; Shu-Stream points and Mu-Alar points of Zang-Fu organs should be selected with caution. The theories of Gen-Jie (Root and Terminal) and Biao-Ben (Root and Branch) are profound and subtle; the locations of Si-Guan (Four Passes) and San-Bu (Three Regions) must be clearly understood.
On the first day of Shanghan (Cold Damage), puncture Fengfu (GV16). Acupoints should be selected sequentially according to the differentiation of Yin and Yang meridians.
On the first day of Shanghan, Taiyang meridian is affected, puncture Fengfu (GV16); on the second day, Yangming meridian is affected, puncture Ying-Spring points; on the third day, Shaoyang meridian is affected, puncture Shu-Stream points; on the fourth day, Taiyin meridian is affected, puncture Jing-Well points; on the fifth day, Shaoyin meridian is affected, puncture Shu-Stream points; on the sixth day, Jueyin meridian is affected, puncture Jing-River points. If the pathogen is in the exterior, puncture acupoints of the Three Yang meridians; if in the interior, puncture acupoints of the Three Yin meridians. If after six days the pathogen has passed through the meridians but sweating has not occurred, puncture Qimen (LR14) and Zusanli (ST36); this is the ancient method. Only for Yang syndromes, moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV4) is most excellent.
The methods of inducing sweating, vomiting, and purging have no other secrets; they rely on Hegu (LI4), Neiguan (PC6), and Yinjiao (CV7).
Inducing sweating: Puncture Hegu (LI4) to a depth of 2 fen. Perform the operation of "Nine-Nine" (81 manipulations), twisting the needle dozens of times. For males, twist to the left; for females, twist to the right. When sweat appears, apply the reducing method. Remove the needle when sweating stops and the body feels warm. If sweating does not stop, puncture Yinshi (ST32) and tonify Hegu (LI4).
Inducing vomiting: Puncture Neiguan (PC6) to a depth of 3 fen. Tonify six times, then reduce three times. Perform the Zi-Wu Dao-Jiu method three times, lifting Qi upwards, and push/shake once. Ask the patient to exhale several times, which will induce vomiting. If vomiting does not stop, apply the Nine-Yang tonification count, regulate breathing, perform 36 cycles. When vomiting stops, slowly remove the needle and immediately press the acupoint. If vomiting still continues, tonify Zusanli (ST36).
Purging: Puncture Sanyinjiao (SP6) to a depth of 3 fen. Males use the left point, females use the right point. Rotate the needle clockwise until the Six-Yin count is completed. Hold breath with mouth and nose, swallow and distend the abdomen. Insert the needle down once, and the patient will defecate. Inhale while hand performs reduction 36 times, then release breath. Insert the needle again to induce defecation. If defecation does not stop, puncture Hegu (LI4) and apply the Nine-Yang ascending count. For all methods of sweating, vomiting, and purging, one must distinguish between Yin and Yang for tonification and reduction. Operating along the flowing and circulating acupoints is especially effective.
For all diseases caused by wind, cold, summer-heat, and dampness pathogens, such as headache and fever, Waiguan (TE5) is primary. For diseases of the head, face, ears, eyes, mouth, and nose, Quchi (LI11) and Hegu (LI4) are the main points. For lateral or frontal headaches, use cross-puncturing (left pain puncture right). Lieque (LU7) and Taiyuan (LU9) should not be tonified. For head wind, vertigo, and neck stiffness, use Shenmai (BL62), Jinmen (BL60), and Shousanli (SI9). For red eyes, bleeding from Yingxiang (LI20) is miraculous. Linqi (GB15), Taichong (LR3), and Hegu (LI4) are companions (for swollen and ulcerated eyes, reduce Foot Linqi GB15). For deafness, use Linqi (GB15) (tonify) and Jinmen (BL60), and Hegu (LI4) (both reduce); hearing returns after needling. For nasal congestion, nasal polyps, and sinusitis, Hegu (LI4) and Taichong (LR3) (both reduce) are selected at will. For lockjaw, facial paralysis, and excessive salivation, Dicang (ST4) and Jiache (ST6) can restore movement. For sores in the mouth and tongue, use the sublingual orifice; pricking blood with a three-edged needle is not reckless (prick the purple veins on both sides under the tongue). For cracked tongue with bleeding, seek Neiguan (PC6). Taichong (LR3) and Yinjiao (CV7) guide Qi to the upper part. For coating on the tongue, use Hegu (LI4). Shousanli (SI9) treats tongue tremors. Jiache (ST6) is divine for dental wind and facial swelling; Hegu (LI4) (reduce foot) and Linqi (GB15) (reduce without counting). Er-Ling (Yanglingquan GB34, Yinlingquan SP9), Er-Qiao (Zhaohai KI6, Shenmai BL62), and Er-Jiao (Sanyinjiao SP6, Guangming GB37) interact for head, neck, hands, and feet. Liang-Jing (Shaoshang LU11, Shangyang LI11), Liang-Shang (Shangyang LI11, Zhongchong PC9), and Er-San-Jian (Erjian LI2, Sanjian LI3) treat various wind conditions in the hands. For pain radiating from fingers to shoulders, Hegu (LI4) and Taichong (LR3) can relieve suffering. Shousanli (SI9) treats shoulder pain radiating to the navel; Zhizhu (SJ3) is located between the spine and heart. For cold coughs, only tonify Hegu (LI4); reducing Sanyinjiao (SP6) stops it immediately. For cholera-like illness, Zhongwan (CV12) can be punctured deeply; Zusanli (ST36) and Neiting (ST44) reduce heat. For heart pain and regurgitation, puncture Laogong (PC8) for heat syndromes; tonify Shaoze (SI1) for cold syndromes. For heart pain with trembling hands, seek Shaohai (HT3); to cure the root, see Yinshi (ST32). Taiyuan (LU9) and Lieque (LU7) are connected and can dispel Qi pain by puncturing both breasts. For hypochondriac pain, only Yanglingquan (GB34) is needed. For abdominal pain, use Gongsun (SP4) and Neiguan (PC6). For malaria, differentiate by meridians according to *Suwen*; Wei Shi punctures the ten fingers and purple-red veins under the tongue.
For Foot-Taiyang malaria, chills precede fever, with incessant sweating; puncture Jinmen (BL60). For Foot-Shaoyang malaria, chills and fever with palpitations, profuse sweating; puncture Xiaxi (GB43). For Foot-Yangming malaria, prolonged chills followed by fever, sweating preferring light/fire; puncture Chongyang (ST42). For Foot-Taiyin malaria, chills and fever with frequent vomiting, subsiding after vomiting; puncture Gongsun (SP4). For Foot-Shaoyin malaria, severe vomiting, desire to close doors; puncture Dazhong (KI4). For Foot-Jueyin malaria, lower abdominal fullness, difficult urination; puncture Taichong (LR3). For Heart malaria, puncture Shenmen (HT7); Liver malaria, Zhongfeng (LR6); Spleen malaria, Shangqiu (SP5); Lung malaria, Lieque (LU7); Kidney malaria, Taixi (KI3); Stomach malaria, Lidui (ST45). Wei Shi punctures the ten fingers and purple-swollen veins under the tongue.
For dysentery, Hegu (LI4) and Zusanli (ST36) are suitable; severe cases must combine Zhonglv (BL27) (white dysentery uses Hegu, red dysentery uses Xiaochangshu BL25, red-and-white dysentery uses Zusanli ST36 and Zhonglv BL27). For chest and epigastric fullness, use Yinlingquan (SP9). Needling Chengshan (BL57) improves appetite. For diarrhea and various abdominal diseases (foot), Zusanli (ST36) and Neiting (ST44) are unparalleled. For edema, use Shuifen (CV9) and Fuliu (KI7); for distension, consider Zhongwan (CV12) and Zusanli (ST36).
All [acupoints mentioned above] are reduced. For Shuifen (CV9), start with a small needle, then a large needle, penetrating with a chicken feather tube. If turbid water comes out, death ensues; if clear water comes out, life is saved. Immediately administer Jinpi Wan to consolidate. If no medicine is available in rural areas, puncture only those with robust constitutions; high-status or weak individuals are contraindicated for puncture. Bloodletting method: First tonify into the Earth layer, pause, then reduce to the Human layer, pause, then tonify back to the Earth layer, pause, then reduce and remove the needle; stasis will naturally flow out. In deficiency cases, only yellow fluid comes out. If legs are swollen and drainage is desired, use this method at Fuliu (KI7).
*Neijing* states that for abdominal needling, wrap tightly with cloth. Acupuncturists have another coiling method: First insert 2.5 cun, withdraw 2 cun, leaving only 0.5 cun inside. To treat Upper Jiao Pericardium disease, angle the needle head upward, insert 2 fen, and tonify to direct Qi upward; for diseases below the navel, angle the needle head downward, withdraw 2 fen, and reduce. This preserves ancient methods; beginners should not use them lightly.
For lower back pain, Huantiao (GB30) and Weizhong (BL40) are divine. If pain extends to the back, Kunlun (BL60) is powerful. For waist and leg pain, Wanggu (SI3) ascends; Zusanli (ST36) descends following bowing/kneeling (tonify Wanggu, reduce Zusanli). How to treat waist and foot pain (tonify)? Huantiao (GB30) (reduce), Xingjian (LR2), and Fengshi (GB31). For knee and foot pain, Xingjian (LR2) is admired; Zusanli (ST36), Shenmai (BL62), and Jinmen (BL60) are versatile. For calf cramps and blurred vision, RanGu (KI2) and Chengshan (BL57) are ancient methods. For difficulty moving both feet, first Xuanzhong (GB39), then Tiaokou (ST38) enables walking. For soreness and numbness in both feet, tonify Taixi (KI3). Pushen (BL61) and Neiting (ST44) treat sole/heel pain (reduce Neiting for sole pain, reduce Pushen for heel pain).
For pain connecting foot, hypochondrium, and axilla, Huantiao (GB30) and Yanglingquan (GB34) are used. For cold-damp bi syndrome, puncture Huantiao (GB30); Yanglingquan (GB34) and Zusanli (ST36) with burning needle tail (moxa 3-5 cones, stop when pain is felt). For seven types of hernia, use Dadun (LR1) and Taichong (LR3). For five types of strangury, Xuehai (SP10) benefits men and women. For constipation due to deficiency, tonify Zhigou (TE6); reducing Zusanli (ST36) is effective. For heat and Qi constipation, first Changqiang (GV1); Dadun (LR1) and Yanglingquan (GB34) can regulate. For urinary retention, Yinlingquan (SP9); reducing Zusanli (ST36) causes urine to flow like a stream. For internal injury and food stagnation, puncture Zusanli (ST36) (hands and feet); Xuanji (CV15) corresponds and dissipates masses. For Spleen disease affecting Qi and Blood, first Hegu (LI4), then Sanyinjiao (SP6) with burning needle. For all internal injuries, Neiguan (PC6); phlegm-fire and masses reduce irritability and tidal fever. For hematemesis, ChiZe (LU5) is unparalleled; for epistaxis, Shangxing (GV23) and Heliao (SI18). For wheezing and urgency, Lieque (LU7) and Zusanli (ST36); for hiccups and dysphagia, Yinjiao (CV7) is indispensable. Laogong (PC8) treats five types of epilepsy; more puncture Yongquan (KI1) to remove disease quickly. Shenmen (HT7) specifically treats mental confusion; Renzhong (GV26) and Jianshi (PC5) dispel mania. For corpse-like coma, Baihui (GV20) is beautiful; more puncture Yinbai (SP1) with evident effect (externally blow ear with pen tube). For women's menstrual regulation, reduce Hegu (LI4); Zusanli (ST36) and Zhiyin (BL67) promote pregnancy (tonify Hegu for deficiency). For dead fetus, Yinjiao (CV7) cannot be delayed; for retained placenta, Zhaohai (KI6) and Neiguan (PC6) (both reduce). For pediatric convulsions, Shaoshang (LU11); Renzhong (GV26) and Yongquan (KI1) should not be reduced deeply. For early-stage carbuncles and sores, examine the acupoint; only puncture Yang meridians. It is said that carbuncles emerging from the back should be selected from Taiyang meridian: Zhiyin (BL67), Tonggu (BL65), Shugu (BL64), Kunlun (BL60), Weizhong (BL40). Those emerging from the temples should be selected from Shaoyang meridian: Qiaoyin (GB45), Xiaxi (GB43), Linqi (GB15), Yangfu (GB38), Yanglingquan (GB34). Those emerging from the mustache area should be selected from Yangming meridian: Lidui (ST45), Neiting (ST44), XianGu (ST43), Chongyang (ST42), Jiexi (ST41). Those emerging from the chest should be treated with Jiegu (GB39). For all carbuncles and sores that have ruptured, there are no taboos regarding the new and full moon.
Shanghan flowing notes divide hands and feet; Taichong (LR3) and Neiting (ST44) can float and sink. Master these tools and keep hands flexible; only then can you pass the golden needle. There is one true secret word: Tonify above, reduce below, worth a thousand gold.
