Huangdi said: The key to acupuncture for ascending and descending lies in understanding the essentials. I wish to hear about the method when the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler) Qi fails to migrate to its proper position, causing the governing Qi of transformation to lose its regular administration, thereby leading to chaotic transformations of all things. However, since this Qi variation causes diseases among the people, can it be prevented beforehand? To save the masses, I wish to hear your explanation.
Qibo replied: Your question is indeed thorough! You speak of profound principles. The Sage’s mind is filled with compassion, desiring to save the living beings. I will then fully expound upon this Way, which can elucidate the subtle mysteries.
If Tai Yang (Sun) Cold Water Qi spreads again, Jue Yin (Liver) Wind Wood Qi cannot migrate to its proper position. If it does not migrate, the Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) becomes blocked above; one should drain the "Liu" (Flowing) points of the Foot Jue Yin Liver Meridian.
If Jue Yin Wind Wood Qi spreads again, Shao Yin (Ministerial Fire)君 Fire Qi cannot migrate to its proper position. If it does not migrate, the Qi becomes blocked above; one should puncture the "Liu" (Flowing) points of the Hand Jue Yin Pericardium Meridian.
If Shao Yin君 Fire Qi spreads again, Tai Yin (Spleen) Damp Earth Qi cannot migrate to its proper position. If it does not migrate, the Qi stagnates above; one should puncture the "Liu" (Flowing) points of the Foot Tai Yin Spleen Meridian.
If Tai Yin Damp Earth Qi spreads again, Shao Yang (San Jiao) Ministerial Fire Qi cannot migrate to its proper position. If it does not migrate, the Qi remains blocked and uncommunicating; one should puncture the "Liu" (Flowing) points of the Hand Shao Yang San Jiao Meridian.
If Shao Yang Ministerial Fire Qi spreads again, Yang Ming (Large Intestine) Dry Metal Qi cannot migrate to its proper position. If it does not migrate, the Qi fails to communicate upward; one should puncture the "Liu" (Flowing) points of the Hand Tai Yin Lung Meridian.
If Yang Ming Dry Metal Qi spreads again, Tai Yang (Bladder) Cold Water Qi cannot migrate to its proper position. If it does not migrate, the Qi is once again blocked; one should puncture the "Liu" (Flowing) points of the Foot Shao Yin Kidney Meridian.
Huangdi said: Regarding the failure to migrate properly, I have understood the essentials. I now wish to hear about the condition of failing to retreat. How can we curb the excess so as to prevent errors? Can this be made clear?
Qibo replied: When Qi is excessive and spreads again as a governing force, it is called "not leaving its position." This prevents the Di Qi (Earth Qi) from following with transformation, so the new Si Tian Qi cannot migrate properly, and the old Qi spreads again as before.
In the years of Ji Hai, due to surplus in the Heavenly Numbers, Jue Yin Wind Wood Qi does not retreat. Wind moves above, and Wood transformation spreads across the sky; one should puncture the "Ru" (Entering) points of the Foot Jue Yin Liver Meridian.
In the years of Zi Wu, due to surplus in the Heavenly Numbers, Shao Yin君 Fire Qi does not retreat. Heat moves above, and the residual transformation of Fire spreads across the sky; one should puncture the "Ru" (Entering) points of the Hand Jue Yin Pericardium Meridian.
In the years of Chou Wei, due to surplus in the Heavenly Numbers, Tai Yin Damp Earth Qi does not retreat. Dampness moves above, and Rain transformation spreads across the sky; one should puncture the "Ru" (Entering) points of the Foot Tai Yin Spleen Meridian.
In the years of Yin Shen, due to surplus in the Heavenly Numbers, Shao Yang Ministerial Fire Qi does not retreat. Heat moves above, and Fire transformation spreads across the sky; one should puncture the "Ru" (Entering) points of the Hand Shao Yang San Jiao Meridian.
In the years of Mao You, due to surplus in the Heavenly Numbers, Yang Ming Dry Metal Qi does not retreat. Metal moves above, and Dryness transformation spreads across the sky; one should puncture the "Ru" (Entering) points of the Hand Tai Yin Lung Meridian.
In the years of Chen Xu, due to surplus in the Heavenly Numbers, Tai Yang Cold Water Qi does not retreat. Cold moves above, and Cold Water transformation spreads across the sky; one should puncture the "Ru" (Entering) points of the Foot Shao Yin Kidney Meridian.
Thus, when Heaven and Earth Qi are reversed, they transform into diseases among the people. By applying these methods of acupuncture, one can preemptively pacify the disease. (Liu Wenshu said: Some argue that in years with the Great Jue (Wood) Yun (Great Movement), Wood is prosperous and Earth is weak. The preventive method should involve draining the Liver Meridian and tonifying the Spleen and Stomach. If everyone does this, what disease would there be? This is not a universal principle. Why? Do all people have identical Zang-Fu organs? Suppose a person's Liver element is deficient and Spleen Earth is inherently strong. Encountering this Great Jue movement, the Liver Wood becomes slightly substantial, and the Spleen Qi becomes balanced, thus achieving harmony. If one merely drains the Liver and tonifies the Spleen, this is called "reinforcing excess and depleting deficiency," damaging what is insufficient and adding to what is already excessive. The same applies to other Qi movements. In acupuncture treatment, matching the disease with the correct point can be considered the work of a skilled physician).
