*Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Before performing acupuncture and moxibustion, one must first know the auspicious and inauspicious days of the current year, as well as the location of the *Renshen* (Human Spirit). As long as these do not conflict with the taboos, it is acceptable. Therefore, men should avoid "Chu" days (Days of Removal), and women should avoid "Po" days (Days of Destruction).
Regarding the calculation of the annual *Renshen*, there are nine-part side-passing *Renshen*, miscellaneous taboo side-passing *Renshen*, and other taboos such as *Xuezhi* (Blood Branch) and *Xueji* (Blood Taboo). Generally, if physicians do not know these avoidance rules, when encountering patients at a juncture of bad luck or misfortune, especially if the male or female patient has weak Qi, the treatment will be difficult to perform effectively. How could enlightened scholars be bound by such taboos? If sudden acute diseases occur, one need not adhere to this method. Xu Xi also stated: "For sudden acute illnesses, moxibustion therapy must be administered quickly. Within a day, only one specific time period is taboo." *Qianjin Fang* further states: "For conditions such as carbuncles, sores, furuncles, throat obstruction, and external shock, urgency is particularly critical. When preparing herbal decoctions, one must not avoid inauspicious days. Upon feeling the onset of illness, even for a moment, immediate treatment should be initiated." It also says: "When people suddenly contract wind pathogens or seasonal epidemic Qi, regardless of their suffering, emergency treatment is required. Delayed treatment becomes difficult to cure later." This argument is very appropriate. In times of crisis, life hangs in the balance; if one waits for an auspicious day to treat, the patient may have already died. This is why one cannot rigidly adhere to taboos. However, when treating latent diseases before they manifest, or selecting auspicious days such as those governed by Tiande (Heavenly Virtue) and Yuede (Monthly Virtue), taking medicine or undergoing acupuncture and moxibustion is permissible.
*Qianjin Fang* states: Regarding the method of point selection and moxibustion, if points are selected while sitting, moxibustion should be performed while sitting; if selected while lying down, moxibustion should be performed while lying down; if selected while standing, moxibustion should be performed while standing. The limbs and body must remain straight and level, without tilting. If the body tilts, the acupoints will not be accurate, resulting in merely damaging healthy flesh in vain.
*Mingtang Jing* (Classic of the Bright Hall) states: The body must be kept straight and not curled up. When selecting points while sitting, one must not bow forward or look up; when selecting points while standing, one must not tilt sideways.
*Zisheng Jing* (Auspicious Life Classic) cites *Qianjin Fang*: "Generally, moxibustion should follow Yang first and Yin second. This means starting from the head, moving leftward and gradually downward, then from the head, moving rightward and gradually downward; treating the upper part first and the lower part later."
*Zhenjing* (Classic of Acupuncture) states: The rule for the daily movement of Taiyi (Great One) is that on the day of the Winter Solstice, Taiyi resides in the Yezhe Palace. Following the numerical sequence of the palaces, Taiyi moves to one palace per day, returning to the starting palace on the ninth day. These are compiled into charts, starting from the day a solar term begins and Taiyi takes charge. From the initial palace to its destination, the sequence goes from one to nine, shifting one palace daily, and returning to one on the ninth day, cycling continuously. Proceeding in this manner, each palace corresponds to five days. Multiplying by nine covers all days of a solar term. I now list them sequentially, detailing them within each respective palace, so that viewers consulting the chart can immediately see which palace Taiyi occupies on the day corresponding to each solar term. Thus, they will know the areas of the human body to avoid, enabling practitioners of acupuncture to observe these precautions, thereby preventing people from offending the inauspicious influence of Taiyi. This is my original intention.
