[Wind-Stroke with Cold and Heat; Additional discussion on Hemiplegia]
When children suffer from various wind diseases, and multiple treatments fail to improve the condition, moxa should be applied to the Shuai Gu (GB8) acupoint. (From *Ming Tang*) Huang Di treated wind-stroke where the eyes were rolled up and speech was lost. Moxa should be applied to the area above the second to fifth vertebrae, ten moxa cones at each point, applied simultaneously. The moxa cone should be the size of half a jujube pit. Recovery is immediate. Huang Di asked Qi Bo: "How should moxibustion be performed for wind-stroke causing hemiplegia?" Qi Bo answered: "Generally, one to two months, or three to five months before a stroke occurs, during non-seasonal times, the calves suddenly feel sore, heavy, numb, and stiff, which only resolves after a long time. This is a sign of impending stroke. Urgently apply moxibustion to San Li (ST36) and Jue Gu (GB39), four points in total, three cones each. Afterwards, wash the area with a decoction of green onion, mint, peach leaves, and willow leaves to drive out wind qi from the moxa sores. Spring moxibustion is better than autumn; autumn is better than spring [Note: Text implies seasonal preference, literal translation follows]. It is ideal to keep moxa sores on both feet. If people do not believe this method, and have irregular diet and excessive alcohol and sexual activity, they may suddenly contract this wind, resulting in slurred speech and hemiplegia. In such cases, apply moxibustion to seven points simultaneously, three cones each. If the wind is on the left, moxa the right; if on the right, moxa the left. Select Bai Hui (GV20), hairline anterior to ears, Jian Jing (GB21), Feng Shi (GB31), Zu San Li (ST36), Jue Gu (GB39), and Qu Chi (LI11). These seven points are highly effective. Not all can be recorded; follow the method, and recovery is certain."
Apply moxibustion to Zhong Fu (LU1) for inability to move hands and feet. Symptoms include numbness or pain in hands and feet that lasts for a while before resolving. This is a sign of impending Zhong Fu syndrome. Treat contralaterally: disease on left moxa right, disease on right moxa left. For those who delayed treatment and missed the window, follow the same seasonal rules to exhaust the wind qi. (From *Ji Xiao Fang*) Select Bai Hui (GV20), Qu Bin (GB7), Jian Yu (SI14), Qu Chi (LI11), Feng Shi (GB31), Zu San Li (ST36), and Jue Gu (GB39), totaling thirteen points.
For Wind-Stroke affecting the Zang organs, characterized by Qi blockage, phlegm rising, and aphasia, which is critical, applying fire immediately yields results. Symptoms include mental confusion, lack of joy, or numbness in hands and feet. This is a sign of impending internal wind-stroke. Regardless of whether it is wind or Qi, apply moxibustion sequentially from top to bottom, five cones per point. Additionally, apply age-based moxa cones daily. During spring and autumn, regularly apply moxibustion to vent wind qi. Those prone to wind diseases can remain safe. This method treats sudden collapse. Select Bai Hui (GV20), Feng Chi (GB20), Da Zhui (GV14), Jian Jing (GB21), Qu Chi (LI11), Jian Shi (PC5), and Zu San Li (ST36), totaling twelve points.
*Ji Xiao Fang* states: "Nothing treats wind better than Xu Ming Tang (Continuation Life Decoction), Fang Feng Pai Feng Tang (Saposhnikovia Wind-Expelling Decoction), etc. These support the body against illness. For emergencies, moxa is best." Fan Zi Mo suffered from facial paralysis starting in May of the Ren Wu year. Applying moxa to Ting Hui (GB2) and three other points corrected it. Numbness and weakness in the right hand and foot healed after applying moxa to Bai Hui (GV20) and seven points at the hairline. His soul felt like flying, as if falling into a lake, nearly dying. Applying moxa to Bai Hui (GV20), Feng Chi (GB20), and others (twelve points total, bilateral) relieved Qi stagnation, caused vomiting of about one bowl of phlegm, followed by diarrhea over ten times. He lay in bed for over half a month before stabilizing. Later, he felt slight mental abnormality and confusion, applying moxa to Bai Hui (GV20) and Feng Chi (GB20) yielded immediate effect.
*Benshi Fang* states: "The twelve points are Ting Hui (GB2), Jia Che (ST6), Di Cang (ST4), Bai Hui (GV20), Jian Yu (SI14), Qu Chi (LI11), Feng Shi (GB31), Zu San Li (ST36), Jue Gu (GB39), hairline, Da Zhui (GV14), and Feng Chi (GB20). Using them according to the method yields immediate results."
Qi blockage and phlegm rising causing aphasia indicate Heart Wind. *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* discusses this often. Ancient formulas suggest that only those who can lie flat, feel stifled, faint, and sweat are suffering from Heart Wind. (*Bi Yong Fang* warns against taking Jin Hu Dan.)
Feng Chi (GB20) treats severe wind diseases. Tonify first, then sedate. For mild cases, treat via meridians. (From *Ming Tang*) Gao Shu (BL17) treats wind-stroke with chest/flank fullness, shortness of breath, anorexia, indigestion, hematemesis, blurred vision, and obstruction. Yin Qiao treats hemiplegia preventing walking, sudden wind storm causing unconsciousness, waking in fright seeing stars. Lin Qi treats sudden wind-stroke with loss of recognition. (From *Tong Ren*) Jie Xi (ST41) treats wind-induced facial edema, dark complexion, rebellious Qi rushing upward, abdominal distension, heaviness in defecation, fright, knee/thigh swelling with cramps, dizziness, and headache. Lao Gong (PC8) treats wind-stroke with irritability, uncontrollable crying/laughing, and hand bi. Nei Guan (PC6) treats wind-stroke with elbow spasm, primarily treated by Wan Gu (GB37). (From *Jia Yi Jing*) Xin Shu (BL15) treats Heart Wind with sorrowful speech and weeping. (From *Tong Ren*, see manic wandering) Bai Hui (GV20) treats wind epilepsy, wind-stroke, opisthotonos, excessive crying, incoherent speech, unpredictable attacks, frothing at the mouth, heart fright, restlessness, and forgetfulness. (From *Tong Ren*) Kun Lun (BL60) treats mania and great wind. (From *Qian Jin*) Yin Qiao treats sudden wind storm causing unconsciousness and hemiplegia. Zhao Hai (KI6) treats great wind with silent unawareness of pain and visual hallucinations of stars. Tian Jing (TE10) treats great wind with silent unawareness of pain, sadness, and unhappiness. Bai Hui (GV20) treats Qing Feng and Xin Feng. (See wind epilepsy) Jian Liao (TE15) treats lateral wind and wind-heat. (See wind-stroke aphasia)
Qi Bo said: "There are four major types of wind-stroke: 1. Pian Ku (Hemiplegia); 2. Feng Fei (Flaccidity); 3. Feng Yi (Aphasia); 4. Feng Bi (Painful Obstruction). Acute illnesses are mostly due to wind. Initially mild and unnoticed, one should quickly administer Xu Ming Tang and apply moxibustion to relevant Shu points. Wind is the leader of a hundred diseases. Qi Bo's four types represent the most severe. Wind usually enters through the Back-Shu points of the five Zang organs on the back. All Zang organs can be affected, but Lung disease is most urgent because the Lung governs Qi and covers the other Zang organs. Lung Wind patients lie supine with chest fullness, shortness of breath, suffocation, and sweating. This is Lung Wind. If the color from below the eyes and nose down to the mouth is white, it is treatable. Urgently moxa Fei Shu (BL13) one hundred cones, and take Xu Ming Tang, reducing dose for children. If it becomes acute Jaundice, the Lung is damaged, blood is transformed, and it is untreatable. If struck by acute wind pathogen, leading to coma,恍惚 (trance), delirium, or shortness of breath preventing speech, seek a master doctor immediately, otherwise death occurs overnight. If noticed early, moxa Fei Shu (BL13), Ge Shu (BL17), and Gan Shu (BL18) dozens of cones, and urgently take Xu Ming Tang to save. If saliva flows uncontrollably, give medicine immediately after moxa. Yang meridians contracting wind also cause trance and delirium, similar to Lung disease, but if slow-progressing, death occurs after a long time. Liver Wind patients squat and cannot bow their heads. A slight bluish tint around the eyes and forehead indicates Liver Wind. If lips are blue and face yellow, it is treatable. Urgently moxa Gan Shu (BL18) one hundred cones, and take Xu Ming Tang. Heart Wind patients can only lie supine, cannot turn sideways, feel stifled, confused, faint, and sweat coldly. This is Heart Wind. If lips are bright red, it is treatable. Urgently moxa Xin Shu (BL15) one hundred cones, and take Xu Ming Tang. Spleen Wind patients squat with abdominal fullness, whole-body jaundice, and vomiting salty fluid. It is treatable. Urgently moxa Pi Shu (BL20) one hundred cones, and take Xu Ming Tang. Kidney Wind patients squat with lower back pain. If no yellow patches like cakes appear on the flanks, it is treatable. Urgently moxa Shen Shu (BL23) one hundred cones, and take Xu Ming Tang. Large Intestine Wind patients lie with continuous borborygmus. Moxa Da Chang Shu (BL25) one hundred cones, and can take Xu Ming Tang."
A villager suddenly felt intense heat in the heart and abdomen. He rushed to a pharmacy describing his symptoms. The pharmacist thought it was a pre-stroke sign and gave wind-treatment medicine, but the stroke did not occur. I kept this in mind. Arriving in Yiling, I saw a prefecture governor who suddenly suffered severe heat in summer, sprinkling water on the ground, lying on a bamboo mat, and having someone fan him. The next day, he had a stroke and died days later. People blamed the mat and fan. Arriving in Liyang, I saw an old woman who also suffered heat in summer, sleeping in the hall at night. The next day she had a stroke. Her son happened to have prepared Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Minor Continuation Life Decoction) for her. After medication and medical care, she recovered in days. I realized that stroke often follows intense internal heat in the heart and abdomen, and Xiao Xu Ming Tang must be taken.
Wang Ling suffered from wind disease. The doctor mixed Qingzhou Bai Yuan Zi, Pai Feng Tang, Xu Ming Tang, Si Wu Tang, Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang, Zhu Fu Tang, and Jia He San, mixing doses. Each dose used one bowl of water, three jujubes, and five slices of ginger, decocted to 70%, strained, and taken warm. (This formula proved effective for others. Zhou Hu Chuan's Three Decoctions and Four Powders use Si Jun Zi Tang, Pai Feng Tang, Xu Ming Tang, Jia He San, Ji Feng Zheng Qi Yun Qi San, curing all wind diseases.)
Liver Wind prognosis: if the patient cannot speak, moxa Ren Zhong (CV26), then Da Zhui (GV14), then Gan Shu (BL18) fifty cones, and age-based cones elsewhere. Blind patients gain sight after 200-300 cones. For Heart Wind-Cold, moxa Xin Shu (BL15) fifty cones each side. Bian Que said: "For Heart Wind, moxa one inch two fen on both sides of Xin Shu (BL15), five to seven cones. Opposite the heart are Gan Shu (BL18) two points, treating Heart Wind with abdominal fullness, indigestion, hematemesis, pain, emaciation, anorexia, epistaxis, blurred vision, shoulder/flank pain, urgency in urination. Moxa 200-300 cones until cured, then stop. Bian Que said: 'For sudden evil wind with heart oppression, toxicity, and near-death, urgently moxa the transverse crease below the big toe based on age, immediate cure.' For tendon stiffness preventing walking: if inner ankle tendons are tight, moxa forty cones above inner ankle; if outer ankle tendons are tight, moxa thirty cones above outer ankle, immediate cure. For eyes rolling up with fixed gaze, moxa two seven-cone sets behind the eye corners. For aphasia, moxa one hundred cones above the third vertebra. For unconsciousness, moxa seven cones at the end of the costal margin. For eye retraction, jaw clenching, and severe abdominal pain, moxa fourteen cones at the first transverse line below the scrotum, also good for sudden death."
Treating Great Wind, Sudden Wind, and various acute wind attacks where the patient is unaware, or has abdominal distension, hemiplegia, locked jaw, drooling, closed eyes/deafness, rigid cold body, mental confusion, uncontrolled emotions, blue lips/white mouth, eye retraction, or opisthotonos. Upon feeling the onset, moxa Shen Ting (GV24) seven cones, then Qu Cha (GV21), Shang Guan (ST7), Xia Guan (ST7), Jia Che (ST6), Lian Quan (CV23), Xin Hui (GV22), Bai Hui (GV20), Ben Shen (GB13), Tian Zhu (BL10), Tao Dao (GV13), Feng Men (BL12), Xin Shu (BL15), Gan Shu (BL18), Shen Shu (BL23), Pang Guang Shu (BL28), Qu Chi (LI11), Jian Liao (TE15), Zhi Gou (TE6), He Gu (LI4), Jian Shi (PC5), Yang Ling Quan (GB34), Yang Fu (GB38), Kun Lun (BL60). Seven cones each.
Treating wind: moxa Shang Xing (GV23) 200 cones, Qian Ding (GV21) 240 cones, Bai Hui (GV20) 200 cones, Nao Hu (GV16) and Feng Fu (GV16) 300 cones each. Treating Great Wind: moxa Bai Hui (GV20) 700 cones. Treating hundred winds: measure two inches three fen on both sides of Da Zhui (GV14) at the neck base, using the patient's finger cun measurement, moxa one hundred cones each side until cured. Treating wind tinnitus: find a hole approx. 8.5 fen behind the ear, moxa all winds until cured. Mania also cured. Moxa 100 cones front and back of both Ear Gates (Er Men). Treating sudden evil wind near death, aphasia, and flesh bi unconsciousness: moxa the fifth vertebra, named Zang Shu, 150-300 cones until cured. Da Chang Shu (BL25) treats wind with borborygmus, diarrhea, indigestion, lower abdominal colic, back stiffness, difficulty in urination/defecation, and anorexia. Moxa 100 cones, repeat every three days. Ye Men (BL34? Note: likely typo in source or obscure point, transliterated as Ye Men) moxa 50 cones, main wind. Jue Gu (GB39) moxa 100 cones, treating wind with heavy body, vexation, and leg pain. Bai Hui (GV20), Tian Fu (LI16), Qu Chi (LI11), Lie Que (LU7) treat evil wind pathogen, tearing, and forgetfulness. Yong Quan (KI1) treats wind entering the abdomen. Shang Yang (LI1) treats ear conditions. Lin Qi (GB15) treats great wind eye pain. (Jia Yi Jing says: outer canthus pain) Guan Chong (TE1) treats dark face and damp wind. Jie Xi (ST41) treats wind from head to foot.
Regarding the Chen Xiang Ban Xia Tang formula: "In women, wind-stroke involves deficiency of Heart and Kidney, chaos in hundred vessels, scattered Qi, and congealed blood. Taking cooling medicines like gold, silver, cinnabar, borneol, or musk causes limb paralysis and meridian death. Taking raw Fu Zi (Aconite) increases empty heat and aphasia, potentially causing disability. Good practitioners first tonify Qi and benefit the Heart, resolve phlegm, and awaken the Spleen, then treat wind, achieving 80-90% success. Use one roasted Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), equal parts aromatic herbs, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 0.5 liang, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) 1 qian. Wash each seven times in decoction. Coarsely powder. Take two large qian, two cups of water, ten ginger slices, decoct to one cup. Take warm on an empty stomach. Divine effect." The theory is sound, so it is attached here.
Ye Men treats wind-cold-heat. (Qian Jin) Nei Guan (PC6) treats hand wind-heat. Jian Shi (PC5) treats head/body wind-heat. Hou Xi (SI3) treats wind-body cold. Xi treats chest cold like wind. Lung cold moxa Fei Shu (BL13) 100 cones. Kidney cold moxa Shen Shu (BL23) 100 cones. Da Heng treats great wind with rebellious Qi and much cold. (Tong Ren) For wind-stroke, use Xu Ming Tang, Pai Feng Tang, Shen Jing Dan, Yin Yu Jiu, plus moxa, must cure. (Benshi Fang)
