[Xiao Shen (Kidney Wasting) and Xiao Zhong (Middle Jiao Wasting)]
Shangqiu (SP5), governs vexation in the chest with thirst. (From *Qianjin Fang*) Yishhe (BL28), governs Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). Accompanied by fever, yellow complexion of the face and eyes. (*Mingtang Jing* records the same.) Chengjiang (CV24), (According to the lower section of *Mingtang Jing*: governs incessant drinking.)
Yishhe (BL28), Guanchong (SJ1), RanGu (KI2), govern Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome) with polydipsia. Yinbai (SP1), governs drinking due to thirst. Laogong (PC8), governs bitter thirst with inability to eat. Quchi (LI11), governs alternating chills and fever with thirst. Xingjian (LR2), Taichong (LR3), govern dry throat and propensity for thirst. (All from *Qianjin Fang*). Yishhe (BL28), (See Abdominal Distension). Zhonglüshu (BL27), treats Kidney Deficiency type Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). With anhidrosis. (*Mingtang Jing* reads "hyperhidrosis".) Inability to flex or extend the waist and spine. Abdominal distension and hypochondriac pain. (From *Tongren Shuxue Zhenjiu Tujing*) Duiduan (GV26), treats yellow urine. Dry tongue with Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). RanGu (KI2), treats prolapsed tongue, vexation and fullness, and Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). Shuigou (GV26), treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome) with unmeasured drinking. (*Mingtang Jing* records the same.) Yanggang (BL18), cures Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). (Intestinal murmurs can be seen in the lower section of *Mingtang Jing*.)
Ancient formulas record three types of thirst diseases: Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome), Xiao Zhong (Middle Jiao Wasting), and Xiao Shen (Kidney Wasting). Xiao Shen (Kidney Wasting) strictly forbids sexual intercourse. Li Sibuli stated that Kidney Deficiency leads to Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome); Xiao Zhong (Middle Jiao Wasting) should also observe this prohibition. Zhang Zhongjing stated that it is suitable to take Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). If ineffective after taking it, it is because Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) was not removed. A colleague living in the same dormitory suffered from this. Someone taught him to take Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) removed and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 五味子) added; he recovered immediately. Another official colleague suffered from this. I taught him to take Gouqi Tang (Goji Berry Decoction) from *Qianjin Fang*; he also recovered. Su Dongpo's writings record that Dr. Zhang from Meishan treated Yang Yingchen's thirst disease. (See Su Dongpo's collected works.) She-xiang (Moschus) and Dangmenzi (also Moschus) were soaked in wine to make ten pills. Zhi-gou (Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, commonly known as Ji Ju Zi, 鸡距子, or Lai Han Zhi Tou, 癞汉指头) was decocted and drunk, resulting in recovery. Dr. Zhang said that Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome) and Xiao Zhong (Middle Jiao Wasting) are both caused by Spleen Decline and Kidney Failure. Earth fails to overcome Water, and Kidney fluids fail to ascend, thus forming this disease. Currently diagnosing Yang, the Spleen pulse is extremely large, the pulse is hot, and the Kidney Qi is declining. This should be due to excessive consumption of fruits. Deficient heat in the Spleen causes double the food intake and excessive water drinking. Excessive water leads to excessive urination; this is not true Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome). Moschus (She-xiang, 麝香) can neutralize alcohol toxicity; fruit trees do not grow near it. Outside the house there is a Zhi-gou tree; wine brewed inside does not ferment properly. Therefore, these two substances are used to remove the toxicity of alcohol and fruits. His discussion is reasonable, so it is recorded here.
For any Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome) lasting more than one hundred days, moxibustion and acupuncture must not be performed. If moxibustion or acupuncture is applied, pus and fluid will leak from the wound continuously, eventually leading to carbuncles, emaciation, and death. One must also avoid any accidental injury. For patients who have just contracted the disease, needling and moxibustion can be performed according to the prescription. If treating the Yin meridians via moxibustion yields no improvement, it is advisable to treat the Yang meridians. (See *Qianjin Fang* in detail, which lists dozens of acupoints.)
