The Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin starts at Zhongfu (LU-1) and ends at Shaoshang (LU-11). The Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming starts at Shangyang (LI-1) and is governed by Yingxiang (LI-18). The Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming starts at Lidui (ST-45) and Touwei (ST-8). The Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin involves Yinbai (SP-1) and Dabao (SP-21). The Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang extends from Jingming (BL-1) to Zhiyin (BL-67). The Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin resides from Yongquan (KI-1) to Yuful (KI-23). The Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin starts at Zhongchong (PC-9) and follows Tianchi (PC-1). The Sanjiao Meridian of Hand-Shaoyang pushes from Guanchong (TE-1) to Ermen (TE-21). The Gallbladder Meridian of Foot-Shaoyang begins at Qiaoyin (GB-1) and Tongziliao (GB-1). The Liver Meridian of Foot-Jueyin continues from Dadun (LR-1) to Qimen (LR-14). The Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin comes from Shaochong (HT-9) and Jiquan (HT-1). The Small Intestine Meridian of Hand-Taiyang finishes with Shaoze (SI-1) and Tinggong (SI-19). This is the song of the beginning and end of acupoints in the Twelve Meridians. Students should engrave it in their hearts and lungs for reference.
The Lung corresponds to Yin hour, Large Intestine to Mao hour, Stomach to Chen hour, Spleen to Si hour, Heart to Wu hour, Small Intestine to Wei hour, Bladder to Shen hour, Kidney to You hour, Pericardium to Xu hour, Sanjiao to Hai hour, Gallbladder to Zi hour, and Liver to Chou hour. This is the flow and distribution of meridians; you should keep it in mind. Jia Wood corresponds to Gallbladder, Yi Wood to Liver, Bing Fire to Small Intestine, Ding Fire to Heart, Wu Earth to Stomach, Ji Earth to Spleen, Geng Metal to Large Intestine, Xin Metal to Lung, Ren Water to Bladder, and Gui Water to Kidney storage. Sanjiao also entrusts to Ren, and Bao Luo (Pericardium) returns to Gui.
Zusanli (ST-36) and Neiting (ST-44); Quchi (LI-11) connects with Hegu (LI-4); Huantiao (GB-30 and Yanglingquan (GB-34); Tongli (HT-5) stands together with Lieque (LU-7); Weizhong (BL-40) pairs with Chengshan (BL-57); down to Kunlun (BL-60). For the method of "Dan" (supporting), one supports both ends; for the method of "Jie" (intercepting), one intercepts the middle. This method is unknown to others; it is like a golden lock that opens joints. (Wang Ji notes: Other schools add Taichong (LR-3) to make twelve acupoints, removing Yanglingquan (GB-34) and adding Yangfu (GB-38). Pulling is called Dan, pushing with the left hand is called Jie. Dan brings Qi, Jie sends Qi away. Those who interpret without fixed views, because this usage is not seen in classics, each interprets according to their own ideas.)
Gongsun (SP-4) connects to the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), governing Stomach, Heart, and Chest. Neiguan (PC-6) connects to the Yin Wei Mai (Yin Linking Vessel), generally same below. Linqi (GB-41) connects to the Gallbladder Meridian and Dai Mai (Belt Vessel). Waiguan (TE-5) connects to the Yang Wei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel), meeting at the outer canthus. Houxi (SI-3) connects to the Du Mai (Governing Vessel), inside the neck. Shenmai (BL-62) connects to the Yang Qiao Mai (Yang Heel Vessel), meridians also connect. Lieque (LU-7) connects to the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), traveling through the Lung system. Zhaohai (KI-6) connects to the Yin Qiao Mai (Yin Heel Vessel), treating throat obstruction.
(For heat diseases inside, select the Hui-Meeting points according to their belonging.)
The Eight Extraordinary Vessels connect to the Eight Hui-Meeting Points. Fu-Hui is Tai Cang (Zhongwan CV-12) inside; Zang-Hui is Zhangmen (LR-13) in the costal region; Gu-Hui is Dazhu (BL-11), Xue-Hui is Geshu (BL-17).
The Lung Meridian has much Qi and little Blood. Shi Dong (Disease caused by Qi movement) manifests as wheezing and cough. Lung distension, fullness, pain in Quepen, crossing hands over chest constitutes Bi Jue. Suo Sheng (Diseases produced) include Qi cough, panting, thirst, vexation, chest fullness and knotting. Pain on the anterior medial aspect of the arm, frequent urination, hot palms. Qi deficiency causes shoulder and back pain with cold. Suo Sheng also includes epistaxis, eye pain, dry mouth, bi syndrome. Difficulty using the thumb and index finger, pain in the anterior lateral shoulder.
The Stomach Meridian has much Qi and much Blood. Shi Dong manifests as yawning, dark face, shivering aversion to cold, fear of people, sudden terror at wood sounds, climbing high singing, discarding clothes and running, or abdominal distension with rushing noises. If these diseases lead to Jue exhaustion, Suo Sheng includes mania and malaria. Damp-wheat disease with sweating, epistaxis, lip sores, bi knotting, knee pain, abdominal distension with Qi attack, pain in Ying, Futu, and lateral aspects, penetrating pain in dorsum pedis and second toe. Excess reduces food consumption and yellow urine; deficiency causes cold trembling in the front, stomach fullness and indigestion. Qi excess causes steaming heat in the front; this is true Stomach Meridian disease.
The Spleen Meridian has excess Qi and deficient Blood. Shi Dong disease is caused by Qi, vomiting immediately after eating, epigastric pain, body pain difficult to move. Abdominal distension, frequent belching, stiff tongue root, comfort after eating/Qi but then decline. Suo Sheng includes swollen painful tongue, heavy body, anorexia, vexation, urgent epigastric pain, watery diarrhea, loose stools, masses, cold malaria, inability to lie down, swelling of thighs and knees when standing forcibly, carbuncles, jaundice, atrophy of the big toe.
The Heart Meridian has much Qi and little Blood. Shi Dong includes unbearable heart and spleen pain, thirst wanting water, dry throat. Suo Sheng includes hypochondriac pain, eyes like gold, pain in posterior medial aspect of hypochondrium and arm, hot palms seeking the meridian.
The Small Intestine Meridian has little Qi and much Blood. Shi Dong includes painful throat, swelling under chin unable to look back, shoulder like being pulled, elbow like broken. Suo Sheng mainly governs shoulder pain, deafness, yellow eyes, swollen cheeks, pain in posterior lateral aspect of elbow and arm, requiring careful differentiation.
The Bladder Meridian has much Blood and little Qi. Shi Dong includes unbearable headache, neck like pulled, waist like broken, thigh stiffness and spine pain, urinary retention like knotting or tearing, An Jue with tendon injury. Suo Zhi includes malaria, hemorrhoids, useless little toe, vertex/neck pain, yellow eyes, lower back/hip/leg pain connected to back, tearing nosebleed, and epilepsy.
The Kidney Meridian has much Qi and little Blood. Shi Dong includes hunger without desire to eat, panting/cough with bloody sputum, throat ringing, wanting to sit up, dirty face, blurred vision, insufficient Qi, hanging heart like hunger with palpitations. Suo Sheng includes dry tongue, hot mouth, sore throat, rushing Qi, pain in posterior medial thigh and spine, heart/intestinal vexation, jaundice, atrophy/Jue, lethargy, hot painful feet, all bone Jue.
The Pericardium has little Qi originally and much Blood. Shi Dong includes hot palms, spasms of elbow/arm, axillary swelling, chest/hypochondriac fullness/knotting, palpitations or large movements, laughter, yellow eyes, red face. Suo Sheng includes vexation, heart pain, hot palms.
The Sanjiao has little Blood and much Qi. Shi Dong includes tinnitus, throat swelling/bi. Suo Sheng includes spontaneous sweating, pain behind ear and outer canthus, pain in lateral shoulder/elbow/arm, useless ring and little fingers.
The Gallbladder Meridian has much Qi and little Blood. Shi Dong includes bitter taste, frequent sighing, difficult hypochondriac pain, dusty face, hot feet, lack luster. Suo Sheng includes headache connecting to outer canthus, swelling/pain in suprapubic region and axillae, scrofula on sides, sweating with chills/malaria, pain from chest/hip/knee to ankle bones, fibula/ankle/joint pain.
The Liver Meridian has much Blood and little Qi. Shi Dong includes difficulty bending/stretching due to waist pain, male hernia, female lower abdominal swelling, dusty/desaturated face, dry throat. Suo Sheng includes chest fullness, vomiting, profuse diarrhea, difficult urination, enuresis, fox hernia. Clinical practice requires careful observation. (Wang Ji notes: The classic states for Shi Dong and Suo Sheng diseases: tonify deficiency, sedate excess, hasten heat, retain cold, moxa sinking, treat via the meridian if neither excess nor deficiency. Excess: Cun Kou pulse is three times larger than Ren Ying. Deficiency: Cun Kou is smaller than Ren Ying. I collected pulse diagnosis and color observation first, then meridian diseases later, hoping students will be comprehensive to avoid bias and killing out of ignorance, perhaps avoiding divine retribution.)
