The five Zang organs correspond to the six Fu organs, and the six Fu organs have twelve Yuan-source points. These twelve Yuan-source points emerge from the "Four Passes" (Sìguān) located at the elbows and knees, and they govern diseases of the five Zang organs. When diseases occur in the five Zang organs, one should select these twelve Yuan-source points for treatment. The so-called twelve Yuan-source points are where the Qi of the five Zang organs receives and distributes the essence from the three hundred and sixty-five acupoints. When diseases arise in the five Zang organs, their pathological changes manifest at the twelve Yuan-source points, each having its specific location: For the Lung, a Shaoyin organ within Yang, its Yuan-source point emerges from Taiyuan (LU-9); for the Heart, a Taiyang organ within Yang, its Yuan-source point emerges from Daling (PC-7); for the Liver, a Shaoyang organ within Yin, its Yuan-source point emerges from Taichong (LR-3); for the Spleen, a Zhìyīn organ within Yin, its Yuan-source point emerges from Taibai (SP-3); for the Kidney, a Taiyin organ within Yin, its Yuan-source point emerges from Taixi (KI-3). The source of the Gao (膏, deep fat/marrow) emerges from Jiutui (CV-15), and the source of the Huang (肓, diaphragm/abdominal cavity) emerges from Qihai (CV-6). These twelve Yuan-source points treat diseases of the five Zang and six Fu organs (Ling Shu). ○ The "Four Passes" refer to Hegu (LI-4) and Taichong (LR-3). The Yuan-source points of the twelve meridians all emerge from the Four Passes (Ru Men).
There are twenty-five Yuan-source points for the five Zang organs and thirty-six He-sea points for the six Fu organs. Together with Shangjuxu (ST-37) and Xiajuxu (BL-39), there are sixty-four essential and crucial points. When diseases affect the Zang and Fu organs, these sixty-four points can all be used for treatment. Among them, Taiyuan (LU-9), Daling (PC-7), Taichong (LR-3), Taibai (SP-3), and Taixi (KI-3) are the Yuan-source points of the five Zang organs; Zusanli (ST-36), Shangjuxu (ST-37), Xiajuxu (BL-39), Weizhong (BL-40), Weiyang (BL-39), and Yanglingquan (GB-34) are the He-sea points of the six Fu organs. These are the most crucial among the crucial points and are what physicians must master first (Zang organs have twenty-five points, Fu organs have thirty-six He-sea points, totaling sixty-one points; adding Weiyang, Shanglian, and Xialian makes sixty-four points) (Gang Mu).
The Yellow Emperor asked: Do Ying-spring points and He-sea points have distinct names? Qibo replied: Ying-spring points treat disorders of the exterior meridians, while He-sea points treat disorders of the interior Fu organs. The Yellow Emperor asked again: What are the specific names of the He-sea points? Qibo said: The He-sea point of the Stomach enters Zusanli (ST-36); the He-sea point of the Large Intestine enters Shangjuxu (ST-37); the He-sea point of the Small Intestine enters Xiajuxu (BL-39). These three Fu organs belong to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The He-sea point of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) enters Weiyang (BL-39); the He-sea point of the Bladder enters Weizhong (BL-40). These two Fu organs belong to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. The He-sea point of the Gallbladder enters Yanglingquan (GB-34). This one Fu organ belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. The Yellow Emperor asked: How should these points be accessed? Qibo said: To access Zusanli (ST-36), depress the dorsum of the foot to locate it; to access Shangjuxu and Xiajuxu, elevate the foot to locate them; to access Weiyang, flex and extend the leg to search for it; to access Weizhong, flex the knee to locate it; to access Yanglingquan, sit upright with knees vertical, locating it below the navel towards the Yang side of Weiyang (Ling Shu).
