Women's pregnancy disorders are often caused by emotional fluctuations (anger and joy) or fatigue and injury, which disturb the fetal qi, leading to attacking pain in the heart and abdomen, or due to contraction of wind-cold. If panting and coughing occur, treatment should prioritize regulating qi. The herbs should include Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Suosha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), with Wumei (Mume Fructus) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) as assistants. If panting is severe, resolving phlegm and dispelling cold is key; the main herbs should be Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), and Wumei (Mume Fructus).
Modern people only know Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) as a holy herb for securing the fetus and do not use Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) or Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), fearing their cooling nature may be harmful, using only warm herbs to secure the fetus. Little do they know that taking cooling herbs during pregnancy can make blood circulate within the meridians without reckless flow; when blood harmonizes, the fetus secures itself naturally. Moreover, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) can clear fire from the upper, middle, and lower jiao. Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) can broaden the chest, unblock the diaphragm, resolve stagnation, and regulate qi; Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) can strengthen the spleen and generate blood, proving effective in every trial. Generally, various fetal disorders contraindicate herbs that move qi. Danxi said: Yimucao (Leonuri Herba) is good at treating pre- and post-natal diseases. If a pregnant woman has blood stasis like a plate, harsh purgative herbs are difficult to tolerate; one may use Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Haishi (Pumex), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).
To treat threatened miscarriage bleeding: Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix), Huai Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), decocted and taken orally, will cure.
Securing the Fetus Formula: Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Haishi (Pumex).
To treat continuous bleeding in pregnant women: [Missing Character] Zi (seeds) several pieces, taken hot with good wine.
To treat qi and blood unrest in pregnant women: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, small amount), Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), decocted and taken.
To treat fetal movement due to fatigue injury: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), decocted and taken for immediate effect.
When a woman's fetal qi is disharmonious, turning to attack the heart causing distension and pain, it is named "Zi Xuan" (Fetal Distension): Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium), Suye (Perillae Folium), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
If the fetus falls halfway, it is all due to maternal blood deficiency and weak kidney failing to nourish the fetus. Treatment should use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), modified according to symptoms. If the fetal qi is excessively hot and restless leading to abortion, use Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) to clear heat and regulate qi. If fetal movement and restlessness due to injury threaten abortion, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to warm and tonify. If a pregnant woman experiences miscarriage at one month or abortion at three to five months, preventive treatment must be started before the month; if medication at the time is ineffective...
To treat excessive heat and restlessness: Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). For deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
To treat lower back and abdominal pain with bleeding: Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex).
Differentiating critical pulse signs for childbirth: Pulse stringy, tight, firm, strong, and slippery indicates safety; deep, fine, and faint indicates death.
Observing facial features: Red and black complexion in women indicates childbirth; lips and teeth not closing indicates obstruction. Yellow complexion indicates safe pregnancy. Black-purple color at the philtrum indicates a female baby. Cyan color on the left side of the pregnant woman's face indicates a male; red on the right indicates a female. If cyan color invades from the left into the mouth and ear, expect death in the seventh month; if cyan color invades from the right into the mouth, expect a male, which can be verified immediately.
For women who dislike having many children and wish to abort, hot herbs to invigorate blood and Shexiang (Moschus) to open orifices are required. The formula follows.
Abortion Formula: Mengchong (Bombyx Batryticatus - *Note: Text says 虻虫 Tabanus*), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Sumu (Sappan Lignum), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chuan Gui Dangshen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus), Banmao (Myodes Blatta - *Note: Text says 斑蝥 Mylabris*), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Pengze (Curcumae Rhizoma), Guijian Dawang (Armillariae Stipes). Taken with hot wine. There is a formula using Shuiyin (Mercurius) to abort, but since it is cold in nature, it may cause abdominal pain later; do not use lightly.
Simple Prescription: Use Xi Luosi (River Snail), one per month, crushed and placed in a box to induce abortion.
Another Formula: Wannianqing Gen (Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati), crushed for juice, mixed with wine and taken.
Another Formula: Huangjing Shugen (Radix Viticis Negundo), slightly crushed, wrapped in cotton, inserted into the vagina to induce abortion.
Another Formula: Taoren (Persicae Semen), Guchui Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae), and Shexiang (Moschus) ground into powder, wrapped in cotton, inserted into the vagina to induce abortion overnight.
Labor Induction Formula: Bai Dan Shuang, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), avoid fire, ground into powder. At labor, take 2 qian with child's urine and rice vinegar soup, taken hot. If ineffective, take one or two more doses; also treats metrorrhagia.
Simple Prescription: For difficult labor due to trauma or fright injuring blood vessels, causing abdominal pain and retention, no discharge, dry birth canal. Method: Place husband's garment on the wellhead for immediate delivery.
Verifying Fetal Life or Death: If the fetus is dead, check the mother's tongue. A cyan tongue indicates a dead fetus; if not removed, it will endanger the mother's life. Take Xiong Gui Tang (Chuanxiong and Angelica Decoction) plus Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) to warm the fetus. If foaming from the mouth, it is untreatable.
To treat retained dead fetus: Use Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 2 qian, Shexiang (Moschus) 5 fen, ground into powder, taken with wine to expel. However, Shexiang (Moschus) strongly opens orifices; if taken by women, future conception may be difficult. This is a last resort; do not treat casually.
Retained Placenta: Retained placenta is often due to excessive effort, fatigue, and blood deficiency preventing expulsion. First, cut the umbilical cord and pad with straw shoes; if chilled, support the woman to bed, sit leaning against someone, cover with blankets and apply heat, changing warm clothes for the abdomen, avoiding wind exposure. After expulsion, guard against deficiency; do not use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) in medication.
Postpartum High Fever: Danxi said: Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) can remove postpartum fever. Why? Postpartum fever arises from internal deficiency generating heat. Ginger regulates lung qi, harmonizes the middle, and guides yin-substance herbs; thus used infinitely effectively in yin-tonifying formulas. Do not overuse; even roasted ginger retains residual heat if used excessively, damaging the lungs. Lung heat and toxins transform into fire syndromes, making chronic conditions hard to cure in women.
Postpartum Blood Syncope: Dim vision, dizziness, unconsciousness are all due to failed blood flowing into the liver meridian, combined with heat qi taking advantage of deficiency to rush upward to the heart. Medicine should focus on clearing heat and regulating.
Childlessness: Many obese women with excess fat have blocked uteruses unable to conceive. Use Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) to dispel cold-phlegm. Impatient women may injure the Chong and Ren meridians, causing menstrual disorder and qi accumulation, unable to conceive. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) to cool blood, descend fire, and tonify yin.
Cold and exhaustion of the lower jiao, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, irregular menstruation, and infertility require Liuhuang (Sulfur), Yuliangshi (Kaolinite), Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Piaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) to warm the lower origin.
To terminate pregnancy: Use 1 sheng white flour and 5 sheng good wine, decoct to 2 sheng, strain, divide into 3-4 doses. Take one dose late evening before menstruation, early next morning, and at wu geng (3-5 AM); prevents conception.
Virginal menstrual stagnation, abdominal and hypochondriac fullness, blood and qi rushing upward, dizziness and unconsciousness require Danpi (Moutan Cortex) to dissipate.
Another Formula: Liuji Nu (Artemisiae Anomfoliae Herba), Mudan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Yuanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Pengze (Curcumae Rhizoma), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex).

Irregular menstruation in virgins: Male rat feces 1 liang, roasted, mixed with warm wine, 1 qian taken for immediate effect.
Another Formula: Lianfangke (Lotus Capsule Shell) burned to ash, Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica) ground to powder, 3 qian per dose, taken with rice soup.
Postpartum women have both qi and blood deficiency; although there are miscellaneous symptoms, do not use exterior-releasing methods, nor Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), fearing its sour and cold nature destroys vital qi.
Postpartum blood syncope is often due to deficient fire carrying blood upward, failed blood entering the liver meridian, causing fainting and unconsciousness. Immediately use chives, finely cut, placed in a spouted bottle, pour boiling vinegar inside, seal the large mouth, place the spout at the patient's nose for immediate awakening.
Another Formula: Put white charcoal fire in a bottle first, or dry lacquer/lacquerware into fire, add good vinegar into the bottle, use as above; after awakening, administer medicine.
Postpartum continuous bleeding is treated as metrorrhagia. If sweating is profuse, take Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to tonify qi.
Lochia not fully expelled causing lower abdominal pain: Take Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Lingzhi (Pollen Typhae), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Yuanhu (Corydalis Rhizoma); if food stagnation, add Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus).
Postpartum pulse should be deep and fine; floating, large, stringy, and long pulses are contraindicated.
Postpartum damp-heat in the triple burner causing diarrhea and abdominal pain: Use 5 qian fried red yeast rice, made into pills with rice, add 1 liang Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces), followed by spleen-strengthening and blood-tonifying medicine.
One or two days postpartum, fever and headache: Use Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus).

During the second to third or fifth to sixth month of pregnancy, confusion and uncertainty often arise due to seven emotions injuring the stomach, generating damp-phlegm, which seeps into the bladder, occupying the blood sea, blocking qi circulation, preventing fetal movement. Also, menstrual blood stasis flowing into the bladder causes alternating fever and loss of appetite. Disharmony of Ying and Wei, blood depletion and amenorrhea generate phlegm-fire bloating. Abdominal pain is slight, resembling pregnancy, but unknown is that fire accumulates in the Dantian, yang transmits to yin, lower jiao is deficient and exhausted, unable to generate blood. Thus, moving pain is due to fire. After three to four months of pregnancy, fatigue injuries damage qi and blood, failing to protect and nourish the growing fetus, preventing movement. Only skilled physicians carefully palpate the pulse to probe for pregnancy before prescribing. Use 2 liang Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and 2 liang Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), decocted in wine; if slight movement is felt, take one or two more doses.
Constipation is often due to depression generating phlegm-heat accumulating in the zang-fu. Heart, small intestine, and bladder are connected; if yin-yang are not harmonized and heart-kidney do not interact, transport fails, causing heat excess and blockage in water pathways. Treatment should clear heart qi using Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huashi (Talcum), Fuling (Poria), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix). Another Formula: Bazheng San (Eight-Herb Corrective Powder) is best.
A current syndrome named "Zhuan Bao" (Turning Bladder): Women cannot urinate after sleep due to intercourse, pleasure, or fatigue, turning the bladder so urine cannot exit, causing lower abdominal fullness and qi rushing to both hypochondria. Medication is ineffective; urgently use a midwife to correct the fetus position, then it resolves. Danxi's "Zuanyao" has a formula using White-headed Earthworms, crushed into paste, taken with wine. Another Formula: Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), decocted and taken. Official medicine origins seen previously.
Lower abdomen distended like swelling: Use rust nails ground in rice soup, taken on an empty stomach.
Ancient Formula: Stack a little salt (fried) in the navel, moxa 100 cones, resolves spontaneously.
Dribbling stranguria is due to depression accumulating in zang-fu, damp-heat seeping into the bladder, turning white, painful stasis unbearable. Pulse says: Small intestine is the official of reception; bladder and kidney combine to form fluids. Ancient texts: Stranguria and closure are Long; inability to retain is Yi; dribbling and涩痛 is Lin; lower abdominal fullness without pain is Bi. Thus, bladder is the fu organ, draining connects with the small intestine. If heart and kidney interact, upper and lower connect, water pathways open and close, this syndrome would not exist. Stranguria has many types: Heat Lin, Blood Lin, Qi Lin, Deficiency Lin, treated differently. Bright color indicates heart and small intestine heat; dark color indicates kidney and bladder deficiency/exhaustion. Some drops are unbearable, not due to deficiency heat; heat uses cooling. Cold/deficiency uses warming and tonifying qi, using Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Mendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Fuling (Poria), Husuo (Corydalis Rhizoma).
Urinary incontinence: Kidney governs water and bladder, being the urine gate; heat causes blockage, cold causes frequent urination. Pregnant women with frequent urination are due to kidney meridian deficiency-cold; or during labor, straining injures the bladder, allowing cold pathogen to enter internally. Treatment uses Pugu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) in warming agents. Another Formula: Baiweiqi (Rosa Rugosa) and Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), taken with warm wine.
