The Spleen is the head of all Yin meridians and governs the blood of the entire body. In terms of Qi mechanism, it belongs to Middle Qi (Zhong Qi); in the Five Zang organs relationship, it is the son of the Heart. The upper eyelid belongs to the Spleen, and the lower eyelid belongs to the Stomach.
Upper Eyelid
Red granules growing internally are named "Fish Roe Pomegranate" (Yuzi Shiliu); red masses growing internally are named "Chicken Comb Clam Meat" (Jiguan Xianrou). Both belong to Wind-Heat pathogenic factors, stagnating in the Taiyin meridian, causing condensation of Qi and Blood. Phlegm nodules growing within the eyelid, located between the skin and the fascia, resembling cherries or plums, result from Qi stagnation and dryness condensation; one must guard against the risk of becoming warts. Sores at the Jingming (BL1) acupoint are named "Eye Carbuncle" (Yanyong); if they persist for a long time and form fistulas, they are named "Leaking Eye" (Loujing), belonging to the failure of Sunyang meridian stagnant heat to disperse. Eyelid eversion with adhesion to the lid margin belongs to Yangming Stomach Fire. Flesh granules growing on the upper eyelid are named "Stealing Needle" (Touzhen); flesh granules growing on the lower eyelid are named "Eye Dan" (Yandan). Swelling and pain belong to Wind stagnation transforming into Fire; lack of swelling/pain with intermittent onset belongs to labor damaging the Heart and Spleen, with Liver Wood overacting on Earth, indicating a Deficiency syndrome. Upper eyelid laxity and widening, with inverted cilia and redness/swelling, belong to Spleen and Lung Qi deficiency with concomitant Wind; lack of redness/pain belongs to sinking of Middle Qi. Lower eyelid tightness and urgency, with inverted cilia turning inward, belong to Liver Wind overacting on the Stomach. Fungus-like growths internally in the lower eyelid belong to Yangming Damp-Fire. Tinea growing on both eyelids: wet erosion belongs to Wind, scorching/dryness belongs to Fire, dryness/astringency belongs to Dryness, and pustules belong to Dampness. However, there are cases where Wind combines with Dryness, Fire combines with Wind, and Dampness combines with Heat; various symptoms should be carefully differentiated.
The Kidney is the Official of Vigor, from which skill and dexterity emerge. It corresponds to the Gui Water of the North, nourishing Liver Wood to control Fire, and enriching the vessels and blood. Stars appearing internally within the pupil indicate pathogenic factors stagnating in Kidney Yin. Scattered vision like five chaotic stars, with blurred vision, indicates Water being counter-controlled by Fire, occurring in both Excess and Deficiency patterns. A small pupil indicates Fire combusting Kidney Water-Yin. A dilated pupil indicates Qi failing to envelop Essence. A white pupil results from the drying up of the Kidney Water source. Redness filling the black cornea is named "Rouge Internal Cataract" (Yanzhi Neizhang), belonging to Minister Fire floating upward, unable to be controlled by Water. If the pupil also turns red, it is named "Blood Pouring into the Pupil" (Xueguan Tongshen), which is incurable. A white, trembling pupil indicates an established internal cataract, also incurable. A golden-yellow pupil indicates excessive Fire and exhausted Water, also incurable. Seeing flying sparks indicates non-interaction between Heart and Kidney. Seeing eyes full of fireflies indicates disharmony between Liver and Kidney. Seeing chaotic white stars indicates Qi deficiency of Lung and Kidney. Seeing vast black flowers indicates failure of Kidney Yang to store. Seeing white as yellow, red as purple, straight as crooked, and stationary objects as moving, along with dizziness when opening the eyes, constitutes the syndrome of "Extreme Yin and Flying Yang" (Jiyin Yangfei). A pupil of normal size and color (neither white nor red), but with the extinction of the Three Lights (San Guang - referring to the luster of the pupil, cornea, and sclera), constitutes true "Green Blindness" (Qingmang), which is considered incurable. All the above items are syndromes of loss of essence and blood nourishment. Indeed, since Water is generated by Tianyi (One of Heaven), it is essential to nourish it; when Water is sufficient and Essence is abundant, eye diseases will naturally heal.
