Question: Why do eye discharge and tears become viscous, thick, and flow incessantly?
Answer: This is due to Lung Qi deficiency. The Lung is constrained by the pathogenic heat of Heart Fire; Metal (Lung) weakens under the influence of Fire (Fire overcomes Metal), resulting in incessant discharge of eye secretions and tears. One should first administer Aijian Wan (Mugwort Decoction Pills) to eliminate pathogenic heat from the Lung and Large Intestine meridians in the Tiankuo region (referring to the area surrounding the eyes), followed by the use of Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) for tonification.
Aijian Wan (Mugwort Decoction Pills)
High-quality Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, steamed with vinegar and dried), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Wan Can Sha (Bombyx Batryticatus, i.e., silkworm excrement), Nuo Mi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Mian Huang Qi (Astragali Radix).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder and form pills with refined honey. Take fifteen pills per dose after meals, washed down with Sangbaipi Decoction or Bo He Decoction.
Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder)
E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, stir-fried with蛤粉 [Gaviae Testa]), Shu Niu Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Nuo Mi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen, 1 liang), Ma Dou Ling (Aristolochiae Fructus), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos), Zi Wan (Adenophorae Radix) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 6 qian per dose, decocted in water.
Question: Why does a person suffer from constant tearing from the white part of the eye, redness and swelling with hot discharge, and incessant flow of tears?
Answer: This is caused by Excess Heat in the Lung. The Lung belongs to Metal; Metal generates Water. When Metal is prosperous, Water overflows. Tears are fundamentally connected to the Liver but also represent the essence of the Lung. Due to Excess Heat in the Lung meridian, eye discharge and tears flow incessantly. Treatment requires the use of Xiefei Tang (Decoction to Drain the Lung) to drain Excess Heat from the Lung meridian, followed by the administration of Shengwei Jinhua Wan (Pills of Golden Flowers with Reduced Flavor) to regulate Lung Fire. This will facilitate smooth conduction in the Large Intestine, ensure patency of the Tiankuo eye meridians, eliminate ascending fire, and result in clear, bright eyes without excessive discharge or tearing.
Xiefei Tang (Decoction to Drain the Lung)
Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Take 5 qian of the above ingredients per dose and decoct in water.
Shengwei Jinhua Wan (Pills of Golden Flowers with Reduced Flavor)
Chuan Huang Bai (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex, 2 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 1 liang), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (5 qian).
Form pills with refined honey. Take fifty pills per dose, washed down with Sangbaipi Decoction or Bo He Decoction.
