[Diagram of Red Clouds Reflecting the Sun]
Q: Why do some people suffer from red, dry, swollen, and painful eyes, and after many years, develop a red nebula on the cornea (black pupil), with copious tears resembling red clouds reflecting the sun?
A: This is caused by accumulated heat in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and wind-heat attacking upward from the Liver and Diaphragm. Treatment requires herbs that dispel wind, dissipate blood stasis, and clear heat.
Xiu Gan San (Liver-Cultivating Powder): Treats stagnant Liver Qi.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus).
Take equal parts of each, decoct in water, and take orally.
Bo Yun San (Cloud-Dispelling Powder):
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Mimenghua (Gastrodiae Rhizoma - *Note: Traditionally refers to Gastrodia or similar, often interpreted as Gastrodiae Rhizoma or specific flower; WHO standard for 密蒙花 is Buddlejae Flos*), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus).
Decoct in water and take after meals.
Jiawei Xiu Gan San (Modified Liver-Cultivating Powder)
[Diagram of Morning Pain]
Q: Why does pain occur from morning until noon?
A: From morning to noon, Yang Qi is vigorous. This is due to deficient Yang attacking upward and Head Wind invading. The head is the meeting place of all Yang meridians. When the body moves in the morning, blood circulation accelerates, and Yang Fire turns toward the head, clashing with Wind Qi.
For morning pain [in the eyes/head], it is advisable to take Chuanxiong San or Baijili San.
Chuanxiong San (Ligusticum Powder):
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 5 qian), Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Digupi (Lycii Cortex).
Take equal parts, decoct in water, and take orally.
Baijili San (Tribulus Powder)
[Diagram of Afternoon Pain]
Q: Why do eye ailments worsen with increasing pain from afternoon into night?
A: This is due to deficiency in the Brain and excess of Yang Toxin. In the human body, blood travels through the Yin meridians in the afternoon and returns to the governance of the Liver at night. Given the deficiency in the Brain and excess of Yang Toxin, pain and blurred vision gradually increase in the afternoon. Treatment requires Hu Yang Tang, followed by Ye Guang Liu Hong Wan. It is advisable to take:
Hu Yang Tang (Restore Yang Decoction): Treats pale red eyeballs and photophobia with difficulty opening the eyes. Take:
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Fuling (Poria), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
For each dose, take one jujube and three slices of ginger, decoct in water, and take on an empty stomach.
Ye Guang Liu Hong Wan (Night-Luminous Willow-Red Pill): Treats Liver injury by Wind-Dampness.
