Throat Bi (throat obstruction) is caused by wind-toxic qi invading and lodging in the throat, binding with blood and qi to form swelling and blockage. It prevents the swallowing of water and food; in severe cases, it suppurates and ulcerates, a condition named Chan Hou Feng (Coiling Throat Wind).
If the toxin attacks the heart and abdomen, death ensues; if it attacks the heart, it causes mental restlessness and distress (Men Ao), and the presence of Men Ao leads to death. Alternatively, it may manifest as single or double Ru E (tonsillar hypertrophy), which is a critical condition mostly belonging to Phlegm-Heat. Initially, an emetic method should be used; in severe cases, acupuncture can be employed to release toxic blood, followed by the administration of Gan Jie Tang.
Gan Jie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction)
Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi), Yuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Jing Jie (Herba Schizonepetae).
Children have weak Spleen and Stomach, and their Cou Li (interstices/skin pores) are loose. Summer-heat qi enters through the deficiency, presenting symptoms similar to Convulsive Wind (Jing Feng). Xiang Ru Yin (Mosla Decoction) or Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification) are suitable, both can be taken with Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder).
The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior related. The anus is the gate of the Large Intestine. Excess-Heat in the Lung Meridian leads to constipation and blockage; if the Lung is deficient and cold, the rectum may prolapse. Some cases result from prolonged diarrhea and dysentery causing Spleen Earth deficiency, failing to generate Lung Metal, thus causing anal prolapse that cannot retract. Treatment should focus on tonifying the Spleen and warming the Stomach, allowing Lung Metal to benefit from its mother (Spleen) so that Qi becomes solid. Subsequently, internal administration of intestinal-astringent agents and external application of washing medicines are indicated.
Fu Gang San (Poultice for Anus)
Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), Chi Shi Zhi (Halloysit Rubra), He Zi Rou (Endocarpus Chebulae) (each 3 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Apply 4-5 fen each time to the affected area, three times daily until healed. First, wash the area with a decoction of Jing Jie Sui (Ament of Schizonepetae) and Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi).
Another prescription: Ash of Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis) and ash of Bie Tou (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis head), applied externally, yields excellent results. Use a clean old shoe sole, heated, to support the prolapsed part back up.
Children possess pure Yang constitution, with hot blood and qi, making them prone to Heat syndromes. If there is Heat in the Five Zang organs, it manifests as heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), high fever in the four limbs, abundant phlegm-saliva, dry eyes, and excessive thirst. If the heat rushes upward to the throat, it binds with blood and qi to form Hou Bi (throat closure), treated with Liang Ge San.
Liang Ge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder)
Shan Zhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Bo He (Herba Menthae), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Yuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Hua Fen (Radix Bletillae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhu Ye (Leaf of Bambusa).
In severe cases, Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) can be added, or only Da Huang is added.
These jaundices are all due to damp-heat steaming within the Spleen and Stomach, resembling a face covered with dust. The Spleen corresponds to Earth, whose color is yellow, hence the manifestation externally. Jaundice appearing immediately after birth is called Tai Dan (Fetal Jaundice), caused by maternal organ heat steaming the fetus. If Yellow Jaundice transforms into Black Jaundice, it is difficult to treat. The treatment of Dan (jaundice) focuses primarily on promoting urination; when urine flow improves, the yellow color naturally recedes. If caused by Food Stagnation, digestive-resolving methods can also be used, adding food-stagnation resolving herbs to the formula.
Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Host), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Zhu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae), Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii), Shan Zhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Shan Zha (Fructus Crataegi), Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis).
Use heavy doses of Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Bing Lang (Areca Seed).
