[Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus)]
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Lung, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Stomach, and Bladder meridians. It primarily treats pathogenic heat within the five zang organs, fluid depletion due to blood loss, redness of the face and eyes, carbuncles and sores, the five types of jaundice (Wuzhong Huangbing), opens depression, drains fire, treats mental restlessness and insomnia characterized by a feeling of stifling oppression in the chest, and treats difficulty in urination caused by blood stasis below the umbilicus. The peel clears heat from the skin and muscles, while the seed clears heat from the heart and chest; it resolves toxicity from *Rhododendron molle* (Yangzhizhu) and insect bites.
Commentary: Shanzhi is bitter and enters the Heart meridian; its light and floating nature corresponds to the Lung meridian. Upon entering the intestines, it serves as the transmission assistant for the Lung. The Small Intestine receives and transforms substances and corresponds to the Heart. The Stomach is also a fu organ of the Upper Jiao, and the Bladder is also constrained by the Lung meridian; thus, it enters all these meridians to regulate various pathogenic heat syndromes. Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) stated: "Its nature is light, clear, and ascends." Danxi (Zhu Zhenheng) further stated: "It bends and descends." These two theories seem contradictory. However, it is precisely because it ascends that it can best clear the Lungs. When Lung Qi is clear and transforms properly, urine is excreted through qi transformation. As the Classics state: "The Bladder stores fluids; only through qi transformation can they be excreted." This refers to this mechanism. For deficiency fire flaring upward, use charred Shanzhi. For irritability, depression, vomiting, and counterflow, use ginger-juice fried Shanzhi; otherwise, raw administration is suitable.
Leigong said: When using, do not use large grains, which are called "Fu" (dormant/weak). Effective Shanzhi must resemble a sparrow's brain, be long with nine ridges, and have a reddish color, which is considered superior. When processing, first remove the peel and take out the seeds. Soak them in licorice water overnight, drain, dry by roasting, crush, and sieve into a golden powder for use.
[Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus)]
Bitter and acrid in taste, hot in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the Liver, Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, and Kidney meridians. It primarily directs qi downward, resolves phlegm, treats dysphagia caused by cold qi, stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, cholera with muscle spasms, foot disease attacking the heart, stops cough and counterflow, expels wind pathogens, digests retained food, and removes blood bi. It should be processed with salt water decoction to reduce toxicity. *Polygonum multiflorum* fruit (Liaoshi) is used as an adjuvant. It is incompatible with *Salvia miltiorrhiza* root (Danshen), Niter (Xiaoshi), and Kaolin (Baie); it fears Fluorite (Ziyingshi).
Commentary: Wuzhuyu is an acrid and hot agent, suitable for entering the five meridians to regulate cold syndromes. Excessive consumption severely damages primordial qi; it is contraindicated for those with weak intestines.
Leigong said: When processing, first remove leaves and stems, discard impurities, and collect the fruits. Use two large basins, wash with salt water one hundred times until the sticky substance naturally disappears. Sun-dry, then it can be freely used in pills and powders. To process ten taels of material, use two taels of salt, grind into powder, throw into flowing eastward water, stir four times over one hundred cycles of washing, which yields great efficacy. If boiled with vinegar...
