This is also a syndrome of internal heat generated due to Yin deficiency caused by excessive blood loss. The Kidney (Shen) is the organ of extreme Yin, governing the water pathways. Excessive blood loss during childbirth depletes the True Yin; when Kidney Water is insufficient, Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo, hyperactive Yang fire within the body) becomes more severe, thus generating internal heat. This leads to strangury (Lin Zheng, painful and difficult urination) with astringency and pain. Use Modified Dao Chi San: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, peeled), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each 2 qian.
Hematuria accompanied by lower abdominal pain indicates that retained blood (Bai Xue, necrotic blood) has flowed into the Bladder; if there is no lower abdominal pain but only a sense of emptiness and pain during urination, it is due to internal heat. Both conditions are treated with Xiao Ji Tang: Xiao Ji Gen (Cirsii Herba), Sheng Di Huang, Chi Shao Yao, Mu Tong, Pu Huang (Typhonii Pollen), Gan Cao Gao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, tip), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), each 1 qian; Hua Shi (Talcum) 2 qian; Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) 49 cun. Decoct in water and take orally. If retained blood is present, add Dang Gui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, tail) and Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), each 1 qian. If accompanied by internal heat, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), each 1 qian.
After childbirth, Qi and Blood, as well as the meridians and collaterals, are all deficient. If Yin Ju (Yin Abscess, a type of ulcer with diffuse swelling, no head, and unchanged skin color) occurs, it is a most dangerous condition. It is essential to greatly tonify and support the root, while simultaneously promoting blood circulation to remove stasis and generate new tissue. For other symptoms, powder medicines should be used; the properties of the drugs should be pure, benign, and mild. Harsh diaphoretic or purgative agents are strictly contraindicated. For severe cases, Jiang Yong Huo Ming Yin (see formulas for carbuncles and toxins) is the most miraculous. For mild cases, follow...
He Ji'an said: Hui Sheng Dan is an immortal formula for protecting childbirth. A few years ago, someone prepared this medicine to distribute to others. Every woman who took one pill before delivery delivered smoothly and comfortably, though they did not realize its efficacy at the time. However, it is heard that when preparing the medicine, one must first observe fasting and purity of heart, make a vow to save all beings universally, then choose a clean room and proceed according to the method. My fellow student Ma Yu KT studied medical texts and found that only *Wan Bing Hui Chun* contains it. The record states: "This is the empirical formula of Sun Kuitai from Changge, which still lacks some aspects compared to the formula I transmitted." The treatment method requires using decoctions as guides. Hui Sheng Dan: Specifically treats various diseases after childbirth, with effects as if divine. Jin Wen Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 1 jin is ground into powder; Su Mu (Sappan Lignum) 3 liang (crushed and ground, use five bowls of river water, decoct to obtain three bowls of juice for later use); Da Hei Dou (Sojae Semen Nigrum) 3 sheng (soak in water, remove the husks, place the husks in a silk bag, cook together with the beans, discard the beans, dry the husks).
First, put one jin of Da Huang powder into a clean pot, add three jin of rice vinegar, simmer over a gentle fire, stirring constantly with a long wooden chopstick until it becomes a paste. Then add another three jin of vinegar and continue simmering, followed by another three jin of vinegar, adding them sequentially. After all vinegar is added, pour in three bowls of Hei Dou juice and simmer again, then add Su Mu juice and simmer, followed by Hong Hua juice, until Da Huang paste is formed. Take out and store in a earthenware basin (scrape off any Da Huang burnt to the bottom of the pot and mix it with the subsequent herbs for grinding).
Additionally, use Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Tai Shen (Codonopsis Radix, equivalent to Dang Shen) each 2 liang; Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, washed with wine), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried with vinegar), Yuan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma, stir-fried with vinegar), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in ginger juice and roasted in fire), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, bran-fried), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, earth-fried) each 2 liang 5 qian.
Grind together a thousand times with a mortar to form honey pills, each weighing slightly over 2 qian.
Case 1: Fetus died in the womb, caused by the mother contracting a febrile disease. Use Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) 1 qian decocted in water to dissolve and administer one or two pills. If taken up to three pills, the fetus will inevitably be expelled. If the fetus died due to premature bleeding, use Tai Shen 3 qian (or Ren Shen 1 qian is better), Che Qian Zi 1 qian, decoct in water and take orally. Alternatively, use a small amount of aged yellow wine mixed with Che Qian Zi decoction.
Case 2: Retained placenta. Use a small amount of fried salt dissolved in water to dissolve and administer one, or two to three pills. The placenta will fall immediately.
Case 3: Syncope due to blood loss after delivery. Use Bo He Tang (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba decoction) to dissolve and administer one pill. The patient will wake up immediately.
The above situations occur at critical moments during labor. Even if famous doctors are present, they may be caught off guard. This pill can revive the dying and must be prepared in advance. Note: The original version of this pill included a line stating "taking it during labor facilitates birth," but according to famous doctors, it must absolutely not be used during pregnancy, and taking it during labor is also contraindicated; therefore, it was deleted.
Case 4: Three days postpartum, Qi and Blood are unstable. Blood qi returns to the Five Zang organs, rushing to the Liver. Syncope occurs with inability to start or stop, seeing black spots before the eyes. Administer this pill with boiling water, and the patient will recover.
Case 5: Seven days postpartum, Qi and Blood are unstable. Food and blood accumulate in the chest due to dietary issues, causing dry mouth, chest oppression, irritability, and thirst. Administer this pill with boiling water, and the patient will recover.
Case 6: Postpartum weakness. Blood enters the Heart and Lung; Heat enters the Spleen and Stomach. Chills and fever alternate resembling malaria, but it is not actually malaria. Administer this pill with boiling water, and the patient will recover.
Case 7: Postpartum retained blood flows through the Five Zang organs, filling the four limbs, stagnating and transforming into edema. Thirst is present, and the four limbs feel cold. This is blood edema, not deficiency edema. Administer this pill, and the patient will recover.
Case 8: Postpartum retained blood reaches extreme heat. The center is irritable, speech is manic and delirious, seeing ghosts and spirits. This is not wind pathogen. Administer this pill with boiling water, and the patient will recover.
Case 9: Postpartum retained blood flows into the heart orifice, causing blockage, loss of voice, and inability to speak. Use Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) 3 fen, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) 3 fen, decoct in water to dissolve and administer.
Case 10: Less than one month postpartum, mistakenly consumed sour, cold, and hard foods. These interact with the food, enter the Large Intestine, cannot be digested, leading to dysentery with pus and blood. Use Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) decocted in water to dissolve and administer.
Case 11: During delivery, the joints open wide, blood enters the meridians, and after staying for a long time, causes distension and soreness/aching. This is not a dampness syndrome. Use Su Geng (Perillae Caulis) 3 fen, decoct in water to dissolve and administer this pill, and the patient will recover.
Case 12: Within the first month postpartum, irregular diet combined with anger causes residual blood to flow into the Small Intestine, blocking the water pathways. Urination is astringent and constricted, urine contains blood resembling chicken liver. Use Mu Tong 4 fen, decoct in water to dissolve and administer this pill. Alternatively, if the blood flows into the Large Intestine, blocking the anus, causing constipation with clots resembling chicken liver, use Guang Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 3 fen, decoct in water to dissolve and administer this pill.
Case 13: Lochia has not finished, diet is not harmonized regarding cold and heat, leading to metrorrhagia resembling liver color, tidal fever, and spasms in the arms. Use Bai Zhu 3 fen, Guang Pi 2 fen, decoct in water to dissolve and administer this pill.
Case 14: Postpartum retained blood enters the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, spreading to the skin, muscles, and four limbs. Yellow complexion, dry mouth, epistaxis, and macules all over the body constitute a critical condition. Dissolve this pill in aged yellow wine and take orally to recover.
Case 15: Postpartum astringent urination, fecal impaction, alternating chills and fever, appearing drunk or dazed. Administer this pill dissolved in boiling water.
All the above cases are caused by the harm of postpartum retained blood. This pill has miraculous efficacy. As for all other abnormal conditions after childbirth, whether unmentioned by doctors or unprecedented by people, administering this pill will bring immediate stability. If one pill is ineffective, two or three pills will certainly be effective without doubt. It is also effective for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and primary amenorrhea in unmarried women.
