After childbirth, if there is tidal fever with sweating and constipation, do not exclusively diagnose it as Yangming disease (Yangming syndrome); if there is dry mouth and throat, do not exclusively diagnose it as Shaoyin disease (Shaoyin syndrome); if there is abdominal fullness, dry throat, and severe constipation, do not exclusively diagnose it as Taiyin disease (Taiyin syndrome). Furthermore, if there is profuse sweating accompanied by delirium, do not exclusively diagnose it as intestinal or stomachal conditions involving dry feces. This is mostly due to fatigue and overwork damaging the Spleen, causing slightly sluggish blood circulation, leading to exhaustion of Qi and Blood. It is a deficiency pattern presenting as an excess-like condition (pseudo-excess). Treatment should employ Yangzheng Tongyou Decoction (Nourish Righteousness and Unblock the Obscure Decoction). Do not stubbornly adhere to marginal approaches and recklessly prescribe Chengqi Decoctions (Gut-Purging Formulas), lest the patient's lips turn black and become incurable.
Yangzheng Tongyou Decoction (also known as Zhuxue Runchang Decoction): Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) 2.5 qian, Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao) 0.5 qian, Peach Kernel (Taoren) 5 grains, Cistanche Stem (Rongshu) 5 qian, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi)... [Note: Original text contains corrupted characters here].
Within seven days after childbirth, if there is fever, headache, and aversion to cold, do not exclusively diagnose it as Taiyang disease (Taiyang syndrome); if there is fever, headache, and body pain, do not exclusively diagnose it as Shaoyang disease (Shaoyang syndrome). Both conditions arise from dual deficiency of Qi and Blood and disharmony of Yin and Yang, manifesting as symptoms resembling external contraction. One must absolutely avoid using Mahuang Decoction (Ephedra Decoction) to treat Taiyang-like syndromes, nor use Chaihu Decoction (Bupleurum Decoction) to treat Shaoyang-like syndromes. This is because, following hemorrhage, inducing sweat further depletes Yang, leading to exhaustion of both Yin and Yang. The disaster of "deficiency compounding deficiency" is incalculable. Even if true Cold Damage (Shanghan) is contracted, the Chuanxiong and Ginger in Jiawei Shenghua Decoction can disperse cold. Moreover, once Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are harmonized, various diseases will recede naturally.
Jiawei Shenghua Decoction (Modified Birth-Generating Decoction): Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) each 2 qian, Charred Ginger (Tan Jiang) 0.5 qian, Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao) 0.5 qian, Peach Kernel (Taoren) 10 grains, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) 0.3 qian, Jujube (Zao) 2 pieces. Decoct in water, take warm, administer two doses consecutively. If wind-pathogen invasion is confirmed and symptoms persist after two doses, add Notopterygium Root (Qianghuo) 0.4 qian and Scallion White (Congbai) 4 cun. For vomiting, add Agastache Herb (Huoxiang) 0.3 qian and Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) 1 slice. If sweating is profuse with shortness of breath or slight panting, add Ginseng Root (Renshen) 2-3 qian. For thirst, use Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder). If there is alternating chills and fever with regular periodicity, add Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) 0.4 qian. For phlegm, add Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Juhong) and Trichosanthes Root (Huafen).
After childbirth, sudden exhaustion of Qi and Blood, with insufficient blood to nourish the Ying system, may suddenly present with locked jaw, clenched teeth, and spasms/torticollis of the tendons and vessels in the hands and feet, resembling stroke (Zhongfeng). Or, due to profuse sweating, similar symptoms may occur: inability to open the jaw, stiff and straight back, sudden opisthotonos (backward arching of the body), and breathlessness as if severed. Although this may be due to deficient fire floating upward generating phlegm, treatment should focus on tonification. Do not use wind-dispelling and phlegm-resolving drugs that would further weaken the postpartum mother. Simply administer Shenghua Decoction to generate robust new blood, which will naturally clear and lubricate the joints. This is what is meant by "when blood is abundant, wind extinguishes itself." Alternatively, use Ziwu Huoluo Decoction (Rich Flavor Meridian-Activating Decoction), taken concurrently with Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill). In critical conditions, administer large amounts of Ginseng Root (Renshen) to rescue from blood collapse. If there is phlegm and fire, add small amounts of Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) and Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Juhong); Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi) should also be added sparingly. Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbo) are strictly contraindicated.
Ziwu Huoluo Decoction: Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) and Ginseng Root (Renshen) each 3 qian, Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) each 2 qian, Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Poria (Fushen), Gastrodia Rhizome (Tianma), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) each 1 qian, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) and Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao) each 0.5 qian, Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), and Notopterygium Root (Qianghuo) each 0.4 qian. If fire is excessive and postpartum period is long, add Stir-fried Coptis Rhizome (Lian) 0.3 qian. For phlegm, add Pinellia Fermented Dough (Xiaqu) 0.7 qian. For copious phlegm, add Bamboo Sap (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi). For constipation, add Cistanche Stem (Rongshu) 2 qian. For thirst, add Kudzu Root (Gegen) 0.8 qian. For profuse sweating, add Ephedra Root (Mahuanggen) 1 qian. For palpitations and fright, add Sour Jujube Seed (Zaoren) 2 qian. For qi stagnation and gradually cooling extremities, add Cassia Seed/Lignuim (Guizi) 1 qian and Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi) 0.5 qian.
Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill): Gastrodia Rhizome (Tianma), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), and Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu) each 5 qian; Ginseng Root (Renshen), Poria (Fushen), Sour Jujube Seed (Zaoren), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Biota Seed (Bairen), Chinese Yam (Shanyao), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) each 1 liang; Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Notopterygium Root (Qianghuo) each 0.7 qian; Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui) 2 liang; Arisaema Rhizome (Nanxing) and Pinellia Fermented Dough (Xiaqu) each 2.5 qian. Grind all into fine powder, form pills with honey the size of Euryale Seed (Qianshi), coat with Cinnabar (Chensha). Take 4-5 pills per dose.
