Soft carbuncles (acute suppurative diseases occurring on the head and face) that heal but recur are difficult to eradicate completely. Use one Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Peel, Citri Aurantii Fructus; fresh ones are better, also known as Choujuzi; if fresh ones are unavailable, use dried Zhiqiao steamed until soft and spread cool), scoop out the pulp, smear flour paste around the four sides of the Zhiqiao, cover it over the carbuncle, place a rush pith (Dengxincao) beside it to drain pus, and it will heal in a few days without leaving scars.
Another prescription: Grind one wild taro root with vinegar and apply externally.
Another prescription: Grind old ship-bottom Chen Duanshi (Cinnabar/Mineral residue from old ships) into powder, mix with oil, and apply.
Another prescription: Equal parts of Sheng Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Recens) and Sheng Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma Recens), ground into powder, applied by crushing Congtou (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and applying to the site. This is very effective for early stages.
Another prescription: Take one tuft of hair from a pig's head and one tuft from a cat's neck (burned to ash), and one grain of Xiong Shufen (Male Rat Feces; those pointed at both ends are authentic), grind them together into powder, and mix with Sesame Oil (Xiangyou).
Another prescription: Take seven Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), grind into powder, add four liang of Hemp Seed Oil (Mayou), boil until reduced by half, strain off the dregs, and apply four or five times until healed. Strictly avoid water contact.
Take eggshells from eggs incubated by hens (named Fenghuangwo), burn to ash retaining efficacy, grind extremely fine, mix with Hemp Seed Oil (Mayou), and apply.
This sore occurs on the head and face, heals but recurs endlessly, hence named Qianceng (Thousand Layers). When it breaks open, use fresh Olive pits (if fresh are unavailable, use salted olive pits boiled in water to remove saltiness), burn to ash, mix with Ji Dan You (Chicken Egg Oil, see formulas for Carbuncles and Toxemia), and apply using duck feathers.
Also known as Lali Tou (Wax Pear Head). Xianghuang San (Fragrant Yellow Powder): Songxiang (Rosin) two liang, ground into powder (insert into a scallion tube, tie tightly with thread, boil in water until melted, remove scallion, and grind into powder).
Another prescription: Apply Niuya San (Ox Tooth Powder, see formulas for Carbuncles and Toxemia), which promotes tissue regeneration and eradicates the root cause, with miraculous efficacy.
Another prescription: Apply Bai Yougao (White Ointment, see formulas for leg sores); even chronic non-healing sores respond well.
Another prescription: First puncture the sore with a knife, apply cooked Buckwheat flour (Shu Qiaomian) high around the head and surrounding area of the sore, slaughter a rooster, pour its hot blood onto the top of the head, and it will heal with new tissue growth in a few days.
Commonly known as Kantou Chuang (Head-Chopping Sore). This type of deep abscess (Ju) occurs at the back of the head, starting small and growing large, belonging to Yin Syndrome (Yin Zheng). Cold-natured medicines must absolutely not be taken. If treated improperly, it may rot and lead to death due to "falling head" (severe necrosis/infection spreading to the brain). It is mostly caused by karmic retribution; treat according to various formulas for Yin Abscesses in Volume 11, and refer to the section on Karmic Retribution of Yin Abscesses (see end of Yin Abscess volume) as essential.
