The clinical manifestations of malaria have been detailed in classical medical treatises. Malaria characterized by chills preceding fever is termed Cold Malaria (Han Nue); that with fever preceding chills is termed Warm Malaria (Wen Nue); that with fever only and no chills is termed Dan Malaria (Dan Nue, or Heat Malaria); and that with chills only and no fever is termed Pin Malaria (Pin Nue, or Cold Malaria).
Caused by overexertion. Guo Fengyuan stated: "When ordinary people feel temporarily fatigued, it is generally referred to as labor fatigue (Lao Juan). However, contemporary people regard 'labor' as a severe ailment and avoid mentioning it; relatives and friends jointly conceal and euphemize this condition."
The methods for treating diseases invariably involve using cold-natured herbs to treat heat syndromes and hot-natured herbs to treat cold syndromes. If there is obstruction, one treats the blockage; if there is blockage, one promotes unblocking. One tonifies the element that cannot overcome the pathogenic factor and reduces the element that overcomes it. When the Qi becomes balanced and the pathogenic factor submits, the disease resolves.
Sun Simiao said: "Women's diseases are ten times more difficult to treat than men's because women have greater desires than men, and thus they are affected by diseases twice as much as men. This is largely due to emotions such as compassion, attachment, hatred, jealousy, sorrow, and anger, each leading to distinct pathological changes."
The viscera and bowels of humans all become diseased through contact with and exposure to external pathogens, among which the Spleen and Stomach are most susceptible. If daily dietary intake is slightly excessive, food stagnation occurs and becomes difficult to digest; if there is an imbalance of cold and heat, vomiting, injury from drinking fluids, and injury from food ingestion occur, damaging the Qi and Blood and forming accumulations.
During the four seasons, cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind interact and contend, easily triggering various diseases. One must observe and prevent them in advance. A slight lapse in prevention allows these pathogens to invade the human body. Additionally, there are epidemic fevers, miasma malaria, and other diseases.
The Classics state: "When humans contract cold pathogens, they fall ill. Mild cases result in coughing, while severe cases lead to diarrhea and pain." Coughs can originate from any of the five Zang organs and six Fu organs, but the Lung is the first to be invaded by the pathogen. The Lung governs Qi and connects with the skin and hair...
There are four main methods for treating difficult childbirth (Nan Chan): First, the Kidney is the organ of storage, and its Qi tends toward closure and retention. Therefore, formulas for inducing labor mostly employ slippery and rapid-acting herbs (such as Rabbit Brain [Tunao], Ash from Brush Heads [Bitouhui], and Talcum [Huashi]). Decoct Wujisan (Five Accumulations Powder) with Shunwan Pill powder. For obese patients with difficult childbirth, use a formula containing Licorice Root [Gancao] and Aurantium Fruit [Zhiqiao], indicated for those with abundant Qi and Blood excess.
