It treats cough with reverse flow of qi, chest bi syndrome, lower back pain, hypochondriac stiffness, scrofula, metrorrhagia, and other syndromes.
[Can Tui] (Silkworm Molt), also known as Ma Ming Tuo. Use after light stir-frying. It is the skin shed by old silkworms when they wake from sleep. Some currently refer to paper used for rearing silkworms as Ma Ming Tui, which is incorrect. It treats eye nebulae and obstructions. It acts more swiftly than Chan Tui (Cicada Slough). Unfortunately, it is difficult to find at times.
[Mi Meng Hua] (Flos Buddlejae Officinalis) enters the Blood level of the Liver meridian. It moistens Liver dryness. It is a specialized herb for dispelling wind and dissipating nodules in eye diseases. It treats amaurosis, dim vision with nebulae, redness and swelling of the eyes, excessive discharge and tearing. It specifically governs wind-heat affecting the eyes, sudden nebulae, and tearing. Its action lies in dispersing wind pathogens of the Liver and Lungs. Excessive use causes eye swelling. Contraindicated for long-standing nebulae, blood deficiency, heat stroke, and acute anger-induced redness and swelling.
[Bai Ji Li] (Tribuli Fructus) (Soaked in wine, stir-fried until scorched, thorns removed). Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians. Treats phlegm. Dissipates carbuncles and swellings. Searches out wind pathogenic factors in the Kidneys. It is an essential herb for treating wind-related eye disorders and improving vision. When wind pathogens invade the Heart, Kidney, or Pericardium collaterals, this herb serves as a guide. Eye diseases are caused by wind-Wood pathogenic factors; when wind is excessive, eye disease occurs; when wind leaves, vision clears. Its nature is bitter, capable of draining; warm, capable of circulating; pungent, capable of moistening. Therefore, it specifically treats evil blood, breaks up stasis and accumulations. It treats throat obstruction and mastitis.
[Cao Jue Ming] (Cassiae Semen), also known as Jue Ming Zi. Stir-fried and ground. It can clear heat and improve vision. It treats amaurosis, excessive ocular discharge, red eyes, and tearing. It is a specialized herb for grinding away nebulae and obstructions. It also treats wind-heat invading the Liver, causing restlessness, insomnia, and unsettled spirit. It should not be taken for a long time, lest it over-consumes and causes cold in the middle jiao.
[Jin Yin Hua] (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) Enters the Spleen meridian and connects to the Lung meridian. It primarily treats dysentery with pus and blood. It is an essential herb for treating internal and external carbuncles and swellings. It detoxifies and expels pus, draining while tonifying. [Zi Bei Fu Ping] (Emplastrum Lemnae Minoris), also known as Shui Ping. Enters the Lung meridian. Its nature is light and floating, entering the Lung meridian and reaching the skin. Thus, it can induce sweating to expel pathogens. It is a specialized herb for dispelling wind. Its sweating effect surpasses Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba); its diuretic effect is faster than Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla). For severe diseases like leprosy affecting the whole body, decocting thickly and bathing for half a day is often effective. The *Ben Jing* states it treats sudden fever and itching because it specifically disperses wind-heat from the muscle surface. Its ability to move water qi comes from its connection to the Stomach and Large Intestine interstices. Its superiority over wine lies in the unblocking of the Stomach and Large Intestine, thereby removing alcohol toxicity. Its ability to grow hair and nails implies that hair follicles are open and blood vessels are nourished. Its ability to stop xiao ke (wasting-thirst) implies that channel qi is harmonized and fluids are restored. Qu Feng Dan treats leprosy and all excess wind-dampness, podagra, and thirty-six types of wind. Contraindicated for those with original Qi deficiency, as it will worsen the condition. Those with exterior deficiency and spontaneous sweating are especially contraindicated; users must be cautious. Attached Formula: Qu Feng Dan. [Wei Ling Xian] (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma) Has a nature good at moving downward, penetrating the twelve meridians. Thus, it can circulate the five zang organs. It is an essential herb for treating epigastric accumulation pain, leg bi-syndrome with dampness, and gout. It reduces edema. Breaks hard accumulations. Morning administration yields evening results. For toxin stagnation of rubella/varicella blocking above, unable to descend, causing swelling and sluggishness from waist to knees, using it as a guiding agent works immediately. If the disease is in Hand Taiyang Small Intestine or Foot Taiyang Bladder, using this too early invites the enemy inside. This is why it is strictly avoided throughout measles treatment. Its nature is ascending and developing. Contraindicated for deficiency with rising Qi causing vomiting, and for yin-fire flaring upward. If taken by those with yin deficiency and bone-steaming fever, it aids the deficient Yang to rebel upward, inevitably exhausting true Yin before stopping. Measles syndromes involve much blood depletion; thus, it is strictly forbidden. Those holding the power of life and death must examine this carefully.
[Yin Chai Hu] (Stellariae Radix) Enters the Kidney and Stomach meridians. Its nature and flavor are not very different from Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis). Not only clears heat but also cools blood. Treats throat obstruction and mouth sores. Used to ascend and disperse great heat of Large Intestine, Stomach, Sanjiao, Gallbladder. Because its Qi stirs up heat-toxin upwards, harm is unpredictable. Thus, particularly strictly forbidden in measles. Misuse leads to immediate wheezing and fullness. Only for post-measles mouth sores, gum rot, and rectal prolapse can it be slightly applied. Mr. Zhang Lu said: According to ancient formulas, Sheng Ma is often used in measles ascending drugs. Who knows Sheng Ma's ascending nature can stir up Yang Qi, often causing pathogenic heat to float upward and cause wheezing/rebellion. Should substitute with Zi Su (Perillae Folium) and Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). Removes dampness and treats dead flesh/carbuncles. Directs Qi downward, transforms phlegm/food/drinking癖. Can also resolve all depressions. Although nature opens interstices, it is pungent-hot-warm-dry. Thus, contraindicated in measles.
