太一神常以冬至之日,居住在汁蛰之宫四十六日,次日迁居天溜宫四十六日,次日迁居仓门宫四十六日,次日迁居阴洛宫四十五日,次日迁居上天宫(杨上善按:《灵枢》作天宫。)四十六日,次日迁居玄委宫四十六日,次日迁居仓果宫四十六日,次日迁居新洛宫四十五日,次日又回到汁蛰之宫。从其所在的宫位(杨上善按:“从其宫”三字,《灵枢》作“曰冬至矣,太一日游,以冬至之日,居吐蛰之宫”十八字。)推算其所在方位,太阳每日从一个宫位运行,到第九宫后又返回第一个宫位,经常如此循环不已,终而复始。太一神每日迁徙(杨上善按:徙,《灵枢》作移。),天气必定以风雨来响应它。如果在其所居之日刮起风雨,则是吉兆,预示年成好,百姓安康少病;如果风雨先于节气到来,则多雨;如果后于节气到来,则多旱。太一在冬至之日若有变异,占卜结果应在君主身上;

Lidong (Start of Winter) Six Xinluo (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Ling Shu* has the three characters "Northwest Direction")

The Taiyi Spirit (Taiyi Shen) usually resides in the Zhizhe Palace for forty-six days starting from the day of the Winter Solstice. The next day it moves to the Tianliu Palace for forty-six days. The next day it moves to the Cangmen Palace for forty-six days. The next day it moves to the Yinluo Palace for forty-five days. The next day it moves to the Shangtian Palace (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Ling Shu* writes Tiangong.) for forty-six days. The next day it moves to the Xuanwei Palace for forty-six days. The next day it moves to the Cangguo Palace for forty-six days. The next day it moves to the Xinluo Palace for forty-five days. The next day it returns to the Zhizhe Palace. Counting from its current palace (Note by Yang Shangshan: The three characters "cong qi gong" in *Ling Shu* are written as "yue dongzhi yi, Taiyi ri you, yi dongzhi zhi ri, ju tu zhe zhi gong" totaling eighteen characters.), one can determine its location. The Sun travels from one palace to another, returning to the first after reaching the ninth, continuing this cycle endlessly, ending and beginning again. When the Taiyi Spirit shifts daily (Note by Yang Shangshan: Xi in *Ling Shu* is written as Yi.), Heaven responds with wind and rain. If there is wind and rain on the day corresponding to its residence, it is an auspicious sign indicating a good harvest, with people being healthy and having few illnesses. If the wind and rain come before the season, there will be excessive rain; if they come after the season, there will be excessive drought. If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the palace on the day of the Winter Solstice, the omen applies to the Sovereign (Jun);
If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the palace on the day of the Spring Equinox, the omen applies to the Chancellor (Xiang); If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the Central Palace, the omen applies to the Officials (Li); If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the palace on the day of the Autumn Equinox, the omen applies to the General (Jiang); If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the palace on the day of the Summer Solstice, the omen applies to the Common People (Baixing). What is meant by "anomaly" is that on the days Taiyi resides in a certain palace, fierce winds break trees and scatter sand and stones. One should predict fortune or misfortune based on the corresponding internal organs and external tissues, observing the direction from which the wind comes to make divinations. (Note by Yang Shangshan: In *Ling Shu*, "suo sheng" is written as "suo zhu", and "ri shi" is written as "yin shi".) Wind coming from the direction where Taiyi resides is called Real Wind (Shi Feng), which governs the growth and nourishment of all things. Wind coming from the direction opposite to Taiyi's residence is called Empty Wind (Xu Feng), which harms people (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Jia Yi Jing* adds the character "Ze" (thief/malicious) before "shang"), governing destruction and harm. One must carefully anticipate and avoid Empty Wind; thus, the Sage avoids evil influences and cannot be harmed, which is what is meant here. (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Ling Shu* writes "gu sheng ren bi xie fu neng hai" as "gu sheng ren ri bi xu xie zhi dao, ru bi shi shi ran, xie bu neng hai". Therefore, Taiyi enters and departs from the Middle Palace, stands in the Central Palace, and then faces the Eight Winds to divine auspiciousness and inauspiciousness. The following text discusses Taiyi departing from the Central Palace to face the Eight Winds to divine outcomes. Note by Yang Shangshan: In *Ling Shu*, "Cong" is written as "Xi".) Wind coming from the South is named Da Ruo Feng (Great Weak Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Heart (Xin) and externally affects the Vessels (Mai), and its energy primarily causes Heat (Re). (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Ling Shu* writes "qi zhu re" as three characters.) Wind coming from the Southwest is named Mou Feng. When it injures people, it settles internally in the Spleen (Pi) and externally affects the Muscles (Ji), and its energy primarily causes Weakness (Ruo). (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Jia Yi Jing* adds the character "Rou" (flesh) after "Ji".) Wind coming from the West is named Gang Feng (Hard Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Lung (Fei) and externally affects the Skin (Pifu), and its energy primarily causes Body Dryness (Shen Zao). (Note by Yang Shangshan: *Ling Shu* and *Jia Yi Jing* lack the character "Shen" before "Zao".) Wind coming from the Northwest is named Zhe Feng (Breaking Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Small Intestine (Xiao Chang) and externally affects the Hand Taiyang Meridian (Shou Taiyang Mai). If the meridians are severed, fluids overflow; if they are blocked, knots form and flow stops, leading to a tendency for sudden death (Xi in *Ling Shu* and *Jia Yi Jing* is written as Shan). Wind coming from the North is named Da Gang Feng (Great Hard Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Kidney (Shen) and externally affects the Bones (Gu) and the Erector Spinae Tendons (Lv Jin) of the shoulder and back, and its energy primarily causes Cold (Han). Wind coming from the Northeast is named Xiong Feng (Auspicious/Misfortune Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Large Intestine (Da Chang) and externally affects the bilateral hypochondrium, axilla, bones below, and limb joints. Wind coming from the East is named Ying'er Feng (Infant Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Liver (Gan) and externally affects the Tendons (Jin Ren), and its energy primarily causes Body Dampness (Shen Shi). (Ren means rope/cord, referring to the transmission of tendons. Note by Yang Shangshan: Ren in *Ling Shu* and *Jia Yi Jing* is written as Niu. *Jia Yi Jing* lacks the character "Shen" before "Shi".) Wind coming from the Southeast is named Ruo Feng (Weak Wind). When it injures people, it settles internally in the Stomach (Wei) and externally affects the Flesh (Rou), and its energy primarily causes Body Heaviness (Ti Zhong). (Note by Yang Shangshan: Yu Rou in *Ling Shu* is written as Ji Rou, in *Jia Yi Jing* as Yu Ji.) All these eight winds come from the empty/vulnerable directions, thereby causing disease. When three types of deficiency interact, sudden illness and abrupt death occur; when there are two realities and one deficiency, the disease manifests as Linlu (damp-heat dysuria) and chills and fever; invading the two damp places leads to Wei syndrome (flaccidity). Thus, the Sage avoids evil winds as one would avoid arrows and stones. If one has three deficiencies and is partially struck by the evil wind, it results in Jipu Pian Ku (collapse and hemiplegia). (Wind comes from the opposing direction, hence called coming from the empty direction. Three deficiencies refer to Year Deficiency, Month Deficiency, and Seasonal Deficiency. Among the three deficiencies, even if two are solid, if one encounters evil, it still leads to Linlu chills and fever; dwelling in damp places leads to Wei Jue; let alone encountering evil with two deficiencies and one solid, how could the disease not be severe; if one first encounters evil amidst three deficiencies, it leads to Jipu Pian Ku disease. Note by Yang Shangshan: In *Ling Shu*, "Xiang Bo" is written as "Xiang Bo". *Jia Yi Jing* writes "Liang Shi Yi Xu" as "Liang Xu Yi Shi". Linluo in *Ling Shu* and *Jia Yi Jing* is written as Linlu. Avoiding evil wind: *Jia Yi Jing* lacks the character "Feng", *Ling Shu* lacks the character "Xie".)
