Shugu (BL65) is in the depression behind the metatarsophalangeal joint; Tonggu (BL66) is strong in the depression before the joint; Zhiyin (BL67) is indeed on the side of the little toe. The points of the Taiyang meridian are detailed in their beginning and end. (Approximately sixty-three points, totaling one hundred and twenty-six points bilaterally.)
The meridian of Foot-Shaoyin Kidney originates below the little toe, slanting towards the sole of the foot, emerging below Ran Gu, following behind the medial malleolus, entering separately into the heel, ascending along the medial aspect of the leg, emerging from the lateral aspect, ascending along the posterior medial aspect of the thigh, piercing the spine, belonging to the Kidney, and connecting with the Bladder. Its straight branch ascends from the Kidney, pierces the Liver and Diaphragm, enters the Lung, follows the throat, and flanks the root of the tongue. Its branch emerges from the Lung, connects with the Heart, and pours into the chest.
When the meridian moves abnormally, disease manifests: hunger without desire to eat, face like lacquered charcoal, coughing and spitting blood, panting with sound, sitting with a desire to rise, eyes dim and unable to see clearly, heart hanging empty as if hungry, Qi deficiency leading to fearfulness, heart palpitations as if being hunted, known as Bone-Jue. Diseases governed by the Kidney include: heat in the mouth and dry tongue, swelling and upper-rebellious Qi in the throat, dryness and pain in the throat, vexation, heart pain, jaundice, intestinal rumbling and diarrhea, pain along the posterior medial aspect of the spine and thigh, flaccidity and cold limbs, lethargy, heat and pain in the soles of the feet. For these diseases, excess is drained, deficiency is tonified, heat is treated with rapid needle manipulation, cold with retained needle, sinking Qi with moxibustion, and neither excess nor deficiency is treated by selecting points from the meridian itself. If moxibustion is used, one should eat strongly to generate flesh, loosen the belt, let down the hair, and walk with a large staff and heavy shoes. In excess conditions, the Cun Kou pulse is twice as large as the Ren Ying pulse; in deficiency, the Cun Kou pulse is smaller than the Ren Ying pulse.
"Qu" means to approach. The Foot-Shaoyin meridian starts below the little toe, slanting towards Yongquan in the sole of the foot, turning out anterior to the medial malleolus, arising below the large bone at Ran Gu, descending along Tai Xi behind the medial malleolus, entering separately into the heel at Da Zhong, Zhao Hai, Shui Quan, then bending from the outside of Da Zhong, ascending along the medial malleolus, running posterior to the Jueyin and Taiyin meridians, passing through the Benjing points Fuliu and Jiaoxin, crossing the Spleen meridian point Sanyinjiao, ascending along the medial leg via Zhubin, emerging from the medial margin of the leg, reaching Yin Gu, ascending along the posterior medial thigh piercing the spine, meeting Changqiang of the Du meridian, returning to the front, following Henggu, Dahe, Qixue, Siman, Zhongzhu, Huangshu. At the location of Huangshu, left and right of the umbilicus belong to the Kidney, passing below the umbilicus through the Ren meridian points Guanyuan and Zhongji to connect with the Bladder. Its straight branch ascends from the location where Huangshu belongs to the Kidney, following Shangqu, Shiguan, Yindu, Tonggu, piercing the Liver, ascending through Youmen, piercing the Diaphragm, passing Bulang into the Lung, following Shenfeng, Lingxu, Shencang, Yuzhong, Yu Fu, ascending along the throat, joining Renying, flanking the root of the tongue to end. Its branch separates from Shencang, winds around the Heart, pours into Danzhong in the chest, to intersect with the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium meridian.
Above Shaoyin, Jun Fire governs. When Shaoyyin moves causing disease, the Qi of upper and lower does not intersect, hence hunger without desire to eat, heart hanging empty as if hungry. Qi deficiency below leads to fearfulness; deficiency above leads to heart palpitations as if being hunted. Shaoyin belongs to the Kidney, which connects superiorly to the Lung, and the Kidney is the source of generating Qi. A face like lacquered charcoal indicates Shaoyin Qi failing to ascend. Coughing and spitting blood with panting indicates Shaoyin generating Qi failing to connect superiorly to the Lung, causing Lung Qi to rebel upward. Sitting with a desire to rise is a sign of agitation, Shaoyin Qi rebelling downward yet desiring to ascend. The essence of bone manifests in the pupils; dim vision indicates failure of essence and Qi to ascend. This is Shaoyin Kidney generating Qi rebelling downward, causing these diseases, hence called Bone-Jue.
The Kidney stores Essence. If diseases generated by the Kidney occur, Essence and Fluids fail to nourish superiorly, causing symptoms like oral heat, dry tongue, sore throat, and vexation. This is because Water fails to descend and nourish, causing Fire to flourish superiorly. Qi rebelling downward causes flaccidity and cold limbs. "Sheng" should be read as "Sheng" (livestock). The Rites of Zhou states: "Initially raising is called Chu, preparing for use is called Sheng." Sheep, Ox, and Pig are the Three Sheng. Sheep is Fire livestock, Ox is Earth livestock, Pig is Water livestock. Their nature is restless and prone to running. Strongly eating Sheng meat assists Kidney Qi to ascend, harmonizing with Fire and Earth. Loosening the belt allows for stretching. Kidney Essence, transformed by Heart Spirit into red Blood, has Hair as its surplus. Letting down the hair allows Spirit Qi to descend inferiorly. Using a large staff and heavy shoes mobilizes the Qi of sinews and bones. Yin and Yang Qi may rebel in the Kidney, legs, ankles, or bones. This chapter discusses Shaoyin Qi rebelling downward, hence advising strong consumption of Sheng meat, loosening the belt, letting down hair, using a staff and walking, aiming to make the generating Qi of Yin and Yang ascend and circulate. Yin and Yang Six Qi originate from the generation of Zang-Fu and Five Elements. Thus, "Is Dong" refers to Six Qi operating externally, responding to Si Tian and Zai Quan, ascending and descending, moving ceaselessly. "Suo Sheng" refers to Shen Ji transformation, generated internally, entering and exiting externally, producing endless life. This is Qi born internally and moving externally.
