Horizontal trigrams represent three Kan (Water), vertical trigrams represent Chuan (River/Water), and the single dot in the center represents True Yang. When Kidney Yin is deficient, True Yang is exposed, transforming into Dragon Fire, which belongs to the Zhen (Thunder) trigram; the Yang energy below the Zhen trigram shares the same origin, rising to transform into Thunder Fire. Therefore, Thunder belongs to Wood, and all these are Fires within Yin. Purely Yin herbs will only make the fire more blazing; ordinary herbal medicines cannot control it. One should use Yi Yuan Dan (One-Source Pill), taking it for a long time until cured:
Take five or six jin (pounds) of Dan Qiu Shi (Aged Urine Stone), and form pills using Red Date paste. Take five or six qian in the morning, two or three qian in the evening, delivered with a decoction made by adding a small amount of Yang Qiu Shi (Yang Urine Stone).
The pulse is wiry and rapid, with the Chi (Cun Cun) position being particularly enlarged. There is coughing, throat pain, and loss of voice. This is the result of Yin deficiency and flaming up of deficiency fire after years of hemoptysis, which goes without saying. Only substances of extreme stillness can guide Yang to submerge into Yin, thereby approaching the principle of the *Nei Jing* (Inner Canon). However, one must practice quiet recuperation to ensure Yin is secure and Yang is dense, achieving the interaction between Kan (Water) and Li (Fire):
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Hai Shi Fen (Pulverized Floating Limestone), Jin Shi Hu (Dendrobium Officinale), Bei Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Gui Fu Ban (Plastrum Testudinis), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome).
The body suddenly becomes thinner, the pulse is extremely deficient, Qi is timid with occasional coughing, vision darkens, the pulse is wiry, and there is a sense of vague unhappiness. Everyone knows how to tonify Qi and Blood, but it is advisable to introduce Yin animals (Muskrat/Lutra liver) into the Yin level for the medicine to be effective. Catch one muskrat morning and evening, dry its liver in the shade, and prepare Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue). Take one qian of Lu Jiao Jiao powder in the morning and one qian of Muskrat Liver powder in the evening, both taken with boiled water. This is a common hundred-day method; now a decoction is prescribed for initial intake:
Ren Shen (Ginseng), Fu Ling (Poria), Tu Si Zi Bing (Cuscuta Seed Cake), Nan Zao (Southern Dates), Jiao Bai Zhu (Charred Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry).
The Left Guan pulse beats urgently and rapidly, while the Right Guan pulse is wiry and large. Without Stomach Qi, Yuan Qi cannot return to its root, and the Sea of Qi lacks foundation. If the Right Guan is like this, the condition will worsen in Spring; if the Left Guan is like this, it will collapse in Autumn. Fearing the Left Guan manifestation, I tentatively apply the ancient treatment of "Yi and Gui sharing the same source" (Liver and Kidney):
Da Sheng Di (Large Raw Rehmannia Root), Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Huai Shan Yao (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), Zi Shi Ying (Purple Quartz).
This illness originated from mental exertion and overwork, combined with irregular exposure to wind and cold, leading to coughing and expectoration, which eventually caused internal injury. Internal injury refers to damage to the Zang organ Qi, known as Xu Lao (Consumptive Disease) in ancient texts, which is generally difficult to cure. One must completely cease mental exertion and overwork, eliminate all mundane thoughts, and assist with medication to perhaps prolong life:
Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice), Sha Shen (Glehnia or Adenophora Root), Mi Ren (Coix Seed), Fu Ling (Poria).
This is Sha Lao (Sha Consumptive Disease). It arises from damage to Tai Yin (Spleen), transmitting daily to Foot Sha Yin (Kidney). When Spleen Qi is weak causing loose stools, the pathogen enters the lower Zang organs. There is little hope for treatment; it is best to return home immediately and practice closed-door quiet recuperation. Here is a formula gifted for daily drinking:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Bai He (Lily Bulb), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry).
For a person at the age of sixty (Flower Cycle), the two Chi pulses are uniquely enlarged. At a time when both Kidneys are declining, how can this be? It is urgent to advance the method of "Yi and Gui sharing the same source":
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Tu Si Zi Bing (Cuscuta Seed Cake), Fu Ling (Poria), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Zao Lian Cao (Eclipta Prostrata Herb), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry). Formed into honey pills.
This is a syndrome of True Yin deficiency, commonly known as Hundred-Day Consumption. With slight latent summerheat, the chills and fever become more severe. It is a pity that treatment was not started earlier:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Qian Cao (Madder Root), Qing Hao (Sweet Wormwood), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Hua Shi (Talcum), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex).
The single line in the middle of Kan (True Yang) flies alone upwards. Once it intersects with the months of Si and Wu (Summer), even Shen Shui Jin Dan (Divine Water Golden Pill) cannot help it:
Lao Sheng Jiang (Old Ginger), Tian Dong (Asparagus Cochinchinensis Root), Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root), Gan Cao (Licorice), Chuan Shi Hu (Dendrobium Nobile Stem), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit).
The constitution favors spicy food. Medical books state: "Excessive consumption of spicy food leads to sudden death." Now, upon diagnosis, the complexion, pulse, and physique are all exhausted. Although sudden death may not occur, longevity is also unlikely. One should manage the disease. Let him first take San Sheng Yin (Three Lives Decoction):
Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Fen Gan Cao (Powdered Licorice), Sheng Mi Ren (Raw Coix Seed), Hong Zao (Red Dates).
This is a Sun (Damage) syndrome, transmitting downward from upper damage. First damage affects Lung, then transmits to Heart, Liver, Spleen, and finally Kidney, resulting in bone痿 (impotence/atrophy) where one cannot rise from bed. It is absolutely inadvisable to administer lung-regulating medicines again, as this would accelerate the damage. Perhaps Zhu Du Wan (Pork Stomach Pill) can be taken:
Zhu Du Wan (Pork Stomach Pill).
Under fifty years old, yet form, pulse, and color are all decaying. Inquiring reveals the loss of three sons. Is it not due to this? Moreover, he has harmed his grandson. This is beyond the reach of medicinal therapy:
Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber).
The pulse is rapid and wiry. This is a Yin deficiency syndrome, not an external contraction. Currently, deficiency fire rises causing headache, gradually showing signs of dual injury to Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney). Quiet recuperation is the way to recover; medication is secondary. Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Gui Ban (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Dan Qiu Shi (Aged Urine Stone). Formed into pills with date paste, taken with boiled water.
Lung is the master of Water. Excessive heat causes melting; once melted, the water source is exhausted. Earth is the mother of Metal. If Earth does not generate Metal, Metal has no source. The three Zang organs of Metal, Earth, and Water perish day by day. Without Jade Fluid, how can Spirit and Essence return? Since the physical body is already exhausted, even if a secret formula is devised, it is merely based on ancient common talk:
Wei Jing Tang (Reed Shoot Decoction).
Heart Yin deficiency leads to easy sweating; Lung Yin deficiency leads to frequent coughing; Liver Yin deficiency leads to fire rising; Kidney Yin deficiency leads to fever; Spleen Yin deficiency leads to loose stools. Is this not the same True Yin deficiency? This is the gradual onset of Que Zheng (Timidity Syndrome/Consumption). Knowing only to treat the head for headaches makes one a good doctor, but not knowing that "treading on frost leads to solid ice" (seeing the beginning to foresee the end), a gentleman should have a heart of worry and danger:
Chao Bai Shao (Stir-fried White Peony Root), Xiao Sheng Di (Small Raw Rehmannia Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Zao (Dates), Gui Zhi Mo (Cinnamon Twig Powder), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice), Qing Hao Geng (Sweet Wormwood Stem), Yun Fu Ling (Cloud Poria).
Diagnosis reveals a fine, rapid, and faint pulse, a dry yellow tongue, diarrhea, and a scorched, dry body. This is Yin injury due to excessive purging, with heat pathogens sinking inward. It is highly concerning. The treatment method should use light clearing to remove pathogens and bitter draining to clear heat. Whether this applies remains to be seen:
Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Xiao Sheng Di (Small Raw Rehmannia Root), Ren Zhong Huang (Human Waste Yellow), Dan Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem), Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower).
Dietary imbalance indicates Tai Yin deficiency. Ge Yichuan's *Zhou Hou Fang* has a single-herb method for treating consumptive disease: for Sha Yin and Jue Yin deficiency, use Lu Jiao San (Deer Horn Powder); for Tai Yin deficiency, use Shen Qu San (Medicated Leaven Powder). Now using Shen Qu San:
Real aged Liu Shen Qu (Six Gods Medicated Leaven), ground fine and stir-fried until fragrant, four liang. After each meal, mix two qian with boiled water and take orally.
The Middle Jiao is the gathering place for Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids. Current diagnosis shows Stomach Qi cannot flow through the vessels, indicating a deficiency of Yuan Qi. Sour flavors astringe and prevent leakage, pungent flavors promote movement, but only sweet flavors cultivate. Due to increased swelling, previous treatments were stopped. A formula is proposed for review:
Ju Bai (Citrus Reticulata White Pith), Zhuo Ai (Moxa), Xing Tou Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry).
There are fourteen types of Jue (Reversal) syndromes. Purging is one method, sedating is another. If Liver Qi is excessively curved or straight, it not only insults Earth but also disregards Metal above. Sedating methods may face rejection due to incompatibility. Instead, guide according to the trend, then moisten and nourish. Few will fail:
Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn), Jin Ling Rou (Chinese Medlar Flesh), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice), Dan Wu Yu (Light Evodia Fruit), Hei Lv Dou (Black Soybean), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Yun Fu Ling (Cloud Poria), Chuan Yu Jin Zhi (Curcuma Longa Juice).
Zhang Zhongjing's book states: "Malaria pulses are naturally wiry." This sentence opens the heavenly eyes of humanity. Now, among the Three Regions and Nine Positions, not a trace of wiry image is visible. The pathogen fighting healthy Qi is not like spring wind, summer heat, or southern miasma. From this deduction, half the thinking is done:
Cao Guo Ren (Tsao Ko Seed), Chao Hou Po (Charred Magnolia Bark), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Bai Fu Ling (White Poria), Zhi Cang Zhu (Processed Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice).
The pulse becomes larger upon deeper pressure, indicating insufficient Yin Qi, allowing Malaria pathogens to penetrate deeply. Lou Lu and Bie Jia (Softshell Turtle Shell) tonify Yin too much, unsuitable for a sixty-year-old mind-weary constitution. Excessive sweating worries Yang Qi; hidden pathogens in the Stomach prevent fluid intake. All these indicate one victory cannot overcome defeat. How can one induce sweating again? The patient must be careful, and the physician cautious:
Ren Shen (Ginseng), Kou Ren (Cardamom Seed), Dan Huang Qin (Light Scutellaria Root), Sheng Mu Li (Raw Oyster Shell), Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Xiao Qing Pi (Young Tangerine Peel), Sheng Shou Wu (Raw Polygonum Multiflorum), Xin Gu (New Rice), Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice).
Clearly, Liver Wind is surging upward. The Left Chi pulse is chaotic and beats against the finger. This is "Yi and Gui sharing the same source," meaning Liver and Kidney diseases together. However, Sha Yin meridians do not reach the vertex; only Yin can reach there. Prioritize Liver, then Kidney:
Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn), Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Dang Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Center), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Fu Ling (Poria), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit).
This is due to Metal and Water not supporting each other, hence chronic cough. Do not regulate the Lung; the Lung is a delicate organ, and regulating it further causes deficiency. The syndrome should not be treated with general Yin tonification.
Bei Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Zheng Yu Zhu (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome), Yun Fu Shen (Cloud Poria with Hostwood), Chuan Shi Hu (Dendrobium Nobile Stem), Tian Xing Ren (Sweet Apricot Seed), Sheng Bian Dou (Raw Lablab Bean).
Shortness of breath and loss of voice, with a sound like a water chicken in the throat. The Right pulse is like a leather pulse, facial edema and sallow complexion indicate Lung and Stomach involvement, with fullness and hardness below the heart. Frequent changes between tonifying and purging yield no effect. Worse in Winter, severe in Spring. Propose Wei Jing Yue Bi Cheng Tang (Reed Shoot and Ma Huang Ephedra Modified Decoction), drink three doses:
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gui Zhi Mu (Cinnamon Twig Wood), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Dong Gua Zi (Winter Melon Seed), Sheng Mi Ren (Raw Coix Seed).
Originally Damp-Warmth, transforming in the Triple Burner, filling the interstices. Mistakenly injuring the Qi of Hand Tai Yin (Lung) and Foot Tai Yang (Bladder) inevitably leads to gradual decline into deficiency. This is not the fault of the disease, but of the treatment. One must move to a bright, quiet, and void environment, treating over a hundred days to hopefully recover. Proposed formula opens Tai Yang, benefits Tai Yin:
Dan Gan Jiang (Light Dried Ginger, pounded with Wu Wei Zi), Fu Ling (Poria), Di Gu Pi (Lycium Bark), Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf), Sheng Bian Dou (Raw Lablab Bean), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice).
A wiry, moving, and emotionless pulse is named "Stomach Qi Deficiency." Although not exactly "only wiry without Stomach Qi" as described in *Nan Jing*, it is inappropriate for chronic illness. Do not continuously administer purely Yin medicines due to blood loss, as suppressing Yang leaves Yin without support. My humble opinion suggests advancing Sweet-Warm formulas:
Jian Zhong Tang (Build the Middle Decoction) plus Ren Shen (Ginseng), Zhi Mian Qi (Honey-fried Astragalus Root), Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Center).
The disease is in the Extraordinary Vessels; treating other meridians is ineffective. Know that blood flows through the Clear Pathways; if Clear Qi is not肃 (descending/clearing), nasal bleeding and dizziness occur. Both issues stem from the Du Mai (Governor Vessel). Prefer ancient methods over strange useless ones. Treatment with ancient methods will naturally be effective.
Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Guang Yuan He (Longan Seed), Ce Bai Ye (Biota Tops). Grind to powder, form pills with honey. Take five qian in the morning, three qian in the evening, with boiled water.
Shu (Summer Heat) is a Yin pathogen within Heat. The Heart receives it first, invading the Bao Luo (Pericardium Vessels). Lethargy, silence, confusion, and cold limbs indicate untreatability. Now the pulse is slow and soft, showing signs of this progression. Limbs are gradually cold, with fear of internal closure and external collapse. Urgently use Tong Yang Jiu Ni (Unblock Yang and Rescue Reversal) method, imitating the principle of You Da Shun San (Right Great Smooth Powder):
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Jiao Bai Shao (Charred White Peony Root), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice).
The Right pulse is Kou (hollow) and beating, deafness, lower bleeding, unrelenting chills and fever. Injury to Yin collaterals, and Jue Yin failing to control. Heat pathogens should be vented from the Extreme Yin; this is the primary principle of preserving Yin:
Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), Bai Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root), Chao Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), Bie Jia (Softshell Turtle Shell), Xian He Ye (Fresh Lotus Leaf). One he of Mi (Rice), soaked in water as decoction base.
Right pulse seven beats per respiration, wiry; Right pulse six beats per respiration, tight (Original text has two Right pulses: sourced from *Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine*). Coughing without ability to breathe. Yin Qi is weak, Metal and Water suffer together. Discuss administering Jing Yue Liu Jun Jian (Jing Yue Six Gentlemen Decoction):
Jin Shui Liu Jun Jian (Metal-Water Six Gentlemen Decoction).
Suffering from asthma chronically, with weak form and Qi, sore throat without swelling, occasional cough. This is new Wind-Warmth affecting the Lung, with Qi failing to descend and clear. Should continue with clearing and descending:
Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaf), Bai Sha Shen (Glehnia Root), Kuai Fu Ling (Chunk Poria), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), Nan Zao Rou (Southern Date Flesh).
Constitution is thin; coughing with blood easily injures Yin. Do not regulate the Lung, because Water originates from the High Source (Lung), Lung governs Qi and is the mother, relying on it to generate fluids and nourish the hundred vessels:
Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Qing E Jiao (Clear Donkey-hide Gelatin), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Liao Dou Pi (Lablab Bean Skin), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Bai He (Lily Bulb).
The formula discussed yesterday. Pressing the two Guan positions reveals a wiry pulse. Specifically borrowing Zhang Zhongjing's Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Fa (Inverted Cauliflower and Hematite Method), administered with Si Mo Yin (Four-Mortar Drink). Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower) has turning capabilities; Dai Zhe Shi (Hematite) is a sedating substance, salty-cold descends, sour enters Liver; Si Mo Yin gradually promotes transformation, allowing Hand Tai Yin (Lung) to execute clearing and descending commands, preventing Foot Jue Yin (Liver) from violent insulting. Now, the wiry images at both Guan positions have decreased, facial edema has slightly receded, indicating the medicine is effective. However, sudden thirst and desire to drink remain unchanged. This means the Yang Ming Fu organs have retained filth, boiling fluids; if lower flow does not pass for a day, upper flow floods for a day. Although there are strategies for tonifying deficiency, who dares to indiscriminately prescribe? Moreover, the deficiency pulse and image are obvious, and the situation allows no delay. Previously borrowed Zhongjing's method to reduce the wiry pulse at both Guan positions; here, can we not borrow Zhongjing's method to urgently remove retained filth to preserve fluids? However, do not use Hezi's (Zhang Zhongjing's follower) hegemonic methods. Propose a gentle method to push out the old and bring forth the new, awaiting the approval of the two Daoist masters from yesterday:
Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower), Dai Zhe Shi (Hematite), Ren Shen (Ginseng), decocted to deliver Chen Xiang Hua Qi Wan (Agarwood Transforming Qi Pills), 2.5 qian.
Zi Ying Yang Ye Gao (Nourishing Yin and Nourishing Fluid Paste):
Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustrum Lucidum Fruit), Guang Pi (Broad Peel/Tangerine Peel), Gan Sang Ye (Dried Mulberry Leaf), Shu Di (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Han Lian Cao (Eclipta Prostrata Herb), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Hei Zhi Ma (Black Sesame), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Xian Ju Hua (Fresh Chrysanthemum), Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Center), Hei Lv Dou (Black Soybean), Yu Zhu (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome), Nan Zhu Ye (Nanchu Leaf), Bai Fu Shen (White Poria with Hostwood), Sha Ji Li (Tribulus Fructus), Zhi Cao (Honey-fried Licorice).
The former fourteen ingredients, four liang each; the latter two, two liang each. Decoct with Heavenly Spring Water and Mulberry Branch fire into a paste. Add three liang of real E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and three liang of refined white honey. Store in a porcelain jar. Each day at Mao hour (5-7 AM), scoop five or six qian, taken with boiled water.
This formula is a great medicine for those living in seclusion and a wonderful product for harmonizing Liver Qi. Zhen and Lian (Nv Zhen Zi and Han Lian Cao) follow the Er Zhi method to secretly turn Yin and Yang; assisted by Sang and Ma (Mulberry and Sesame) to adjust wind and Qi according to seasons, planting vitality; aided by Qi and Ju (Goji and Chrysanthemum) for ascending and descending like Spring and Autumn, also conveying flow and promoting transformation; Gui and Shao (Angelica and Peony) are pungent-sour, one unblocking and one draining, ensuring no stagnation; Di Huang and Ji Li (Rehmannia and Tribulus) one filling and one nourishing, preventing muscular deficiency; Lv Dou nourishes Water and calms Liver; Nan Zhu cultivates Yuan Qi and boosts Energy; Fu Shen and Yu Zhu act as messengers for Ying and Wei; Ju Hong and Gan Cao are the true officials of the throat and tongue; E Jiao creates water, bringing clarity from turbidity with chilling intensity; Honey is brewed from flowers, possessing the benevolence of gentle wind and sweet rain. Taking it not only regulates Yuan Qi and delays aging but also reveals that Heaven and Earth's generative power is thus.
Xin Pi Shuang Bu Wan (Heart-Spleen Dual Tonification Pill):
Ren Shen (Ginseng), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), Yuan Zhi Rou (Polygala Root Flesh), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed), Yu Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome - *Note: Text says Yu Zhu but context implies Bai Zhu or similar spleen tonic, keeping literal translation*), Chuan Bei (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice), Ku Jie Geng (Bitter Platycodon Root), Dan Shen (Salvia Root), Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Chuan Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Jin Hua Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rotundus), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar).
Grind to powder, use Long Yan Rou (Longan Flesh) decocted into paste to replace honey, knead into pills the size of bullet seeds. Chew one pill every morning, taken with boiled water.
The Classic states: "Women take Heart and Spleen as the root of life." Whenever Heart and Spleen Qi are depressed, depression transforms into fire. If unresolved for long, it gradually consumes the Five Yins. This formula is specially crafted, having both unblocking and tonifying properties, worthy of competing with Dandun and Lizhai masters. The formula's intent takes Ren Shen to nourish Heart Qi, Mai Dong to benefit Heart Fluids, Sheng Di and Dan Shen to tonify Heart Yin, Fu Shen and Yuan Zhi to calm Heart Spirit, Wu Wei Zi and Zao Ren to collect Heart Fluids, Chuan Lian and Gan Cao to drain Heart Yang, Jie Geng to benefit Heart Qi, Zhu Sha to settle Heart Timidity, Bai Zhu to strengthen Spleen Yang, Xiang Fu to smooth Spleen Yin, Chuan Bei to treat Spleen Depression. Special emphasis is placed on their numbers to address the Heart and Spleen Zang organs. Longan replaces honey to greatly tonify Heart Blood, and Gan Cao harmonizes the Spleen. Pills are bullet-sized, chewed finely and swallowed, avoiding direct descent to the Lower Jiao, doubling the efficacy. Named Xin Pi Shuang Bu Fa (Heart-Spleen Dual Tonification Method).
Treating Postpartum Abdominal Mass (Jia Zha):
Ren Shen (Ginseng), Yun Mu Fen (Mica Powder), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Jin Ling Zi (Chinese Medlar Fruit), Sheng Di (Raw Rehmannia Root), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), Chao Xue Shao (Stir-fried Blood-Peony), Chao Bai Chuan Xiong (Stir-fried White Ligusticum Rhizome), Gan Qi (Dried Lacquer), Zhi Xiang Fu (Processed Cyperus Rotundus), Ou Fen (Lotus Root Starch, raw), Lao Bai Jiu Gen (Old White Leek Root).
Grind to powder, form bean-sized pills using real Shen Qu paste. Take one hundred pills daily, with empty stomach and boiled water.
