Pulse: Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) is caused by lung dryness, and the pulse is often floating and weak; if the cunkou pulse (pulse at the radial artery wrist position) is deep, using diaphoresis (sweating method) would be incorrect; pain or weakness in the feet requires careful examination of the chi pulse (distal pulse position); a slippery pulse indicates phlegm with slowness, or a deep and weak pulse.
Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) is characterized by excess above and deficiency below, where the patient can eat but cannot walk. Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) primarily belongs to internal injury diseases, resulting from qi and blood deficiency. Treatment uses Shen Gui Yang Rong Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Nourishing Blood Decoction) with modifications, or Hu Qian Wan (Tiger Knee Pill) to resolve phlegm and descend fire. It must not be mistakenly treated as wind syndrome, because wind syndrome is an external contraction, whereas Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) is an internal injury. If a person's feet are constantly hot, they will inevitably develop Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome) later; some may remain unable to rise for many years.
Shen Gui Yang Rong Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Nourishing Blood Decoction) treats Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome).
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, removed rhizome base), Fu Ling (Poria, removed skin), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-fried), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, wine-fried), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, removed rhizome base, wine-washed), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, ginger- and wine-fried), Po Gu Zhi (Bursae Semen, wine-fried), all in equal parts; Gan Cao (Licorice Root) in half amount.
The above herbs are chopped, decocted in water, and taken orally. For obese individuals belonging to qi deficiency with phlegm, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and remove Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba); for thin individuals belonging to blood deficiency with fire, double the dosage of Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata).
This formula is suitable for symptoms belonging to deficient heat.
Hu Qian Wan (Tiger Knee Pill)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, removed rhizome base), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, removed rhizome base), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, removed skin), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, ginger- and wine-fried), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, wine-washed), Po Gu Zhi (Bursae Semen, wine-washed), Hu Jing Gu (Osti Tigris, wine-fried), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, butter-fried), Gui Ban (Testudinis et Chelydrae Carapax et Plastrum, butter-fried), all in equal parts.
The above herbs are ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, delivered with good wine; clear rice soup is also acceptable. If nocturnal emission occurs, add Suo Yang (Cynomorii Herba, wine-washed).
This formula is suitable for symptoms belonging to deficient cold.
Lu Jiao Shuang Wan (Deer Antler Frost Pill) treats weakness in all four seasons, flaccidity and weakness in both legs, inability to move, and conditions of long-term bedridden state. (Formula see Stroke chapter.)
Steaming Method treats kidney qi deficiency, where wind-cold-dampness invades the spleen, kidney, and sanjiao (Triple Burner) meridians, stagnating in the legs and knees, causing meridian condensation and obstruction, transforming into jiao bi (foot numbness/obstruction), thus causing pain. This method can harmonize ying and wei (nutritive and defensive qi) and unblock meridians.
Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, one handful), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, three large stalks, cut), Yan (Sal, one handful), Xiao Mai Fu (Tritici Vulgaris Bran, about 4-5 sheng), Jiu (Alcohol, one qian).
The above ingredients are mixed with vinegar to achieve appropriate moisture, stir-fried in a silver vessel until extremely hot, and spread on the bedding. Position the affected legs near the bedding for steaming, covering with light clothing and blankets. When sweat is evenly distributed, after approximately half a xunshi (one hour), remove the fried bran, lie only on the steaming bedding, and rest for two xunshi. After feeling that sweat has slightly subsided, avoid exposure to wind; immediate efficacy is expected.
Supplementary Formulas
Qing Zao Tang (Clear Dryness Decoction) In the sixth and seventh months, dampness prevails extensively. The child (damp-earth) strengthens the mother (fire), leading to vigorous heat. Damp-heat combines and injures the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian, so cold-cooling herbs are used to rescue it. The zjin-metal (lung) is harmed by damp-heat pathogens, severing the source of generation for han-water (kidney). When the source is severed, kidney deficiency occurs, and wei jue (flaccidity and cold extremities) disease erupts severely, with flaccidity and weakness below the waist, paralysis, and immobility.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried, 1.5 qian), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, rice-water fried, 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, removed rhizome base), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 0.5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, removed rhizome base), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, removed skin), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, each 0.3 qian), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, removed heart), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, each 0.2 qian), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Zhu Ling (Polyporus, each 0.2 qian), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-fried), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, each 0.1 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, nine berries), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted, 0.2 qian).
The above herbs are chopped as one dose, decocted in water, and taken on an empty stomach.
