Abdominal distension is caused by deficiency of Spleen and Stomach Qi.
Xiaozhang San (Distension-Reducing Powder) treats pediatric abdominal distension.
Ingredients: Radish Seed (fried), Perilla Stem, Pueraria Root, Tangerine Peel, Aurantium Fruit (all in equal proportions), Licorice Root (a small amount).
Usage: Decoct the above ingredients in water and take orally. If the patient has poor appetite, add Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome.
A child suffered from abdominal distension due to food stagnation, accompanied by chest fullness and phlegm. I used Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Astragalus) and achieved a cure. Later, the child suffered from food stagnation again, resulting in abdominal distension and pain. Someone used purgative drugs; although the pain ceased, the distension worsened, and rapid breathing was added. This indicates that Spleen Qi injury extended to the Lung. I used Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Platycodon Root for regulation and tonification, achieving a cure.
Another child had food stagnation and took purgative/laxative agents, resulting in vomiting and abdominal distension. This indicates further injury to the Spleen and Stomach.
Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Boosting the Middle and Augmenting Qi) cured it. (The above formulas are all listed under "Tonifying".)
Vomiting is caused by milk or food injuring the Stomach.
Dingtou Yin (Anti-Vomiting Infusion) treats vomiting and regurgitation. When other medicines fail, this formula is miraculously effective.
Ingredients: Pinellia Tuber (soaked in hot water until soft, sliced, dried, and powdered, 2 liang), Ginger (washed, with skin, 1 liang), Cinnamon Twig (coarse bark removed, chopped, 3 qian).
Usage: Cut the ginger into small pieces the size of mung beans, mix evenly with the Pinellia powder, and place in a small pan. Stir-fry slowly over low heat in one direction until fragrant, cooked, and slightly dry. Then add Cinnamon Twig and stir-fry evenly until faintly fragrant. Spread on paper on the ground to dissipate fire toxicity. After cooling, gently sift off black charred residues. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct with 1 cup of water and 3 slices of ginger until reduced to 70%. Take slowly in small amounts on an empty stomach.
Dingtou Zijin He (Anti-Vomping Purple Gold Pill) treats vomiting.
Ingredients: Clove, Costus Root, Agastache Herb, Pinellia Tuber (soaked seven times in ginger juice), Ginseng Root (rhizome removed), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (rhizome removed, all 1 qian each).
Usage: Powder the above ingredients. Make pills using ginger juice as a binder, sized like a jujube pit. Coat with 1 qian each of Agarwood and Cinnabar. Dry in the shade. Take one pill per dose. Remove the core from one jujube, insert the pill, sandwich between ginger slices, wrap in wet paper, and bake in ash/fire until cooked. Remove paper and ginger, chew and swallow, pressing down with rice drink.
A child suffered from food stagnation, presenting with fever, red face, convulsions, vomiting, asthma, and expectoration. This was caused by dietary injury to the Spleen and deficiency of Lung Qi. I used Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with 2 fen each of Charred Coptis Rhizome and Gardenia Fruit. One dose resulted in a cure. (Formula see "Tonifying".)
