Treat the years of Yin-Shen, where Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire of Sanjiao and Pericardium) governs the Heaven Qi, and Jueyin Fengmu (Wind-Wood of Liver and Gallbladder) governs the Earth Qi. Patients present with symptoms of Qi stagnation transforming into heat, blood extravasation, red eyes, coughing with counterflow Qi, headache, hypochondriac fullness, vomiting, chest and diaphragm discomfort, deafness and blurred vision, thirst, heavy body with heart pain, failure of Yang Qi to store, carbuncles and sores, and irritability.
Zitan Xiang (Pterocarpus Santalinus Lignum), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, stir-fried), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed in decoction), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Qiangmi (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma et Radix - *Note: Text says Qiangmi, likely referring to a specific herb or typo for Qiongzhi/Qianghuo contextually, but kept as literal*), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each half liang).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take four qian per dose, with one and a half cups of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain, strain, and take before meals. From Dahan (Great Cold) to Chunfen (Spring Equinox), add Baiwei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix) and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), each half liang; from Chunfen to Xiaoman (Grain Buds), add Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), one qian; from Xiaoman to Dashu (Great Heat), add Loulu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and ChiShaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), each half liang; from Dashu to Qiufen (Autumn Equinox), add Fuling (Poria), half liang; from Qiufen to Xiaoxue (Minor Snow), follow the standard formula; from Xiaoxue to Dahan, add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), half liang.
In the years of Chou-Wei, Taiyin Shitu (Damp-Earth of Spleen) governs the Heaven Qi, and Taiyang Han shui (Cold-Water of Kidney and Bladder) governs the Earth Qi, causing the Qi transformation to lag behind the natural timing. In the first Qi period, Jueyin Fengmu adds to Wind-Wood; the people suffer from blood extravasation, tendon network stiffness and spasms, joint immobility, heavy body, and tendon atrophy. In the second Qi period, Da Huo (Heart Fire) is dominant; Shaoyin Junhuo (Monarch Fire of Heart) adds to Monarch Fire; warm plagues prevail among the people, affecting both near and far. In the third Qi period, Taiyin Earth adds to Shaoyang Fire; the people suffer from heavy body and edema, chest and abdominal fullness. In the fourth Qi period, Shaoyang Xianghuo adds to Taiyin Earth; the people suffer from heat in the couli (skin pores), sudden massive blood extravasation, malaria, heart and abdominal distension, and severe cases develop edema. In the fifth Qi period, Yangming Zaojin (Dry-Metal of Lung and Large Intestine) adds to Dry-Metal; the people suffer from cold qi invading the skin and whole body. In the final Qi period, Taiyang Han shui adds to Cold-Water; the people suffer from stiff and fixed joints and lower back pain. The treatment method is to use sour substances to level the upper pathogenic factors, sweet-warm substances to treat the lower deficiency-cold, bitter substances to dry dampness, warm methods to dispel cold, and if severe, use dispersing or purging methods. Assist the Yang fire to enable it to resist the cold.
For the years of Chou-Wei, where Taiyin Shitu governs Heaven Qi and Taiyang Han shui governs Earth Qi, patients present with joint immobility, tendon and vessel spasms, heavy and atrophic body, or prevailing warm plagues affecting all areas, or chest and abdominal fullness and oppression, severe cases developing edema, cold malaria with blood extravasation, and lower back pain.
Mugua GAN (Chaenomelis Fructum, dried), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pinelliae, wood removed, each one liang), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, roasted, skin and navel removed, each three fen), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Fupenzi (Rubigeniculi Fructus, each half liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one fen), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, three fen).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take four large qian per dose, with one and a half cups of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain, strain, and take before meals. From Dahan to Chunfen, follow the standard formula; from Chunfen to Xiaoman, remove Fuzi, add Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), each half liang; from Xiaoman to Dashu, add Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), three fen; from Dashu until Dahan, follow the standard formula.
In the years of Zi-Wu, Shaoyin Junhuo (Monarch Fire of Heart) governs the Heaven Qi, and Yangming Zaojin (Dry-Metal of Lung and Large Intestine) governs the Earth Qi, causing the Qi transformation to lead the natural timing. In the first Qi period, Taiyang Han shui adds to Jueyin Wood; the people suffer from stiff and fixed joints, lower back pain, and internal/external carbuncles and sores. In the second Qi period, Jueyin Fengmu adds to Shaoyin Junhuo; the people suffer from strangury, red eyes, Qi stagnation with heat. In the third Qi period, Shaoyin Junhuo adds to Shaoyang Fire; the people suffer from heat-jue heart pain, alternating chills and fever, coughing and wheezing, red eyes. In the fourth Qi period, Taiyin Earth adds to Damp-Earth; the people suffer from jaundice, nasal congestion and epistaxis, dry throat, and vomiting of fluids. In the fifth Qi period, Shaoyang Fire adds to Yangming Metal; the people recover health. In the final Qi period, Yangming Metal adds to Taiyang Water; the people suffer from upper swelling, coughing and wheezing, severe cases with blood extravasation, disease extending downward to the lower abdomen, resulting in interior cold. The treatment method should use salty substances to level the upper, bitter-hot substances to treat the interior, salty substances to soften hardness, bitter substances to disperse, and sour substances to astringe.
